The History of Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola has been a staple in the United States since Dr. John Pemberton cooked up the first batch in his backyard in 1886. Dr. Pemberton wasn't an M.D. but rather a Pharmacist seeking to produce a tonic for his customers.

The History of Coca-Cola is rich in entrepreneurial spirit, marketing savvy, and brand recognition. The Coca-Cola brand is recognized around the world for it's red and white script logo, it's famous slogans and most of all it's cool, refreshing taste.

The History of Coca-Cola After 1886

May 8th, 1886 is a day that marks the beginning of the world-wide empire known as the Coca-Cola Company. This was the first day that Coca-Cola was served in Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta, GA.

As mentioned above, Dr. John Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in his backyard in Atlanta, GA in 1886. You may be wondering about the history of the famous Coca-Cola red and white script logo. Frank Robinson, Pemberton's bookkeeper, had excellent penmanship and created the logo.

In 1887, Asa Candler become the proprietor of the secret formula for Coca-Cola when he purchased it from Pemberton for a mere $2,300. Candler had an aggressive marketing strategy and rocketed the sales of Coca-Cola nearly 4000% between 1890 and 1900. Asa Candler was responsible for driving Coca-Cola to popularity in the entire country, and inevitably, the world. If you have never tasted an ice cold Coca-Cola, in a glass bottle no less, on a hot Mexican afternoon, you are missing one of the greatest pleasures known to man!

Up until the 1920's, Coca-Cola was enjoyed primarily in Soda Fountains. Soda Fountains were normally a part of the larger pharmacy/drug store. In many towns, this was the center of activity, often serving as the post office as well. The Soda Fountain remained popular until the 1960's and even today you can hear stories of folks having social gatherings at Soda Fountains. In the 1920's, however, the invention of the six pack lent brought about the capability to consume a nice Coca-Cola in the comfort of your own home. I imagine that fresh from the ice box was the only way to drink them!

From the invention of Coca-Cola by Dr. Pemberton, to the takeover by Asa Candler, to the now world-wide phenomenon known as the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, the History of Coca-Cola is one that is not rivaled by many companies. The great companies, the ones that impact peoples lives by becoming apart of them, are the ones that are held near and dear to people around the world. Coca-Cola will long be making history with it's red and white logo and advertising that makes everyone smile.
