Simple golf tips for beginners
For beginners, golf can be extremely frustrating. I would like to share a few golf tips for beginners that I have learned over the years. For you to learn to hit better golf shots, there are a few things you should know so that you can enjoy your time out on the course and improve your golf game. First off, no matter what handicap of a golfer you are, you can learn to hit better golf shots and lower your score in the process. Make sure to get rid of the idea that you want to hit the ball like the pros. Chances are, you will never be able to hit the golf ball like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, and others. Professional golfers have natural ability that most of us beginners do not have. Do not forget, they do this for a living. They spend hours upon hours just working on their game. Although you will probably never be as consistent and hit golf shots like the pros, there are certain things that you can do to improve your game and start hitting better shots. Here is a few golf tips for beginners.
Tips to hit better shots
Here are a few tips that I have learned over the years that have made me a better golfer.1. Make sure you have the right equipment for you - I'll give you an example. I am 6'3 and for years I played with a standard set of clubs. My clubs were about an inch to short and it made it difficult for me to hit consistent shots. A buddy of mine pointed this out to me while on the course one day. So for me to start hitting better shots, I needed a set of clubs that were a little longer than a standard club. This is just my example but there are many other things you should consider. Do you need a club with more forgiveness? Do you need steel or graphite shafts? What type of flex should you use? I recommend getting fitted and getting your swing analyzed. You can typically have this done for little or no cost.
2. Align yourself correctly at your target - You may be surprised how this simple tip is most often the most overlooked. We spend so much time doing drills to improve this or that but we forget that for the ball to go where we want it to go, we have to hit it at that target. I guarantee to you if you want to start hitting better golf shots, you should always check your alignment. A simple way to do this is to pick your target and then find a spot a few inches in front of your ball that is lined up with the target. Address the ball and center your club up on that spot before you even worry about getting your feet set. You can also lay a club on the ground facing your target and line your feet up along the outside of the club. Try this!! For you to hit better golf shots may be as simple as you making sure you are aligned correctly.
3. Hit down on the ball - A mistake that I made and that most beginners make is we think we have to scoop the golf ball to get it up in the air. The causes you to top shots or hit many shots really fat. I like to think of golf as a game of opposites. If you want to elevate the golf ball, you want to make a descending blow at impact. Take a look at your club. Depending on what club you are using, you will have a certain degree of loft on the club. This loft is what is going to cause you to hit the ball in the air. So stop trying to scoop the ball. Check out this video from www.youtube.com that gives you a great drill to practice. Doing this will cause you to hit the ball more solid and hit better golf shots.
4. Stays inside the ball - If you are struggling to hit the ball straight, chances are you are hitting a slice. For a right-handed golfer, a slice is when you hit your ball and it takes a sharp turn to your right. Remember when I said that golf is a game of opposites. Well it applies to fixing your slice. You want to learn to draw the ball and to do this you must stay inside the ball and make an inside out type swing. You want to swing out to the right and try to start your ball to the right. The spin that you will put on the ball will cause it to draw back to your left. This will not only improve your accuracy, but it will increase the distance on your shots. Take a look at this video to cure your slice.
5. Don't try to crush the ball - Quit trying to hit the ball 300 yards on every swing. The majority of golfers are unable to hit the ball that far anyway so know what your capabilities are and learn to hit and smooth, controlled swing. You will be surprised how this one little tip can cause you to hit better golf shots.
6. Have fun - Golf is probably the most frustrating game that you will ever play. I played three sports growing up and was pretty good at all of them. I figured that golf would be the same and that I would pick it up quickly. We all know that for the majority of amateurs, that is not the case. You have to learn many things but you also have to practice them. I think one of the best ways to hit better shots is to just have fun. Enjoy your time on the course. It beats any day in the office. If you are frustrated the entire time you are playing, chances are it is going to affect your shots. So start enjoying yourself more and have a great time!
