The Pros And Cons On Hitchhiking
Ranked #356 in Travel & Places, #16,214 overall
The Big Traveling Around Debate..
When you are going down the road in your traveling van, bus, truck, a camper or your love bug with plenty of room to spare and you spot a hitchhiker what do you do? what is the right thing to do? most of us especially hippies still want to pick up hitchhikers because many of us did hitch rides and nothing happened to us so we want to do the same for others but is it really a good idea ? It's a debate.
Last Seen Hitchhiking

There are pros and cons please do not pick hitchhikers or don't hitchhike until you know both sides especially the cons ! it could save your life..Most of these are females teenagers running away from home hitchhiking thinking it's safe to get a ride from a stranger but many males also do not always get to their destination.
These are only a few pros and cons that I picked but there are so many many more sad stories not only here in America but it's happening world wide..Some of these are old stories from the 70s to prove it was happening back then too
Pros...
- Hitchhiker's safety - Hitchwiki
- Hitchhiker's safety From Hitchwiki Hitchhiking is usually very safe.

And cons...

- The Victim Didn't Smoke, by Mark Scaramella [murder of Gerard Vincent Jerry Sullivan, 1975, DNA]
An unidentified elderly man who was taking a shortcut home through the woods came across the body of a 20-year-old hitchhiker He was on a full leg cast hitchhiking going home why didn't he know about the dangers of hitchhiking ?? the same reason I used to love to hitchhike it was the only way to get around if you had no money
Bringing awareness to our children the fact is hitchhiking is dangerous don't follow a good feeling go by the facts how many hitchhikers get murdered that's the one thing that we can learn from Jerry and all on this list that it's too dangerous they had no clue there were those kinds of people out there in this beautiful world what a shock it was for them all .

Murder trial hears evidence from forensic anthropologist into murders of hitchhikers Melody Lopez 21 has been hitchhiking her mother said for years and she meets a boy name Shawn Barrett 21 by chance. she is pregnant and they decided to go back to Melody's mother home and start a new life but on their way home they get in their last ride, this young couple said yes to a invitation to a strangers cabin ,too bad they couldn't read the strangers mind but why did they trusted this stranger ?after years of hitchhiking the odds caught up with her it's sad but true. We need to let our children know that it is not ok to hitchhike.
I used to think people were trustworthy I was never afraid to thumb ! by this age we stop listening to parents ! they were out there trusting strangers just as I once thought it was safe this story bothered me so much .Rest in peace Melody & Shawn
I hope that parents that lose their children from hitchhiking that they would start awareness to all the people they know about the dangers of hitchhiking they might help someone else from going in cars with strangers it looks like this case was a joy killing nothing else for Armstrong 24 when he saw them he knew he would take them to his cabin ..this story was extra bothersome
On my guestbook I got this comment..
Trust no one. Don't let your guard down for one second if you feel that you must hitchhike. Even if you are not alone you are at the mercy of the person picking you up. The problem is that you can't spot a predator. My nephew was Shawn Barrett. -

- Pippa Bacca
Giuseppina Pasqualino, also known as Pippa Bacca, was found dead in Turkey on Saturday, after having been raped and murdered. Paqualino was hitchhiking with friend, both performance artists, hatched the idea about a year ago: wearing white wedding dresses, they would hitchhike from Italy to the Balkans to the Middle East to send a message of peace and "marriage between different peoples and nations."She thought that in the world there were more positive than negative people, and that it was right to be trusting,"
Why did she think people should be trusted ? with that dress she couldn't run from anybody ! and the other thing that was wrong was these two young ladies Silvia Moro, 37 the other artist and friend who set out with Ms. Bacca on the trip, billed as "Brides on Tour," on March 8. She said she last saw her friend on March 19 in Istanbul, where the two split up and agreed to rejoin each other in Beirut. the body of Pippa was found march 31 so that means these two friends split for a long time both just hicking making peace they should have not split up these two women were too trusting they didn't know that there was killers out there.. why didn't they know about the dangers ?? Pippa went out to prove something and the end result is that she was wrong .. human nature should not be trusted not like that !
Rest in peace Pippa
Marie Lilienburg, and Maria Wahien

Is hitchhiking safe ?

Pros
Pitaya says:
I've never hitch-hiked but regularly pick them up (I have a strong intuition and trust it to decide who to pick up or not). I see it as my duty as a citizen to help others out as many people can't afford to drive where I live.
chael777 says:
I hitchhike. I write about it too here: http://www.velabas.com. I think it's as safe as you make it. Most of the horror stories are really, really unlucky cases. And people really just care for the horror stories. However, the good stories outumber the bad 1000 to 1. Read something I wrote on the website to see what I mean.
Jev_Maks says:
I HH in Europe in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009. Never experienced any trouble.
hlkljgk says:
i would say it depends. and i'm not convinced it's gotten any more dangerous to hitchhike. plus there are some alternatives such as ridesharing http://www.erideshare.com .
bententom says:
Be cautious, be wary. Don't get in just anyone's car and always have an exit strategy. :) Most people are very friendly, its the weirdos you gotta look out for.
Cons
evitaa says:
No! I would not even try it for a minute.
SereneSea says:
It isn't safe anymore, I am too scared of asking for a lift and would not suggest anybody to hitchhike. You never know about the person who is behind the wheels if he/she can be trusted.
RitaK says:
Not anymore, just too many weird people out there!
darciefrench says:
Getting into a locked, enclosed, fast-moving small space with a stranger is kinda dumb, if you ask me - and, you asked me -:) But if I had too for a higher purpose than 'wanting to go somewhere free', of course I would hitchhike.
says:
Once, It probably was fairly safe. Now, a person takes a chance to do it.

Human nature

I used to hitch rides allot I never got scared it never interred my mind and they were getting killed back then too but I had no clue.. I had no clue until I started to do a little digging for a fun lens and what I found shocked me and found that now days it's more dangerous then ever !
Please teach your children how dangerous it is to hitchhike so that they know it when they are teenagers!! We protect our kids by telling them the truth about the dangers that are really out there not to scare them but so that they are not so trusting with strangers!
Go to your local used book store under true crime you will find these books and many others these books tells us there is a dark side to human nature that we don't want our kids to know about which makes them believe the boogie man doesn't exist

- I went to college in Ohio during the early 1970's. Hitchhiking around the state to see friends at other colleges was the norm then. Never thought twice about the possible consequences. Thanks for a great informational lens.
