Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Story Line

One Thursday just before lunchtime the Earth is unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. Luckily, the Dolphins knew it was coming so they all evacuated Earth just in time. For Arthur Dent, who just had his house demolished that morning, this was more than he could handle before lunch. Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, unknownst to Author, an alien researcher for the revised edition of the The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out of work actor. Together this dynamic pair begin their journey through space aided by the book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The Hitchhikers Guide - The Original BBC Series on DVD

Don't Panic

With the galaxy's best-selling tour guide and a good towel, earthling Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect (actually from planet Betelgeuse) are transported, among other places, to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and back to the beginning of time in search for the answers to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

These episodes are as close to the book as is possible, unlike the movie made in 2005. Being a latecomer to the Hitchhiker world, I wasn't sure what to expect from these 1981 renditions, but I was totally blown away by the "pureness" of the script and the graphics that they were able to make for the time. It's very well acted too, and the guy who played Arthur in the radio series also plays him on screen in these episodes. Douglas Adams also makes an on-screen appearance in a particular sequence, but I won't spoil the surprise.

They also include some documentaries done about 10 years later, which include interviews with the actors and Douglas Adams and a look at how they made the graphics.

The episodes cover most of the first novel, spend some time at the restaurant at the end of the universe and end at prehistoric earth.

Like most movies, The 2005 movie for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy does differ from the orignal books and plays. Read the Books first, then watch the movie for some more fun with Author Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillion, and of course Marvin

Don't panic! After twenty years stuck in development (a mere blink compared to how long it takes to find the answer to life, the universe, and everything), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has finally been turned into a movie. Following the radio play, TV series, commemorative towel, and books, this latest installment in the sci-fi-comedy franchise is based on the screenplay and detailed notes by Douglas Adams.
