Adolph Hitler was a Christian

This lens provides evidence to support the claim that Hitler was a Christian and not an atheist.

Background

On September 16, 2010, Catholic League president Bill Donohue said that atheists should apologize for Hitler (see http://catholicleague.org/release.php?id=1978). He said that Hitler was "driven by a radical atheism." It appears that Mr. Donohue is either completely ignorant of history or is willing to lie and distort in order to maintain his defense of the indefensible, a Catholic Church that has systematically enabled widespread child rape by priests. Regardless, it is important to set the record straight about Hitler and demonstrate that he was no atheist. Like Donohue, Hitler was a Christian.

Looks like people are missing the point entirely. You aren't saying Hitler was a good Christian, merely providing evidence that he was a Christian despite the accusation against atheists that Hitler was an atheist. I find it convenient how many Christians label other Christians as atheists when those people do something bad. Being bad is not something that defines atheism. Not believing in God or Gods is. With a motto like "God is with us" it tends to suggest that Nazis weren't atheists.

Many people claim to be a Christian and are not. I would say Jesus Christ would not allow Hitler to be by His side in Heaven.

I agree that it matters not a whole lot whether we can identify Hitler as a Christian or an atheist, but when the current Pope equates modern day secularism with the tyranny of Nazi Germany (see this: http://blog.thehumanist.com/ and search for Catholics, Secularism, and Nazis) this really is just a smoke screen to cover up the Catholic church's current bad press. There exists some crazy notion that secularism is incapable of any kind of objective morality, but to have this thrown in our faces by a man who is in denial about his pedophile clergy is unacceptable, period.

According to the history channel he had a sister who was mentally disabled and he tried to hide it. I don't doubt he was too. So he wasn't likely an example of any particular religion. Besides as Billy Graham once said "Being born into a christian home doesn't make you a christian anymore than being born in a garage makes you a car!

Jesus said, "by this will all know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another." The real Christians are followers of Jesus in deed, not just in word.

Do any of us really see Hitler as the typical atheist or Christian? The history books notice Hitler because he wasn't typical -- he was unique. If we're lazy enough to want to stereotype all Christians or all atheists, Hitler doesn't exemplify either group.

"What matters is not whether Hitler and Stalin were atheists, but whether atheism systematically influences people to do bad things. There is not the smallest evidence that it does." --Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion, p. 273.
