Hoarders - The Shocking TV Show

Is America's new obsession about watching the obsessed?

The "Hoarders" TV show has shocked many viewers. Some feel compassion and sadness towards the hoarders. Others feel disgust. Whatever your reaction may be, the show has certainly brought the hidden problem into the public's eye.

Other shows now feature those with the hoarder compulsion, and we know the topic is a heated one amongst viewers. Hoarding can encompass many things: animals, garbage, food, yard sale items, and even trash bin recoveries. What seems like garbage to the average person and would cause no distress or anxiety as to the question of disposal, puts the hoarder in a state of extreme anxiety.

Read on to learn more about this complex issue of hoarding.

Hoarders: The Complete Season One

With additonal footage

hoarders_season_one_dvdEach week, two people are featured in Hoarders: The Complete Season One. The hoarders are offered the help of a clean-up crew, but the hoarders must participate in the cleaning process. The crew cannot just clean the house. They know that if someone else eliminates the clutter and garbage from the house, the hoarder will replace it in no time at all.

Some of the people face eviction, loss of their children, divorce, and condemned homes, but they still struggle with the decision of throwing away moldy food or a soda can.

What is a Hoarder?

Hoarding Defined

hoarders_living_roomThe average person has no problem when it is time to throw away items before the clutter becomes hoarding. But, to a person afflicted with the obsessive compulsive disorder of hoarding, each item causes extreme anxiety and distress. That anxiety is shown in different ways, as you can see on the "Hoarders" show. Sometimes we see the hoarders seemingly nonchalant about their environment. Meanwhile, the garbage trucks are sitting in the driveway waiting to carry away tons of waste. Others become angry, defiant, and defensive.

Each episode of "Hoarders" begins with the message, "Compulsive Hoarding is a mental disorder marked by an obsessive need to acquire and keep things, even if the items are worthless, hazardous, or unsanitary."

There is no clear and universally accepted definition of hoarding in the DSM, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. But it is understood that hoarding encompasses certain characteristics:
  • Acquiring possessions that appear to be useless, yet the person cannot discard any of the items without severe anxiety.

  • Living spaces are so cluttered that normal things such as cooking in the kitchen, bathing in the bathroom, or even sleeping in a bed cannot be done.

Hoarding creates dangerous situations. A house cannot be cleaned if there is clutter that reaches the ceilings, so problems with rodents and insects become apparent.

Fire hazard is a big issue.

If someone requires medical attention, often the emergency personnel cannot get to the ill person.

Hoarder Shows on TV

More on hoarders

Below are some additional hoarder-type shows on TV along with the original "Hoarders".

The first show is "Hoarding: Buried Alive". This one is very similar to "Hoarders", but in this show the hoarders must clean up their own mess. Therapists and organizers work through the anxiety and decision-making process with the hoarders as they initially go through each little piece of paper or each treasure that has been saved. Usually there is a follow-up visit after about six weeks to show the progress that the hoarder has made.

"Confessions: Animal Hoarding" is about people who think they are helping pets by "saving" so many.

"Clean House" is a much lighter look at the topic of hoarding. Humor and bantering make this show somewhat fun to watch.
Hoarders
Watch full episodes online and learn more about the obsession of hoarding. Meet people who are in danger of losing their children or homes and they still have difficulty with decisions that have to be made in order to clean up the house.
Hoarding: Buried Alive
In a heartbreaking clip, Tommy explains why he has not touched his musical studio in 20 years due to a brain injury. Instead, it has become a room filled with clutter.
Another couple discuss their health problems resulting from the dust and clutter. The episode is labeled, "Maggots in the Coffee Pot."
Confessions: Animal Hoarding
Learn more about another obsession, animal hoarding. Meet Shelley as she explains, "I have 65 cats. I have twenty that are kitten kittens, 13 that are teenagers..."
Clean House
Clean House is a "lighter" look at hoarders. The show sometimes looks for the "Messiest Home in America" and those are definitely hoarders! The crew arrives at the "messy" home and rids it of clutter. That clutter is then sold at a yard sale and proceeds are used to update the house. It is quite interesting to hear what some people refuse to give up in order to have an orderly home.

More than 3 million people are compulsive hoarders.

There has to be something wrong with these people, they just do not know it.

I feel sorry for these people. It certainly is an illness. I've seen the TLC version, it's so sad some of them have lost family members and other bad situations from hoarding. It's nice to see those who get help and overcome this.

I had never in my 38 years in New Zealand seen as much waste as I have seen in California. On any given Sunday, while driving around the neighborhood, garages are open and there are NO cars inside, just stuff!!! People are desperate for furniture, clothing, a bed to sleep on, and stuff is being tossed that is perfectly useful. I don't understand this wasteful society we live in. Hoarding is a sickness, usually brought on by trauma. I live with it - not in any way close to "Hoarders" examples, but it is a major problem that affects a persons way of life. Hard to have quality of life when you are drowning in 'stuff'. Great lens - SquidAngel Blessed!

I have to say that all the times I've watched the animal shows where a hoarder is being helped, it is definitely a mental condition that ends up with them like this. It is sad, but definitely treatable, the same way all mental conditions, can be treated, if not cured. But, first people must recognize it as something that needs help, not just something digusting. Nicely done lens, on a good topic.

I'm glad that this show and your lens have shined some light on this mental health issue that plagues many Americans. Maybe people will start having a little more compassion for these people and their families. I feel so sad for the children of hoarders....it must be truly overwhelming. I encourage anyone that hasn't seen the show to at least give it one watch.

It is sad to see the emotinal situations surrounding hoarding. We have some "aspiring" hoarders in my family for sure. They have threatened to disown anyone who tells the show about them.

I worked as an RN in home health before retiring. I saw this over and over again. Now mind you it was way back before anyone thought to make a TV show out of it. It is a sad situation. I think the saddest part is that they didn't even know that it was a problem. After seeing this show I realized that this happens to both older people and younger people. The show brings this "illness" out in the open so help can be received.

I feel so sad for these people that hoard. My husband's family has these tendancies, but I am the opposite. I am more apt to give away than keep.
