Fight Boredom With An Interesting Hobby
Exercise your mind, develop hidden talents, unleash your creativity
I remember watching an old movie called "Marty." It starred actor Ernest Borgnine. If youare under 40 you probably don't know who I am talking about. But he was a great actor in
his day.
In the movie he sits around with his buddies, hanging out, and one of them always asks,
"What do you want to do?" and the reply is always, "I don't know. What do you want to do?"
If they had had a hobby they wouldn't have had to ask, "What do you want to do?" They
would have had something to do, something creative, interesting and fun.
Stop suffering from boredom, that familiar feeling caused by our automated, precooked
lifestyles. If so,you need to check out these hobby ideas. Hobbies have been found to
be therapeutic as they relieve stress and get the mind active. In this article, you'll find
hobby ideas for every sort of person, from the intellectual to the athlete, from the
homemaker to the attorney.
Many times we are bored because we have become too inactive. If this is your problem
you might like a sports hobby. Have you ever tried tennis? How about golf? Many people
simply love bowling until it becomes an important part of their lives. Sports hobbies get
you out of the house and often are a way to make friends with others. Then again, some
active hobbies can be enjoyed in our own homes, such as weight lifting and doing aerobic
dance to a video.
Speaking of aerobic dance, dancing is another great pastime. When you think of hobby
ideas, don't forget the many forms of dance. Square dancing is fun for people who like
getting together with groups, while ballet and modern dance appeal to the more
contemplative souls. And while we're on contemplation, you might enjoy doing yoga
stretches as a hobby.
Maybe we're feeling bored and listless because we've been cooped up in the house too
long. If that's the problem, here are a few hobby ideas to get you out in the fresh air.
Have you ever thought of taking up canoeing, hiking, or rock climbing? How about getting
involved with an environmental group?
In many states, you can form groups to clean riverbanks and monitor water quality,
and the state will provide perks such as t-shirts, work gloves, and first-aid kits.
Or maybe you'd like studying the flora and fauna of your region. It can be great fun
to stroll through the woods and fields with a field guide, learning to identify each
wildflower, insect, tree, and bird.
There are almost as many hobby ideas as there are bored people in the world, because
everyone puts their own spin on their favorite hobbies. Maybe you'd enjoy decorating
your house with antiques, or learning to bake specialty breads from around the World.
Maybe you'd like to take part in a little theatre production, or learn to play guitar.
What about the fine arts of weaving tapestries or painting with oils? Candle making,
soap making, and many other old-time crafts are being enjoyed again. Truly, with all
these hobby ideas, there is no reason to stay bored for long!
Pine Needle Baskets Make a Great Hobby
Supplies and instructions for weaving pine needle baskets are readily available on the internet.
The human mind is amazing in its ability to use everyday objects to make something useful out of them. You wouldn't think pine needles would be good for much of anything but native americans first started using them to make a variety of baskets and we still use them today. When I started researching pine needle basket weaving it was because I saw an entry booth in a recent festival and the vendor was selling pine needle baskets he had made. They were quite attractive, well made and had a quality to them that you just don't get by going to a discount department store and picking up a basket for a $1 or two.
Kits to learn how to do the weaving are available all over the internet and you can get started pretty cheaply, especially if you live in a piney woods area with loblolly pines or some type of long-leaf pine trees growing in the area. But if not, there are pleanty of people selling prepared pine needles by the pound on ebay or other web sites.
So get started weaving a basket. You just might make something that is of heirloom quality.

Here is a quick resource to aid you in your creativity quest. Order books, kits and supplies to help you achieve your dream.
A Hobby Kit Is A Good Place To Start Your Search
Kits give you an introduction to your potential hobby field
Kits can be a great way to start when you are trying to learn a new craft orto improve existing skills. They take you in small beginner steps and there
is usually an instruction book to go along with it.
If you like what they have to offer, you can progress to more difficult projects.
Some crafts you attempt to learn may be more difficult than others, but a beginner kit is a good way to start.
For instance, if you have been wanting to learn how to do a needlecraft,
such as cross stitch or crewel embroidery, there is no better way to start
than with a kit.
In a hobby kit, you will receive a piece of cloth with the
design already stamped on, yarn or floss in the proper colors and possibly
already cut to the proper lengths, and a needle. You may even get an
embroidery hoop in the kit. When you buy a hobby kit, be sure to read on
the package to see if any other materials or tools will be needed to do the
hobby.
A hobby kit! is also the best way to learn a hobby like building model cars.
In a model car kit, you will get all the pieces you need and detailed instructions.
In some kits, you might also receive paint, a brush, and glue, but read the label.
You might have to provide these things separately.
When choosing Christmas or birthday gifts for a young person, consider a hobby
kit, such as a candle-making kit or a rock tumbling kit. In the fall, the stores are
full of kits that could start a kid on a hobby that would last throughout his life.
You can find small weaving loom kits, glycerine soap making kits, bead craft kits,
wood-burning kits, and art kits.
Another hobby that can be learned from a kit is starting garden seedlings, especially
herbs. A seed starting kit typically contains a pot, a small trowel, seeds, fertilizer,
and a greenhouse dome or cover. Potting soil may need to be purchased separately.
When choosing a hobby kit, be careful to get one that is appropriate for the recipient.
Sometimes a hobby kit is quite challenging. An example of a difficult project is an
electronics kit for wiring one's own radio. If a kit is a gift for a child and it is too hard,
it will wind up gathering dust on some shelf. In fact, it might gather dust even if you
buy it for yourself!
Consider getting a smaller project that you can finish in a short
time so you can get a feel for the hobby. The next hobby kit you buy can be harder
if you find that you enjoy the hobby and have a real desire to learn more about it.

Grow Your Hobby With a Greenhouse
Hobby greenhouses available in a variety of sizes
One hobby you might want to try, but may hesitated to attempt because you have a short growing season, is a hobby greenhouse.A hobby greenhouse is generally not big enough to grow flowers or vegetables commercially. However, it is large enough to give you a place to plant some tomatoes, green beans or fresh greens. Moreover, you can do this even if you live in colder northern areas.
There are several kinds of hobby greenhouses on the market and they range in size from something the size of a phone booth but made all of glass and fitted with shelves. It is designed to maximize the use of a small space to grow as many plants as possible.
Inside the hobby greenhouse the glass shelves let in a large amount of light in order to reach plants lower down.
A relatively inexpensive variation on the phone booth-style hobby greenhouse is shelving that is covered with zippered clear plastic tent. It's a good alternative for hobby gardening on a small scale or to keep seedlings for flowers and houseplants.
Other designs are also made of clear glass or plastic, but they are big enough to walk inside, about the size of a small storage unit.
Prior to starting a hobby greenhouse you should ask yourself some questions about what type of structure you want. What type of plants will you be growing? Consult a gardening book for the requirements of the type of plants you want to grow.
Next, do you have a site for the structure that will provide adequate sunlight.
Hobby greenhouses can be either a stand alone structure or attached to an existing building. Lean-to greenhouses have several advantages. They have easy access from the house or other building and water, electricity, gas and heat are readily available.
Moreover, the lean-to hobby greenhouse is of a more simple construction than other types of attached greenhouses.
Another type of greenhouse is the even-span, which is joined to a building at one end and has the advantages of a lean-to and some of the advantages of a free-standing greenhouse. Both allow light to enter on three sides and the roof as well as providing easy access for people and electrical or gas power.
An added important factor to attached hobby greenhouses is that they are more economical to build because they share a wall with an existing structure.
One of the smallest of greenhouses is a window greenhouse. It usually replaces an existing window and provides a small growing area.
Whether you choose a lean-to, even-span, or free standing style of hobby greenhouse, choose the largest one you can afford. The odds are that one day you wil want a larger space.

Making Crafts For Cash Part I
Make parameters as to what kind of craft you will create
Part IA number of years ago my wife and I briefly dabbled in crafting as a way of earning some extra money. We tried making a number of products. She made a variety of sewn rabbits complete with snazzy dresses and outfits. I made a couple of different types wooden gumball dispensers
They looked great to us because they were part of us, a part of our creativity, but they didn't sell well.
We noticed that at juried craft shows our items were priced higher than similar items. We did the math and figured the other crafters were getting way less than minimum wage for the product they were selling. Maybe they made a few more sales, but they were not making much of a profit.
We figured in the cost of the materials to make each product plus an hourly wage for our time. But we could not just give the items away in order to make a sale. We put a lot of time into them to make sure they were well-made. We felt they were worth the price for what we believed could be an heirloom product.
Eventually, we both tried making woven cloth baskets. We thought those were original and very few people were making them. But we didn't sell enough on a regular basis to make it worth our while. After a while, we gave up on the idea of crafting.
But now we are a little older, a little wiser and have a little more time. We have decided to get back into the crafting game again. We miss the excitement of opening day at a craft show.
The first step to crafting is deciding what to make. Here are the parameters we are looking at:
It has to be something that we can eventually make fairly quickly, but looks as if it is really complicated.
It has to be made of something that is easily and cheaply available. (in the woven baskets there was a lot of competition for fabric remnants out of which we made the baskets.)
It would be great if it was something that you couldn't get at a large discount department store - and you know which one I mean.
It should be something interesting and useful that people want to buy.
The next section below will tell you how to conduct research to find your next craft project.
Research Craft First Before You Create It -Part II
Ideas for crafts are everywhere. Keep your eyes open
Having said that, the next question is how to you find this wonderful item or items?First, keep your eyes open. Look at craft magazines, look at decorating magazines, go to Ebay and see what craft type items have sold.
I see bead stores everywhere. Who would have thought that there was such demand for making items with beads that a supply store could stay in business?
One important aspect, if making beaded jewelry is a hobby that a lot of people are doing, then it is possible that few people will buy your bead products. They are already making their own.
One place to check on popularity of an item is Ebay. Go to Ebay pulse. This will tell you what is popular. Another place to look on Ebay is the completed items section. Click on the "site" button at the bottom of the Ebay page and click on "completed items."
When that page comes up click on one of several categories. For instance, crafts. But items made of beads could also fall under the jewelry category
.
However, in beads and jewelry making category, the items that have ended will be shown. The price in red means it didn't sell - in green are those that sold
.
This will give you an idea of what is selling. Choosing an item to make and sell takes a lot of research and is not something to be taken lightly if you want to make sales and a profit.
Other places to look besides craft and decorating magazines are also attending craft shows to see what others are selling. Maybe you had an idea for something that someone else is doing. Maybe you can do it better.
A few years ago I saw that retro items were popular. One seller on Ebay was making money, not from crafts but selling the plans. He had plans for how to make cigar box purses that looked really great and very original. He consistently sold a lot of the plans.
Would the purses sell well at a craft sale? I didn't see too many people walking around with a cigar box purse. Sometimes you only know for sure when you try to sell them.
Craft Shows Are Good Indicators Of Online Potential - Part III
Use more than one outlet for your craft sales
A good idea as to whether you can go from offline sales to online is how well are they selling at craft shows. If you are thinking of going to the flea market to try for sales, I would be leery of that. Most people at flea markets are looking for really cheaply priced items. You don't want to give away your hard work.Another area you can try to sell your craft is gift shops. When my wife and I were attempting to sell our woven baskets, we targeted about 10 stores. Of that 10 about four actually bought some baskets and we were able to sell them two or three at a time on a regular basis.
I also got the feeling that a few of the other gift shops that turned us down wanted the baskets but were on a tight budget. Keep in mind that you will have to reduce your price some to sell wholesale to gifts shops.
If you try to sell at a retail price, the gift shop would have to price it so high that almost no one would buy the product. Often it is a good idea to sell in quantity, if your craft product is something that you can make fairly quickly without sacrificing quality.
Depending on your craft and how many items you can make supplying gift shops may be one outlet for you.
Another place to sell your craft is through your own website. There are a number of places on the net that can help you set up a website if you are technologically challenged
.
One such place is WarriorForum.com. Here you can click on warriors for hire, and there you will find numerous web master and designers whom you can hire to help you set up your own website for an economical price
.
Also, you could just go to a website like this one - Squidoo - and set it up yourself with a little effort.
The main aspect is to be patient, keep trying. To sell you crafts you will need a variety of outlets. Try Ebay, craft shows, gift shops, web sites and consignment shops.
Try making a variety of projects. If one item doesn't work, maybe something else will.

- Very well written lens and informative. I agree that it is easier to do a hobby for fun and profit which I do in collecting video games. It seems like less work because you are more involved because it is something that interests. Then I have hobbies just for fun like collecting marbles and anything fishing related.
