Step 1: Basic Hobbit Attire

What are Little Hobbits Made of?

In 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R. Tolkien, he tells us that Hobbits are about half the size of humans, are beardless, often have rounded stomachs which is hardly surprising considering how fond they are of food and drink, love bright colors like greens and yellows and have curly hair on their heads and also their shoe-less feet.

Bilbo Baggins Hobbit Costume

Excited about the upcoming Hobbit movie this December? So am I. If you're wanting to dress up as Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, head on over to another page I've made which looks specifically at how you can make a credible Bilbo outfit - seeing as there are no official ones as yet!

If you're interested in discovering more about the new Hobbit movie, I've got a page on that too! You can find out more about the new film directed by Peter Jackson here: Hobbit Release Date and Other Info

Below, you'll discover lots more info on putting together a rustic country Shire outfit below with details on hair, make-up, accessories, feet and more.

Step 2: Hobbit Feet

Buy or Make Your Own Hobbit Feet

Hobbit FeetHobbits do not usually wear shoes because their feet are covered in hair which keeps them warm. The soles of Hobbit feet are tough and leathery so they can walk with bare feet without getting the usual cuts or scrapes that humans would. You can purchase costume Hobbit feet if you like below.

To Make Your Own Hobbit Feet:

  • For an indoor event, you could go barefoot. Spread skin-safe glue (spirit gum) to the tops of your feet and attach hair from a wig, loose human hair (you can curl this with a curling iron) or some fuzzy brown wool to make your own Hobbit feet.

  • For an outdoor event, you could put some close-fitting plimsoles on and then pull over some large skin-color socks to which you've glued or sewn fake hair!

    Step 3: Hobbit Wig

    Hobbit Cosplay Wig

Hobbit are often depicted with curly hair - short curly hair for males and long curly hair for females. They don't always have curly hair so you're safe to use your own hair unless you have it dyed a wacky color or shaved which wouldn't be hobbit-like at all.

    Step 4: Hobbit Accessories

    Hobbit Accessories

Frodo's SwordWhat accessories would you expect to find to enhance your Hobbit costume:

  • Smoking Pipes: we know that smoking isn't great for your health but Hobbits like to indulge in the odd puff, perhaps more so because they like to make smoke rings. You can purchase pretend costume pipes rather than the real thing. A traditional Hobbit pipe would be carved from wood.

  • Walking Sticks: for a long hike or journey, a walking stick will help a Hobbit on his way. Useful for leaning on when you're tiring, supporting your weary frame and short legs when struggling up those hills, for swatting stray branches and long grass out of your way and to bash any nasties which you come across in Middle Earth.

  • Leather Travel Bags: Hobbits are creatures of comfort who like to keep warm and have a well-fed stomach. If they must go on an adventure then a bag is essential to carry food because they are used to eating 6 meals a day, cooking equipment so they can catch things like fish and wild rabbit and cook them over a fire and any other home comforts to keep them company.

  • Swords: some Hobbits like Bilbo Baggins with his sword 'Sting' are lucky enough to aquire their own weaponry which can aid them on perilous adventures. Bilbo managed to eliminate a Giant Spider with his!
  • Frodo's Sword Called Sting

It First Belonged to Bilbo Baggins

Frodo was given his sword, Sting, from his older cousin Bilbo Baggins. This is a replica sword and suitable (and safe) for older children and adults to use as a costume accessory or toy. It glows blue just as the real Sting did whenever orcs were near and it has special sound effects for fun and exciting play.

You can read more about Frodo's Sword on my Sword called Sting page.

    Step 5: Hobbit Jewelry

    Hobbit Jewelry

Hobbit JewelryHobbits like the odd piece of jewelry but they aren't normally possessive over valuable treasures like Dragons and Dwarves can be. Bilbo Baggins became obsessed with the One Ring because it was magical and started to possess him.

In 'The Lord of the Rings,' the members of the Fellowship of the Ring were given stunning Elven Leaf Clasps or brooches which the Hobbit members used to tie their cloaks around them. The Hobbit, Peregrin Took or Pippin as he's more commonly known, deliberately dropped his prized Elven clasp so other members of the Fellowship might be able to find him and Merry who had been captured by the Uruk-Hai and were both in grave peril.

    The One Ring

Bilbo Baggins acquired the One Ring from the creature, Gollum on his adventures in 'The Hobbit.' Bilbo brought it back to the Shire and eventually handed it over to his younger cousin Frodo before he embarked on a dangerous journey of his own.

    Step 6: Hobbit Make Up

    Hobbit Make Up

Hobbits look like short and stout versions of humans bar the very hairy feet and ever-so-slightly pointy ears. They are often round in face, have a rotund stomach and will more than likely have bushy eyebrows (being such a hairy race) and rather red cheeks because they are so fond of fire, drink and making merry!

Extra - Dressing Like A Hobbit

How to Dress Like a Hobbit

Frodo Hobbit CostumeHobbit clothes are of a simple country style and come in mostly earthy colors such as browns and greens but Hobbits really like yellow too. Clothes are fashioned from natural materials like cotton, linen, wool and silk and then dyed naturally so no glaringly artificial glow-in-the-dark colours! Things you'll need to pull off that Hobbit costume look:

  • A long-sleeved off-white or cream dress shirt. The sleeves might be rolled back a bit on a hot day. You might have an old dress shirt which you can use, borrow or purchase from ebay or your local thrift store.

  • Over the shirt: pant suspenders (trouser braces UK).

  • OR an earth coloured vest or waistcoat. Have you got an old wooly sweater or jumper which can be cut off or unpicked at the sleeve seams? You could add 3-5 buttons right down the middle to look just the part.

  • Brown pants or trousers cut inches below the knees. Hobbits have hairy legs and feet so no need to worry about them getting cold! You could easily cut up an old pair of trousers to size. Don't worry about frayed ends because a Hobbit who's been on a long adventure is bound to have frayed pants.

  • An earthy color cloak held around the neck with a brooch or a big button. Perhaps you have an old blanket which can quickly be placed around the shoulders, held together with a safety pin or brooch and transformed into a cloak. Sometimes you'll see a wooly scarf tucked under this for long journeys.
