What in Middle Earth is a Mathom?
Bilbo Baggins here, to clear the air about gift giving hobbit style. You see, hobbits use the term mathom for unique and treasured objects, which are given as presents many times over. Collecting mathoms was a very popular hobby for Hobbits. They'd delight in the search for a mathom that was truly unique to add to their ever-growing collection. In fact, hobbits had the custom of giving away gifts (mathoms) on their birthdays instead of receiving them. A mathom might be some sentimental item that has been treasured. Mathoms tend to have little monetary value but tend to be loaded with memories.

POLL: Musings About Mathoms
Unique Gift Ideas
Some people are giving mathoms instead of the usual traditional kinds of gifts this year for Christmas or birthdays or whatever occasion. What do you think about that?
"Anything that Hobbits had no immediate use for, but were unwilling to throw away, they called a mathom. Their dwellings were apt to become rather crowded with mathoms, and many of the presents that passed from hand to hand were of that sort".
~ J.R.R Tolkien
Hobbit Homes
Unique Hobbit architecture is especially noted by doors and windows that are ROUND!
Hobbit homes were especially notable for their round doors and windows, much like all Hobbit architecture. They were also called hobbit-holes, or tunnel dwellings and were found in hillsides, downs, and banks.
What Did Hobbits Look Like Anyway?
How to know a hobbit when you see one...
Most distinguishing hobbit features:
1) Hobbits were short. They were smaller than dwarves and would usually stand only between two and four feet tall.
2) Check the ears. Hobbit ears were slightly pointed, kind of like Spock.
3) Furry Feet! Hobbit feet were VERY hairy! ...and their feet had leathery soles, so most hobbits never wore shoes. They also were able to walk without making any noise at all.
4) The Hobbits were fond of wearing bright colors, especially yellow and green.
5) Curly brown hair. Hobbit hair was usually bright golden brown, and almost always curly.
Hobbit Habits and their Culture
Hobbits like simple food such as bread, meat, potatoes, and cheese. Hobbits also have a passion for mushrooms and like to drink ale, often in inns similar to the English country folk. Tolkien chose the name 'Shire' for one part of Middle Earth where the Hobbits live, and that was clearly inspired by and reminiscent of the English Shires.
Hobbits enjoyed farming, food, ales, parties and the giving and receiving of presents. They were friendly and peace-loving, and did not concern themselves much with the happenings of the world beyond the Shire.
They enjoy seven meals a day, when they can get them - breakfast (7 a.m.), second breakfast (9 a.m.), elevenses (11 a.m.), luncheon (1 p.m.), afternoon tea (4 p.m.), dinner (6 p.m.), and supper (8 p.m.)
How Old is that Hobbit in the Window?
Hobbits live longer than humans.
Hobbits were clearly related to humans as a race, but lived much longer. The average lifespan of a Hobbit was 100 years, and some even lived until they were 130 years old! Live long and prosper, indeed!
A young hobbit was not accepted as a mature adult until age 33, compared to age18 for humans. So a Hobbit who is 50 years old would only be considered middle-aged.
Another Hobbit Habit
Smoking the pipe-weed, a hobbit habit.
Hobbits also enjoyed smoking an ancient variety of tobacco, which they referred to as 'pipe-weed'
and no... it was NOT weed as in marijuana weed. Many enjoy that word play over there ===============>
but hobbits didn't smoke pot. Instead their pipe-weed was a unique form of sweet-smelling tobacco, most likely related to their love of gardening and herb-lore.
Hobbits Were Hoarders!
Yes hobbits were hoarders. They were obsessive about their mathom collections, and couldn't even consider the decluttering option if that meant throwing away their prescious mathom collections. Now that was a real problem when you consider their tiny homes. Those little holes in the earth had no basements nor attics to store stuff in, so they tended to be crammed full of mathoms. Some hobbits even stored their mathoms in museums! Yes, a mathom museum. Guess maybe that's sort of like an antique mall without price tags, think?
The Wizard Gandalf
was not a hobbit, but a great wizard who was both admired and also feared by Hobbits. You see, hobbits were usually friendly and happy-go-lucky, but they also tended to be shy of men. Hobbits like a quiet and peaceful life, and Gandalf brought adventure to Bilbo Baggins, encouraged him toward adventures outside the shire. So Gandalf was frowned upon sometimes. The other hobbits who saw Bilbo returning from his long journey to the Lonely Mountain with his steed laden with great chests of gold thought... 'that Gandalf is trouble'.

A few examples of mathom gifts...
Royal Palm Bottle
During the 1960s, the Coca-Cola Company produced this Royal Palm Soda Pop in a few different flavors. Growing up I remember it well, since dad worked for Coca-Cola, and would bring home a case of it now and then for a special treat. My siblings and I all LOVED it, so when I found a Royal Palm bottle, I saved it and gave it to one of my brothers as a mathom gift. He loved it!
The Kookaburra
A friend who had traveled to Australia many times had brought back this bird sculpture of a kookaburra, native to Australia. After a few decades she decided to release the kookaburra to friends at a mathom party, where a few of them knew the tune of "Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bushes he, laugh kookaburra laugh, kookaburra gay your life must be." HILARIOUS! Maybe you had to be there.
