A General Introduction to Hobby Aquaponics

By Ronald E. Hudkins

type=textAquaponics is the process of growing plants in water. Rather than using dirt as the growth medium, this new process uses water. The idea behind this process is that when water is used as the primary growing source, the result will be a fresher, more "nature friendly" product. The process of aquaponics, can give growers an environmentally beneficial option. While at the same time, use a very large or very small growing area. Because this system can be used in backyard gardens or apartment patios, aquaponics has become a profitable hobby for some home gardeners.

As a nation, our country is buried in garbage. Landfills are loaded in waste and refuse that cannot be recycled. Even with the best efforts to recycle, the trash continues to grow. Many items in the landfill will not decompose for centuries, if ever. As this problem continues to grow, scientists try to come up with uses for this excess. Paper is made from the excess pulp of trees that have been turned into lumber. Excess corn and old frying oil from restaurants, have given us another option for gasoline. In like manner, polluted water from large fish farms destroy our waterways. But research has been able to turn this polluted by-product into clean water through the science of aquaponic gardens.

Roughly defined, aquaponics can be described as a productive system where the best of aquaponics and hydroponics come together. In hydroponic systems, man-made nutrients are mixed to create a healthy growth medium as the plants live on the water. In this system, by-products in the root system, create salts and other harmful growths that must be removed from the water frequently. Aquaponics took the water part of the hydroponics system and re-created it so that the plants could grow in water, but with no harmful toxin build up.

Science is a wonderful thing. However, our American researchers were not the first to develop this system. First developed in ancient Egyptian and Aztec civilizations, the rice paddies in China were also known to use this system. To be brief, the nuts and bolts behind this system are simple. Fish are grown in a tank. The plants grow on top of the water. As the plants grow, their roots hang down below the surface of the water and absorb the nutrients from the by-products of the fish. These by-products that are normally toxic to the fish, are good food for the plants.
This system is one of those described in the beginning paragraph, that create a win-win situation

The best thing about aquaponics is that this system will work in a container as small as a glass vase or as large as an acre or more. The system is the same. Fish live in the water and eat off the nutrients produced by the plants that live on top of the water. At the same time, all of this happens in a cycle. The fish live from the nutrients from the plant roots and at the same time, keep the water free from any toxins that my build up. Hobbyists use this same system to create beautiful backyard water gardens while at the same time complimenting a balanced cycle with nature's plants and animals.

How Many Aquaponics Tanks Do I Need?

By Ronald E. Hudkins

aquaponic tanksAquaponics is the farming method that combines both aquaculture and hydroponics. Both of these farming techniques are environmental friendly, and when they are combined their benefits are even greater. The greatest benefit that comes with aquaponics is the conservation of water and soil nutrients. There are two stages involved in the set up of an aquaponics system. One stage involves setting up a garden where you will grow your plants. The other stage involves setting up an aquarium for the fish. Proper planning before you set up your aquaponics farming system will enable you to identify the correct number of tanks that will be sufficient.

The number of tanks that you need will depend on a number of factors. How big is your aquaponics system? If you have a large project, you might want to have more than one tank. However, most people practice small-scale aquaponics. Therefore, they only need one or two big tanks. The number of fish that you want in your system also factors in. The recommended amount of water is normally one gallon for every fish. This means that if you want more than a hundred fish in your aquaponics system, you have to have a tank or tanks than can hold 100 gallons of water at any one time.

The number of tanks that you will have will also depend on your budget. If you do not have enough money to buy and maintain multiple tanks, then you can manage with one or two tanks. However, you have to ensure that your tanks will be enough for the fish to survive in. The issue of maintenance is also a factor to consider when you are thinking about how many tanks are ideal for your aquaponics project. Maintenance involves ensuring that the water temperature is normal and the pH is not too high or too low. Maintenance also involves making sure that there is sufficient and efficient air circulation in the tanks. If you think that you cannot carry out all these maintenance activities in many tanks at the same time, then the fewer your tanks the better.

There are some people who prefer many small-sized fish tanks while others prefer fewer but larger tanks. The number of fish tanks that you want to get is entirely up to you. However, you should also realize that maintaining a small tank takes much more effort and time than maintaining a large tank. If you are a busy person practicing aquaponics as nothing more than a hobby, then you should consider getting a larger, easier to manage fish tank. However, if you are into aquaponics as a full time job, you can get smaller multiple tanks because you will have all the time to manage them.

If you are looking for a farming technique, which will enable you, to conserve the environment, think aquaponics. While planning what you want to do with this farming system, do not forget to plan for the right number of tanks.

What Exactly Is Aquaponics?

Some Basics

What is Aquaponics

Aquaponics is an interesting system that's been around for hundreds of years, and involves cultivating plants and aquatic creatures, such as fish, in the same recirculating aquatic environment. It has some problems - the waste from the animals is extremely helpful for plants as it accumulates, but can be toxic to the fish, for instance. Here's a look at aquaponics and what it's used for.

In a good aquaponic system, plants are grown in a way that lets them get the most out of the nutrient rich water. Hydroponic growing is common. The plants consume the nutrients, and should be set up so that they eliminate the toxicity of the water for fish and other animals in it. Often, the water is cycled around the plants, so that they can clean it, then returned to the animal environment.

An aquaponic system doesn't discharge water or exchange it with other systems. In order to maintain the environment, these systems rely on the relationship between the animals and the plants, and new water is only added to replace water that's evaporated or has been absorbed by plants. First practiced in Ancient Egypt and by the Aztecs, this system is used modernly in all kinds of formats. Systems vary from small home units to huge commercial ones, and can be either fresh water based or salt water based. China, Thailand, and other countries in Asia have made extensive used of aquaponics for centuries.

Most fish farmed this way currently are nile tilapia, though other fish and aquatic creatures can be produced this way, too. For instance, as tilapia are banned in Australia, silver and jade perch, barramundi, fresh water crayfish and trout are often grown. Green leafy vegetables are often grown in the hydroponic part of the system.

The big advantages of an aquaponic system include conservation of water, easy organic fertilization of plants, and elimination of the need for waste disposal (usually used to produce fish). Less land is needed to produce crops, plant production requires fewer resources, and efficient installations can be built near markets. That means food doesn't have to travel that far.

Of course, there are disadvantages, too. The cost of the setup can be significant at the beginning, the number of possible configurations mean a wide range of results, and some installations require a lot of power and technological solutions. Designed well, an aquaponic system is very efficient, but not all systems are designed well. It's also possible for aquaponic systems to fail in a number of ways. Feedstock for fish grown in these system can also be of environmental concern, since most fish are fed on wild caught fish meal. However, there are some more sustainable alternative options available, including plant based foods and duckweed.

Advantages of Aquaponics

In a Nutshell

Advantages of AquaponicsIn the aquatic kingdom, nothing goes to waste. Yet, many are under the impression that aspects of the aquatic world can be dismissed or overlooked or discarded. Such is the case with nutrient rich water that many assume is little more than waste materials. Of course, this is most definitely not the right way to look at such water and those that have a basic understanding of aquaponics will tell you.

What is aquaponics and what are some of the benefits that it provides? The nutrient possessing water is used as a means of expanding the cycle of life by using the water as a means of supporting plant life. In short, the fish aid in developing the water which is then used to feed the plants. This leads to the development of an excellent ecosystem that can greatly expand the life supporting benefits that the ecosystem can deliver. Does this benefit the fish in anyway? You could say the plants deliver what is needed to enhance the value of the water for the fish allowing the fish to draw its own nutrients from it. Again, this is a continuation of the cycle of life that is so oft talked about.

There are various other benefits associated with the concept of aquaponics that are sometimes overlooked. Namely, there is no negative impact on the environment due to placing additives into the water to feed the fish and plants. Instead, the two will help each other grow in a healthy and mutually supportive environment without external interference.

Probably the worst of the external components that could be introduced into the water would be herbicides and pesticides. These may provide short term benefit but their long term impact can prove disastrous. Really, is there any benefit to adding these substances to the water without really having a idea as to whether or not they will actually work? Follow the more natural and harmonious method of using aquaponics for a solution. This will lead you to much better results in the long term and it can do so without the many varied negative hazards on the environment. Clearly, that is a excellent combination to explore.

You could also say that one of the many excellent advantages of employing the concept of aquaponics deals with its ability to utilize bacteria for the end goal of converting waste nutrients into something helpful. This certainly 'opens the door' for bacterial agents to enhance an ecosystem's function. And natural bacteria are certainly much better than the chemical or inorganic components sometimes used to boost an ecosystem for short term gains with long term negative consequences. Aquaponic ventures are also not complicated for a reasonably sized company to embark upon. Yes, there are costs associated with the process but a sizeable company can certainly handle such a concept with lesser costs than most would assume. And the end results can prove to be more significant than many ever dreamed possible. And with enthusiasm for aquaponics growing rapidly, it is no surprise additional larger sized environmentally conscious business will explore its benefits and advantages.
