Harmonious Hockey Songs

Hello Out There! We're On The Air!

I love music and I love hockey. Anytime that the two can be combined in an artistic or humorous way, then I am interested to hear it. Researching these songs, I have found, is not too convenient or time-efficient for those interested, as am I. That is why I intend to focus this lens on songs about hockey and dedicate it to become the most comprehensive collection about the subject. If there's a song and it's about hockey, then you will see it on here. If you don't see it on here, then you can message me about it or add the song to the list yourself. Either way, eventually, all songs about hockey are destined to end up here.

The Zambonis

Claiming to be influenced by The Beatles and Wayne Gretzky, The Zambonis are the undisputed #1 band when it comes to singing songs about hockey. That's because they don't sing about anything else. It's %100 hockey all the time. Formed in 1991,the Bridgeport, Conn. band has garnered a cult following, with songs such as Lost My Teeth and Breakaway and performing live across North America in their ever-present, assorted hockey jerseys, accompanied by a large , monkey suit-wearing mascot, in tribute to another song of their's, Hockey Monkey. Consisting of a group of accomplished musicians and recreational hockey players, the group infuses their songs with a diverse range of musical styles and humourous lyrics. You need only browse some of the song titles to get an idea of what these musical hockey nuts have to offer.

The band's members/instruments/positions are:
Dave Schneider(guitar, singer, defenseman) Jon Aley (guitar, bass, winger), Steve Tanski (guitar, bass, forward), Mat Orefice (drums, enforcer) Tarquin Katis (hardcore vocalist, center), Peter Katis (Producer, chippy but solid defensemen)and Matt Gonzales (Hockey Monkey)

The Hanson Brothers

Formed as a side project by the members of the group, Nomeansno, The Hanson Brothers are another hockey-lovin' musical band who devote a great deal of their time to songs about hockey. Not to be confused with the the teen-pop group Hanson, this band's name was inspired by the bespectacled, stinkin-root-beer-hatin', toy- car-playin', goon-line-skatin' Hanson brothers characters in the movie "Slap Shot". The band members even have each adopted Hanson as their last name and sport glasses similar to the movie characters.

The Hockey Song

aka The Good Old Hockey Game

Originally written and sung by Canada's Stompin' Tom Connors, the much loved Hockey Song has become a staple in all arenas, far and wide. In fact, the affection for the song has been demonstrated by way of several cover versions over the years by various acts. Now, I will always love Stompin' Tom's version but it is always great to see someone else's take on the classic song. Here, along with the original, is one such version. Old school vs. new. The Hockey Theme

aka the Hockey Night In Canada Theme

It has been called, Canada's Second National Anthem. For nearly forty years, CBC's Hockey Night In Canada has had the same iconic, opening theme intro, beginning its program every Saturday night with a familiarity that people all across Canada have grown to know and love. It has become one of the longest running themes in TV history. Instantly recognizable from the moment the first few notes are heard, for decades, it was an anthem that beckoned Canadians to drop what they were doing because that sound meant one thing. It meant it was Saturday night and it was time to sit down and watch hockey. After years of repeated listenings, it became so ingrained in the Canadian public's mind, that no one could imagine there being any other theme associated with the game.

It was written by Dolores Claman in 1968, who was contracted by McLaren Advertising when they were commissioned by the CBC to create a new promotional tune for HNIC. Born in Vancouver, B.C., Claman trained at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York on a graduate scholarship. She went on to have a prolific career as a composer for advertising, television, film and theatre.

Originally intended as a powerful musical statement to advertise its program, HNIC soon made "The Hockey Theme" its opening theme and it had been a mainstay ever since.

HNIC Theme Poll

After 40 years, a new licensing agreement was unable to be reached between the CBC and the composer of "The Hockey Theme", Dolores Claman. It was decided that the CBC would drop the song and hold a nation wide contest open to anyone who wanted to compose an original hockey anthem for Hockey Night In Canada. The grand prize would be $100,000. The rights to the former theme were eventually bought by rival TV station CTV for reportedly 2.5 to 3 million dollars, to be used in perpetuity for TSN hockey broadcasts and the 2010 CTV broadcast hockey games of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Video Game Music

Virtual hockey

Nowadays, if you are in the mood to play hockey, you don't have to really lace up your skates and suffer through the cold temperatures. Graphics in video games have gotten so far advanced, that it almost looks and feels like you're playing for real.

Along with the sights of the video games, came the sounds. To this day, some of the electronic music for these hockey games bring back great memories. The music I am talking about is the type that was heard while you were setting up the parameters of the game, like pre-game music. Other types were, intermission music, end of game music and goal music.

Have a look through these and see if the sounds bring back back any fond memories.

TV Hockey Program Themes

ESPN, HNIC, VS., NHLNBC, FSN

A good opening theme is essential to many TV shows and that is no different to the various networks that have broadcast NHL games over the years. The intro is key to grabbing the viewers attention and must be a compelling piece of music, one that gives the impression that it is announcing a very special event about to take place. It is this musical composition that brands the product you are about to see. It is an opportunity to make a first impression that you won't forget, associating the theme with the game. Some become more memorable than others.

Lady of Spain

Classic clip from Slap Shot

For reasons I could never figure out on my own, I never knew why Paul Newman's character (Reggie Dunlop) went into a rage when the arena organist started playing Lady of Spain. Anyone have any idea? I would love to hear any explanation.

Lockout Songs

In 2004-05, NHL owners were growing concerned that players' salaries were escalating beyond control and had been for a while. Unable to keep their spending habits in check and undermining their colleagues, the owners all agreed to lock out the players until they accepted a salary cap. The players stood their ground and as a result, the entire season was canceled.

Rabid hockey fans who needed their fix of NHL action, grew restless. Surely there was a way to resolve the situation, they thought. Both sides were accused of greed and both were committed to staying the cause and fighting for what they believed was right.

One way to protest the lockout peacefully and get your message across was through songs and that is exactly what these bands did.

R.I.P. Reggie Dunlop. After hearing about the sad news that Paul Newman had lost his battle with lung cancer, I couldn't help but think of the Lady of Spain clip from his movie Slap Shot, that I have posted on this lens.

I hope they don't play Lady of Spain on harps in heaven. We'll miss you Paul.
