Make Hogwarts House Badges - Harry Potter Accessories

Hogwarts Uniform - the House Badge

The four houses of Hogwarts are Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. They are named after the four founding witches and wizards - Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff.

Professor McGonagall is the head of Gryffindor house, which is the house the Sorting Hat selects for Harry Potter and his new friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger when they first arrive at Hogwarts. Nearly Headless Nick is the house ghost. The colours of Gryffindor are red and gold, and it is symbolised by a lion.

Professor Snape is the head of Slytherin house, which has Harry's nemesis, Draco Malfoy, as a member. Lord Voldemort was also a member of Slytherin when he attended Hogwarts as Tom Riddle. The Bloody Baron is the house ghost. Slytherin colours are dark green and silver, and it is symbolised by a snake.

Professor Flitwick is the head of Ravenclaw house. Harry dates Ravenclaw member, Cho Chang, for a little while. The Grey Lady is Ravenclaw's representative ghost, the house colours are blue and bronze, and it is symbolised by an eagle.

Professor Sprout is the head of Hufflepuff, proudly represented by the late Cedric Diggory. The Fat Friar is the Hufflepuff house ghost, the house colours are yellow and black, and it is symbolised by a badger.

Make Hogwarts house badges

You will need a house badge if you decide to make cloaks and tunics. These are worn on the left hand side of the chest.

You can make the badge as simple or as fancy as you are able - from a golden "G" on red for Gryffindor, bronze "R" on blue for Ravenclaw, silver "S" on green for Slytherin, or black "H" on golden-yellow for Hufflepuff, to a detailed lion, eagle, snake, or badger with the appropriate background colour.

See how Harry Potter Lexicon have interpreted the badges.

Gryffindor

The colours of Gryffindor are red and gold, and it is symbolised by a golden lion on a gules field ("gules" is the heraldic term for red, and "field" means the background). In this picture the lion is "rampant", the term for standing up.

Alternatively, for a simpler badge, use a golden "G" on a red background.

Head of Gryffindor: Professor Minerva McGonagall
House Ghost: Sir Nicholas De Mimsy-Porpington

Ravenclaw

Ravenclaw house colours are blue and bronze, and it is symbolised by a bronze eagle on an azure field (blue background). The eagle pictured here is described with wings rising.

Alternatively, use a bronze "R" on a blue background.

Head of Ravenclaw: Professor Filius Flitwick
House Ghost: The Grey Lady

Slytherin

Slytherin colours are dark green and silver, and it is symbolised by an argent snake on a vert field (ie, a silver snake on an emerald green background).

Alternatively, use a silver "S" on a green background.

Head of Slytherin: Professor Severus Snape, later Professor Horace Slughorn
House Ghost: The Bloody Baron

Hufflepuff

Hufflepuff colours are golden yellow and black, and it is symbolised by a sable badger on an Or field (ie a black badger on a golden background).

Alternatively, use a black "H" on a yellow background.

Head of Hufflepuff: Professor Pomona Sprout
House Ghost: The Fat Frier
