Choosing a Harmonica That's Right for You
With So Many Different Types of Harmonicas, It's Confusing
If you're a beginning harmonica player, you're probably having trouble choosing a harmonica. With a little info, however, you can make an informed decision and get a good harp.
If you know nothing about music, you've got to understand a few key concepts to really know what's going on with harmonicas. In music, we use a scale, with note values assigned letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. After G, the scale starts over at A. In addition to these natural notes, there are also accidental notes, given the designation of sharp (#) or flat (b). These notes occur between the natural notes and are notated by adding the symbol for sharp or flat to the note name, e.g. A#. Notes played in sequence are called a scale, and in order to make these scales "sound right" we have to raise or lower certain notes in the sequence with an accidental. We call this the scale's key.
Knowing about keys is necessary to understand different harmonicas. The diatonic harmonica, or blues harp, only contains notes from the key of the harmonica. A C harp can only play C, D, E, F, G, A and B. A only A, B, C#, D, E, F# and G#. Only instruments, such as the piano or guitar are able to play all keys without changing. Because of this, the harmonica player needs a range of different keyed harps to be able to change with the band.
As a beginning player, you want to get a harmonica in the key of C. The main reason for this is that when you become more advanced, and learn to bend notes, you can get a much wider range of pitches from the harmonica. The C harp has all the natural notes. With the inclusion of bending, you can hit most if not all accidental notes as well.
