Hokitika New Zealand - Our Adventure in Photos

Hokitika New Zealand is One of My Favorite Stops on the West Coast of the South Island

Spectacular scenery and sunsets made for some wonderful photos of Hokitika, New Zealand, the Hub of the South Island's West Coast. (See my photos here). This little town, known world wide for its greenstone (jade) offered us so much more. So, please have a look at our photo tour of the town and its surrounding forests, gorge and waterfalls. Despite all of the natural beauty found here, the highlight of Hokitika for us was a little shop called Bonz 'n Stonz, where the girls were able to design and carve their own bone necklaces.

This page is part of a series on our Sept - Oct 2010 driving trip across New Zealand. It is our adopted home, we have been here for 8 years. We have explored many corners of this amazing country, and this page highlights a little town on the West Coast of the South Island - Hokitika, New Zealand.

Historically, Hokitika New Zealand has a varied past including mining, milling and dairy. In the late 1860's the gold rush enticed 1000's to shift to Hokitika, making it the largest town on the West Coast at the time. At it's peak, the gold boom produced and shipped out over 800kg of gold to Melbourne, Australia each month. However, as with many other towns established during the gold rush, the gold ran out and the local population had to rely on timber. Today the main industry are tourism and dairy.

Bonz 'n Stonz - A Highlight for our Girls

With the help of tutor Steve, they carved their own bone necklaces

bonz 'n stonz

Bonz 'n Stonz was a highlight for our girls and one of our recommendations for anyone who can schedule a few extra hours in Hokitika, New Zealand. With the assistance of master carver Steve Gwaliasi the girls were able to design and carve their own bone necklaces. What a special treat and awesome souvenir. Bonz 'n Stonz is located right in town, and there were plenty of great places for Jeff and I to enjoy a coffee whilst the girls did their carvings. Or, we could have made a bone, jade or shell design of our own. According the the Bonz 'n Stonz webpage, it is the only workshop currently running in New Zealand, in which you may carve: jade, bone or shell.

Maori Koru or Maori Fish Hook are both very popular New Zealand designs.

The Koru represents the un-curling fern frond as it opens up bringing new life and purity to the world. It also represents peace, tranquility and spirituality along with a strong sense of re-growth or new beginnings.

The Fish Hook ( hei matau) signifies abundance and plenty, strength and determination. A good luck charm for catching good luck and positive energy, and safe journey over water.
