Vacation in a Cottage or House in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales

For years, I've dreamed of renting a cottage in England or Ireland for a vacation or holiday as the British call it.

Now I've discovered the Holiday Lettings website and can spend hours reading the descriptions of cottages, houses and apartments available for renting. As I read the descriptions, I can picture myself standing with guidebook in hand by that historic cottage. In my imagination, I'm setting out for a walking tour or looking for the nearest pub for a ploughman's lunch. I look at the photos of the interiors and think of curling up on the sofa with a good book in front of the fireplace for the evening.

How different it would be from staying in an impersonal hotel. I'll share with you my enthusiasm for this way of spending a holiday.

Decide What Activities Are Important to You

Do you want to take long walks in the countryside? Maybe spend evenings in the pub chatting with the locals or listening to folk music. Perhaps you want to be close to water or a forest. Would you want to search your family roots in an area or visit museums?

The Holiday Lettings website lets you choose different options to search so you'll find the right locale and the right residence for your holiday.

Plan the Sights You Want to See on Your Cottage Holiday in the UK

Great Britain (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive, engrossing, and just plain fun-to-read guidebook than the Eyewitness Travel Guide: Great Britain. Spilling over with all sorts of useful information for the traveler, you'll find three-dimensional drawings, floor plans, and detailed neighborhood maps, as well as timelines, charts, and even popular bus routes. Broken into several sections--"Introducing Great Britain," "Region by Region" (including London and environs, Scotland, and Wales), "Traveler's Needs," and "Survival Guide"--the guide paints a complete picture of the country. Readers will especially appreciate the hundreds of color photos of everything from London's double-decker buses to the ancient formations at Stonehenge. You'll also find street-by-street illustrated city walks (Covent Garden, Westminster), as well as scenic hikes in the Scottish highlands and the Lake District, with plenty of listings for inns and fish-and-chip taverns along the way. --Jill Fergus

What Kind of Holiday Home Would You Like to Stay in?

I was fascinated to see the variety of house styles that the Holiday Lettings website offered for locations all over the globe. After I take my cottage vacation to England and Ireland, I'll have to sample some of the unique places they have to let.

Here Are the Regions I Would Choose for My Cottage Holiday

Wincanton in England and the Ulster regions in Ireland

These are both areas that my ancestors came from and I'd have a great time staying in a cottage and imagining what life was like hundreds of years ago before they left for America. I could check genealogy information locally and visit museums and old graveyards. What fun it would be.

Where Would You Go on Your Dream Vacation?

  • wordstock Mar 18, 2011 @ 8:31 am | delete
OK, when are we going. I have always wanted to explore Ireland and Scotland and then move on to England. It must be all the books I read as a child but the lure is strong. Guess I need to make a million more lenses so I can afford the trip. It was nice however, visiting through your lens and now I am off to view all the places to rent. .

I was born in England, but was so young when we moved to the states that I have no memories of it. I've always wanted to go back and explore.

I think we share some of the same dreams! What a hard list to choose from, I went back and forth several times....I guess my dream vacation would have to be on the long side so I could stay in several. I would have never thought of a tree house, but that seems to be drawing me right now.....a tree house condo with many levels and bridges to wonderful tree house rooms.....dreaming!

We have been discussing where we want to travel to, and the girls really want to go to England.

This is a great way to holiday/vacation in England. My partner and I are going to be doing this over Christmas and we live in the UK I would really recommend it. My most recent cottage holiday was in Wales, a town called Dolgellau (prononced dollgethlee) its very near the Cader Idris mountain which is amazing and a short drive to the coast and the Irish Sea. Another great way to see the UK is by canal boat holiday too.

Beautiful. I am planning to visit UK next year and your lens convinced me to look out for a holiday cottage rather than staying in any hotel. Thumbs up.

Great idea. I have always wanted to stay in a cottage for 3 full moons on the side of a loch in northern UK. I will one day and your lens helps me reawaken that dream. Thank you.
