How To: Have A Holiday Garden

Ranked #25,301 in Home & Garden, #384,924 overall

What is a holiday garden?

By "holiday garden", I mean dressing up your garden (your flowerbed, if you will) for the holidays. And, not just Christmas, although that is a favorite of mine. I mean all of them: Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. And in between times, you dress the garden for the season.

You don't need a lot of fancy plantings and seasonal flowers to make this work. You just need a sense of fun and a love for color and you can make it work. I use the garden near my front door for my holiday garden and I'll walk you through how to do it for each one and tell you what you need. That bed starts with a variegated hosta and a coral bell and a lot of rocks in the landscaping. In addition in the summer I plant some impatiens in it. The rest is all holiday.

And, let me clarify - I'm not talking about decorating your house. Most folks will do that for Christmas and many for a lot of other holidays also. I am only talking about creating a small space of color, laughter, and joy. A snippet of garden to express a holiday. A statue, a flag, a flower pot. Simple fun.

Surely you have a spot you can use to give some cheer, don't you? Let's see what you'll need to do it up.

You're going to need this:

For almost every suggestion I am going to make, you're going to have a small banner flag. Which means you need a holder for it. Plain or fancy is your choice, but here is the one I prefer.

A Winter Garden

The Winter garden doesn't get much. Christmas is done, and I'm waiting for Valentine's Day. But, I will find my little flag holder and punch it through the snow to fly my winter flag. The flag with the beautiful snow is enough for the holiday garden to keep me cheered through January.

A Valentine's Day Garden

February in Northeast Ohio is generally still pretty snowy and forbidding outside. For this holiday, I just use a simple, but pretty flag on the smal holder to remind me that it is the season of love.

A St. Patricks Day Garden

By the middle of March, I am usually square in the middle of not knowing what the weather will do at all. I can tell you that I don't have any flowers sprouting yet, so I take some shamrocks on sticks and "plant" them around a flag like this one to brighten everything up.

A Spring Garden

Lovely Spring! Heralding its arrival with tender shoots and budding leaves and trees. Such a time of awakening. It is now that I will bring out the cute frog that you see prominently in my Summer Garden and set him near a beautiful, bright and cheery Spring flag. These simple things along with my freshly planted annuals bring this holiday garden to life.

An Easter Garden

Since Easter is not on the same date every year, I always try to make sure that my decorations are not reliant upon good weather. So, even though there may be flowers budding by the time it rolls around, I have color from other ornaments for this holiday garden. While I do use an Easter Flag, it gets pushed into the corner a bit so that an adorable Easter Bunny statue like what you see here can be the focus. Once you have the right adorable bunny, you only need sprinkle a few plastic eggs around him and your little holiday garden is set for another holiday.

A Summer Garden

Before and after the Fourth Of July, I use my little summer flags to brighten up my holiday garden. I also have some wacky bird sculptures, some miniature flamingos, and a ceramic frog to round things out while the summer heat beats down.

A Fourth Of July Garden

For the Fourth of July, I don't add a lot to my holiday garden as the flowers are usually in full force for me. However, I can't let the holiday slip by without acknowledgement. So, I use my trusty garden flag as the focal point, and use 4x6 inch American flags on their own little sticks as a border through the garden.

A Fall Garden

A Fall garden is a bit bittersweet for me, the summer flowers are fading, soon to be cleared off entirely. So I cheer up my little holiday garden with a snappy fall flag and some tiny hay bales. The hay bales are so cute, I really can't wait to out them out each year. You can also if you like add a pot of pretty golden or purple mums. (I never have good luck with growing real ones, so I use silk in a weighted pot for this.)

A Halloween Garden

Halloween is fun in the holiday garden! You keep the small hay bales you used for your Fall garden and change flags. I've found a really cute one below for you. You must of course place a few pumpkins in your flowerbed - this always works out well for me since the beds are all cleared off of their summer glory and need a bit of life in them. Also fun, add a bit of graveyard fencing and a headstone that is size appropriate for your own holiday garden. I also like to lean a witches broom up against the house, as if she has just parked it there.

By all means, this is not all the decorating you can do for Halloween. There are so many wickedly cool decorations available now. But I am only taking you on an annual journey for your holiday garden, the rest of the house is for another day.

A Thanksgiving Garden

Aaahhh Thanksgiving. This is definitely one of my favorite holidays and I love finding little treats for my holiday garden. A flag is a must for this holiday, and I have a great one for you below. In addition to your flag, you should leave out the pumpkins and gourds that you used for Halloween. The hay bales, I think, must go though. But you can certainly bring back the silk potted mum that you had out for Fall, it will look wonderful.

A Christmas Garden

You absolutely must (in my opinion) have lots of poinsettias and holly branches for your Christmas Garden. I use one large poinsettia display in a pretty foil covered pot (I make it myself from sprays from the craft store so that I can put extra weight in the bottom of it so it doesn't get blown away.) and several sprays of artificial poinsettia flowers and holly leaves with berries. Once you have your flowers in place, you can place your holiday tchotchkes in your Christmas Garden.

What Else For The Christmas Garden?

This is the one holiday that my garden doesn't have a flag. I like to focus on the beautiful poinsettia and holly arrangements. Nestled in with some cute figurines and candy canes. And, everything is easy to dust the snow off of. Below I'm giving you a start on some good decorations.

Gardening Must Haves!

You will find that you enjoy your time in the garden much more if you have the proper tools for it. You will find that they are relatively inexpensive compared to other things you buy for your house and you can still get quality. I also like to have a little tote or basket so that I can have everything I need with me while working. And, the necessity of a kneeling pad should be self explanatory if you have ever pulled even one weed.

What a fabulous idea to have a holiday garden, and what a great selection of ways to make one! Lots of people have lights and Christmas displays in December in their front gardens here but I love the idea of decorating the actual garden with a theme too :) And a Halloween garden... it's got to be done!

Mom-in-law used to go crazy with the poinsettias everywhere, so I think y'all would have gotten along well. :) Garden flags can set a mood in nothing flat. I love the festive, happy look of them. :)
