Holiday Gifts to Help the World

Alternative Gifts that Make a Difference
Many of us in the world have more than we need. In terms of needs versus wants, if you have a television, you have more than you need.
So, what can you get that person who has everything or at least more than they need?
How about, in lieu of a gift, making a donation to places where basic needs are not being met?
There are many organizations that will accept donations in someone's name, even sending them a card describing how the gift is helping. Below are ten ways you can bring joy to your loved ones and help the world at the same time.

Contents at a Glance
Oxfam America Unwrapped
Combat hunger and poverty.

OXFAM is an international organization that creates partnerships to combat hunger, poverty and injustice.
Type of Gifts
* For animal lovers, the gift of a goat is $50.
* For gardners, you can plant a vegetable garden for $30.
* For kids or art lovers, buy art supplies for kids for $18.
* For someone interested in business or a coffee lover, invest in a fair trade coffee cooperative for $50.
How it Works
1. Select your gift.
2. Receive a card that you can personalize either online or in the mail.
3. Your donation goes where it will have the biggest impact.

The Cheetah Conservation Fund
A Squidoo Charity
For someone who loves cheetahs or other wild animals, you can make a donation below or sponsor a cheetah in someone's name at their website.
Or shop for someone at the Cafe Press store below, where all proceeds go to the Cheetah Conservation Fund.

The Heifer Project
Combat hunger and poverty.
HEIFER INTERNATIONAL, works to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. They specialize in livestock and training.
Gifts include:
* A heifer for $500, because when a family has a cow, they always have milk.
* A flock of chicks for $20, and a family will always have eggs.
* The gift of an ark for $5,000, the gift that keeps on giving. A family receives two animals, and promises to pass on the offspring to someone else in need.
* Knitter's Gift Basket for $480, a family receives four animals that provide wool.
The Girl Effect
Help girls in the third world.
How can the gift of a cow help a young girl in poverty? Watch this video from The Girl Effect.
Diabetes Research Institute
A Squidoo Charity
If someone you love has diabetes, the perfect gift for them might be a donation to the Diabetes Research Institute, the only institution working solely on a cure for diabetes.
With your donation, you can send a holiday e-card to that special someone to let them know how much you care about their health. Just select your e-card, personalize it, preview it, and make your donation. Simple as pie!
PLAN USA
Sponsor a child.

My husband and I have been involved with PLAN USA for more than twenty years and currently sponsor two children. PLAN operates in 48 countries and their work is on the ground in those countries; it is child and community centered.
You do not have to sponsor a child to make a donation. You can sponsor a child in someone else's name or you can give a one-time gift. They have gifts of hope at all levels. Here are a few of them.
* Rehabilitate a preschool in Haiti for $20,000.
* Build a home for a teacher for $5,000.
* Build a girls-only latrine for $100.
* 3 baby chicks will cost you $15.
For $30 per month, or $360 for a year, you can sponsor a child in the name of someone else.
Why Join PLAN USA?
Donors Choose
A Squidoo Charity
Donors Choose is another great Squidoo charity that helps fund projects for classrooms in need.
This charity was chosen as one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2010. Give a gift card to someone that cares about education and let them choose the project. Or choose a project that you know would be close to the person's heart and donate in that person's name.
For example, one project I looked at was for a classroom at an urban L.A. school, where poverty is high. The teacher would like to use the Rosetta Stone Language Program to teach her students Chinese.
World Wildlife Fund
Adopt an Animal
World Wildlife Fund has been protecting and conserving nature for more than 45 years. According to their website, their mission is:
* protecting natural areas and wild populations of plants and animals, including endangered species;
* promoting sustainable approaches to the use of renewable natural resources; and
* promoting more efficient use of resources and energy and the maximum reduction of pollution.
They have a number of ways to give, while supporting WWF.
1. Buy a gift card for $50. The recipient will get:
* A soft plush version of their adoption animal
* A Species Spotlight card full of fascinating information about the animal
* A handsome 5"x7" adoption certificate, suitable for framing
* A beautiful 5"x7" full-color photo of their adoption animal
* A drawstring gift bag
* Bonuses! Including: adoption certificate, AIM icons, wallpaper and screen saver of their adopted animal
2. Adopt an animal, for example, a gray wolf. For $250 your gift recipient will receive a 32" plush animal, shown above, a framed photo and certificate.
3. Make a donation and the recipient can choose the animal.
4. Purchase apparel and gifts from their gift center.
KIVA
A Squidoo Charity
A truly unique gift would be a KIVA card. You can send a Kiva card by mail or email. With the amount you put on the card, the recipient can make a loan to help lift someone out of poverty.
Trees for Life International
Plant a tree.

Plant a tree in the name of someone you love.
Trees for Life International began planting fruit trees in India, but now they do so much more. They now plant trees in more than 12 countries and also invest in projects such as bee-keeping, water conservation, and energy efficiency.
3 Easy Steps
1. Select an item, such as trees, books, or computers.
2. Complete the payment.
3. Customize a printable card or e-card.
Global Giving
A Squidoo Charity
Like KIVA, Global Giving supports projects by people all over the world. By giving a Global Giving Gift Card, your recipient will be able to choose a project to support.
For example, one such project is "Empowering Guatemalan Children to Promote Literacy." For $10, you can provide art supplies for a reading activity with 10 kids. For $250, you can support a one-day reading festival for a community.
Which organization would you like to donate to?
Please share your thoughts.

- Salvation Army is the easiest to give to because they have bell ringers everywhere. I like your lens because you wrote about charities that we might not hear about otherwise.
Merry Christmas !

- The gift that keeps on giving! I like the Ark idea..sort of a pay it forward thing where everyone wins. I have been donating via the Squid Kiva team..donated to another charity, and what I always find out is the more I give, the more I receive :) Not necessarily materially....but so much more.

- Yes, many times. Let's face it, most of us have all the things that are essential to our health and wellbeing, the rest are just 'nice-to-haves'. I find it embarrassing when people swap unwanted and unnecessary gifts between each other. This is a far better idea to remember those who really do need some help, whether on 2 legs or 4.

- I might give a try to this kind of gift, as giving to charity in someone else's name is a nice way to get someone who has everything a gift. However, the way things work in my area, I'm not sure they'd appreciate to not receive something, lol. But the idea is great and I definitely would like to apply it! Will save me lots of headaches!

- No, but it sounds like a terrific idea. Giving a gift that continues to 'give' is a wonderful thing. Thank you for this suggestion. ~~Blessed by a SquidAngel~~
