Areas of Granada: Albayzín

In this area of Granada, the Arabic influence is visible everywhere. Full of art and craft shops, middle eastern restaurants, arabic teahouses, a medina of tiny cobblestoned streets and plazas with sculptures are tropical gardens. This area was where many of the more wealthy Moorish families lived. Even today their mark remains on this enchanting corner of the city.

Visitors will enjoy getting to know the Old Arab Baths, the Archaeological Museum of Granada and the Church of San Nicolas, all located in this neighborhood.

Areas of Granada: Sacromonte Hill

This area was a gypsy settlement that grew out of necessity when these people were expelled from the city under the Monarchists during the 15th Century. The people here fashioned homes by carving out the rock face into a series of underground caves, where some people still live today.

Retaining its artistic and colorful character from ancient times, this is the place to come to experience the art and cultural aspects of the gypsy's contribution to Spanish culture today- flamenco dance and guitar being a perfect example.

This is where you will find the Sacromonte Abbey and Museum, which are both worth visiting if you get the chance. Apart from the sights, this area is a great place for lunch or some tapas whilst you're out and about.

Areas of Granada: Realejo

This neighborhood is situated on the left side of the Darro River, underneath the Alhambra palace. This area was mostly populated by Jewish residents in the old days, until they were ousted from the city under the rule of Ferdinand and Isabel during the 15th Century.

Today, its full of pretty Andalucian style villas with whitewashed walls, inner courtyards and lush tropical gardens. There are also a lot of craft workshops in the area where you can watch local craftsmen at work as you wonder past. Here is the place to come if you're on the lookout for some great souvenirs such as guitars, embroidery and ceramics.

If you come to Realejo, make sure you visit the Church of San Cecilio, dedicated to the patron saint of Granada. This area really comes alive during the religious festivals held in Granada throughout the year, but it's still worth visiting outside these times.
