Festivals and Events in Valencia

The best time to visit.

Valencia is festival city as far as Spain is concerned! There are so many reasons to go to Valencia without them but we've narrowed the cream of the crop to those listed below to help you get the most out of your holiday.

Don't forget that accommodation in Valencia is sure to fill up quickly for the dates of special events, so don't miss out and book well in advance!

La Tomatina!

One of the worlds famous festivals is held right here in Valencia!

La Tomatina is one of Spain's most popular festivals, held at the end of August every year in a little town in Valencia region called Buñol. This town is about 40 kms from Valencia city and apart from being a very quaint and charming Spanish country town, it doesn't have a lot to offer tourists on a limited schedule. Normally most tourists will overlook it on their trip. The festival on the other hand draws crowds of tens of thousands: in 2007, the crowd was more then 40,000 people!

The festival's origins go back to the root of many traditional Spanish festivals- in honour of the towns patron saint, although it remains a bit of a mystery as to how tomato throwing became involved! in 2007 115 kilograms of tomatoes were hurled through the streets of Buñol during the hour long fight.

In preparation for the festival, residents put up big sheets of plastic to cover their homes and shop fronts. The cleanup involves fire trucks literally washing the walls and streets down. Some kind residents will even offer those covered in tomato a shower in the street with their garden hose!

This festival really has to be seen to be believed! If you want to find out more on La Tomatina, check out this lens dedicated to this fantastic festival: La Tomatina: The world's largest tomato fight

Beaches in and near Valencia

beaches aint beaches!

The Costa Blanca ("white coast") covers the gulf of Valencia, offering family friendly calm waters and clean white sand. If you're not in to swimming as such, you can still take a walk down to the Maritime Promenade to enjoy the view or a great seafood meal.

But if you have some extra time and the inclination, its worth venturing a little further out of the city to explore the coast. There are some pockets of practically undiscovered coast you can enjoy to yourself. Get away from the crowds and experience the Mediterranean sea at its best!

The best way to get around if you don't have a hire car is by taking a bus from the centre of town to the local surrounding beaches. The longer the journey, the less crowded it will be and with kilometres of coast to choose from, you're bound to find your own piece of paradise!

Malvarrosa Beach is the main city beach and there are lots of places you can rent equiptment for water sports, plus heaps of great restaurants to enjoy during the day. This area comes alive during the summer months with beach parties and festivals at night!

If you're after something a little more secluded try Patacona beach.

Two popular nude beaches are Pinedo and Devesa if you're that way inclined! When in Rome....or Valencia for that matter...do like the locals do!

Generally, most beaches are safe for swimming as the coastline is protected. Not all have and have good facilities and amenities so its worth asking a local or at you hotel for advice before setting off. During summer the main beaches are patrolled by the Red Cross lifeguards.

SAFETY FIRST!

The Spanish sun can be really strong so cover up with suncream and reapply after swimming. Watch out for jellyfish (they're called "medusas" by the locals). They're unlikely to kill you but they can deliver a painful sting! Finally, theft can be a real problem on the beaches anywhere in Spain. Don't take valuable with you and don't leave your backpack or bag unattended- even if it is empty!

The city or Arts and Sciences

A futuristic complex in the heart of Valencia city

The City of Arts and Science is an outstanding example of world class modern architecture. Its a must see and probably one of the most popular attractions in Valencia. The complex was designed and developed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava during the1990's but the design and engineering of this massive complex were well ahead of their time!

Entry to the complex itself is free and worth a visit even just to admire the architecture - each impressive structure is made from glass, white concrete, white mosaic tiles and enormous pools of turquoise blue water which reflect the light beautifully.

L'Hemispheric

A planetarium, IMAX cinema and laserarium in one. Learn about the planets or be entertained by the latest feature length IMAX releases.

The L'Oceanographic

This aquarium is the largest marine park in Europe and has more than 7,400 different species of marine life from all over the world from fish to penguins to white beluga whales. Great family entertainment.

L'Umbracle

A covered walkway of 320 meters in length and gardens complex of 7,000 squared meters with a sculpture garden. A great place to escape back to nature and relax in the sun. Free entry.

Palau de les Artes

A contemporary performing arts space with several auditoriums for music, dance and theatre performances.

Museu de les Ciences Principe Filipe
A science and technology museum with a range of permanent and temporary exhibitions. A popular place for kids and families.
