A Music Christmas Tree?

While living in San Marcos, TX I had the pleasure of knowing a professor of Music at what is now Texas State University. His instrument was piano, and both he and his wife had lovely singing voices. He invited my wife and me to attend a performance of the Austin Symphony Orchestra with him and his wife as their guests. After the concert we went to his home to socialize. Upon entering his living room I encountered one of the most beautifully decorated Christmas Trees I have ever seen. The festiive appearance, the balance of the decorations, and ornament placement were wonderful. But it wasn't until I had looked at the tree for several minutes that I realized that every single ornament was related to music! Instruments, musical notes and symbols, carolers, and musical ornaments were everywhere! It was at that point that I resolved to add more music ornaments to my own tree! Our tree is not nearly as musical as theirs, but you can now definitely tell that musicians and music lovers live in our home!

Where Did the Christmas Tree Come From?

We Love to Decorate the Tree--But Why Do We Even Have a Tree?

Certainly most Christian homes in the United States have a Christmas Tree. And in fact, the tree has become so secularized that it has even been said to not be religious in nature...thereby permitting its use in public places. But where did the Tradition of a Christmas Tree start?

The tradition of a Christmas Tree began in Germany almost 1,000 years ago. St. Boniface is said to have encountered a group of pagan people who were worshipping an Oak Tree. This paganism enraged Boniface, and he took an axe to the trunk of the oak...cutting the tree to the ground. To his amazement and that of the people who had angered Boniface, a young fir tree sprang from the roots of the oak. The fir had been seen as a symbol of the never ending faithfulness of Christ. This sign played a major part in the conversion of the area that is now Germany to Christianity.

In spite of this, it was not until the 16th century that fir trees were brought indoors during the Christmas Season.

Why Do We Decorate the Fir Tree?

The fir tree had long symbolized the faithfulness of Christ, His resurrection from the dead and return to life, and the certainty that in the same way life would return to the earth in the Spring.

People began bringing the fir tree into their homes, then began to further remind themselves of the return to life by decorating the tree with the fruits and nuts that the would soon bedeck the trees. Then people began to place other types of food on the tree along with shiny items which would reflect the light in the room...making the tree sparkle. In some cultures it became popular to actually place candles on the tree to allow the tree to have a light of its own.

People began to make decorations from paper and other materials around the house to add more color to the tree and make it more festive. Many of the decorations began to take on a more secular tone, while others remained somewhat religious in nature.

In the early 1800's Germany merchants began to manufacture and sell ornaments to families who wanted a more festive tree. In England Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria made Christmas trees fashionable by decorating the first English Christmas tree at Windsor castle with candles and a variety of sweets, fruits and gingerbread in 1841. This inspired the well-to-do in England to follow suit.

Americans were not quick to follow Europe regarding the Christmas Tree. Many believed it was a symbolic return to paganism. In fact, the first record of Christmas Trees in America was among German settlers in Pennsylvania.

Tastes evolved, and by the early 1890's trees were appearing in many American homes, with many ornaments being imported from Germany. But true to form, Americans did not completely follow the lead of their European cousins. Whereas the traditional European Christmas Tree was small (frequently 4 feet tall or smaller), Americans preferred a larger tree. It became fashionable for Americans to have trees that would reach their ceiling.

Make Your Own Ornaments

I like to have ornaments that are specific to things that we have done over the year. That way we can look at the tree each year and say, "That's the year we got the dog!" or "That's the year you started playing the violin!" or "Remember the year we went to Florida?"

It's a good idea with making your own ornaments, too!

You Didn't Think I'd Forget the Nutcracker, Did You?

Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker had its first performance December 6, 1892, in St. Petersburg. Based on the story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, by E.T.A. Hoffman, it is the story of a young girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a 7-headed Mouse King. The story is a perennial Christmas favorite. For more information about The Nutcracker, take a look at the www.ViolinStudent.com article.

Two Christmas Favorites Combined

The Nativity and a Jolly Old Elf

The sleigh was was all packed, the reindeer were fed,
But Santa still knelt by the side of his bed,
"Dear Father, " he prayed, "Be with me tonight.
There's much work to do and my schedule is tight.
My sack will hold toys to grant all kids' wishes.
The supply will be endless like the loaves and the fishes.
I can do all these things, Lord, only through You.
I just need your blessing, then it's easy to do.
I do this only to honor the birth of the One,
That was sent to redeem us, Your most Holy Son.
So to all of my friends, lest Your glory I rob,
Please, Lord, remind them who gave me this job."

Have You Ever Seen a Spider Ornament on A Tree and Wondered Why?

Here's the story, at least the way it was told to me

Long ago, German families allowed their animals to come inside and view the Christmas trees on Christmas Eve. The Christ Child was born in a stable, the families felt that since animals were there at the birth, they should be allowed to attend the celebration.

All except the spiders.

Spiders weren't allowed into the house because nobody wanted their webs all over everything.

The spiders were unhappy about this, so one year they complained to the Christ Child, who decided, one year, that he would allow them into the house to see the decorations. The spiders were filled with wonder as they entered the house, and went immediately to the tree...climbing up, then lowering themselves on their little silken strands of web. They didn't miss seeing a single ornament. They didn't miss visiting a single branch. And when it came time to leave they realized, to their horror, that then entire tree was covered with their webs.

On Christmas morning the families saw what the spiders had done. But instead of being angry, the people were delighted. During the night, after the spiders had left, the Christ Child had turned all of the webs into sparkling tinsel.

And to this day people decorate their trees with tinsel to remember the Christmas sparkle that the Christ Child gave the spider webs long ago, in Germany. And in many homes, especially in Europe, you'll find one or more tiny spider ornaments to commemorate the story.
