Holidays in Malta, Ideas and Tips to Get Your Best Holiday Ever!

I am a Dane and in the winter I escape to warmer places from our dark and cold weather.

In January 2007 I went to Malta - this lens tells a little about this wonderful place.

One of the surprises there was The Popeye Village - The Movie set is still there. We were also able to do a small cruise around the islands.

Enjoy!

Being on Holidays in Malta ...

... is like a fresh breeze.

Malta is a lovely island with sunshine all year around, good bays and warm clear waters. It is located in the Mediterranean, just south of Sicily.

The Maltese people are friendly and are fluently in their two official languages, Maltese and English. Their historical background is amazin - from the 5000 BC temples to Saint Paul - from the Crusanders to Nepoleon - and more recently WWII and to their new industry of wine making.

Another part of Greater Malta is the smaller island Gozo to the North West and is well worth a visit. Gozo is much greener than Malta.

Where is Malta?

Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean Sea (in its eastern basin), some 93 km south of the Italian island of Sicily across the Malta Channel; east of Tunisia and north of Libya in Africa.

Map created at http://www.planiglobe.com with permission

Only the three largest islands Malta Island (Malta), Gozo and Comino) are inhabited. The smaller islands, such as Filfla, Cominotto and the Islands of St. Paul are uninhabited. Numerous bays along the indented coastline of the islands provide good harbours. The landscape is characterised by low hills with terraced fields. The highest point is at Ta' Dmejrek on Malta Island at 253 metres (830 ft) near Dingli. Although there are some small rivers at times of high rainfall, there are no permanent rivers or lakes on Malta. However some watercourses are found randomly around the island that have fresh water running all year round. Such places are Barija, Imtaleb and San Martin. Running water in Gozo is found at Lunzjata Valley.

Contrary to popular belief, the south of Malta is not Europe's most southern point; that distinction belongs to the Greek island of Gavdos. It is even clear that the whole famous Greek island of Crete is more southern than any point of Malta.

Malta in Video

Spirit of Malta (overview of the island)

This video was filmed in Malta between 02.2005 to 08.2005 and edited in extreme rush in 2 hours (night before my plane back home for vacation, I made it specially to show Malta to my friends and parents back in Ukraine). The soundtrack is an "Everyday song" by "Winter Moods" (Maltese band, http://wintermoods.net). All filmed on an amateur Panasonic NV-28EN by me except 3 helicopter shots which I took from the stock footage in the studio I work for. PS. Following the arguments in the comments I calculated the amount of shots/locations that were done in Malta, Gozo and Comino and they are approximately Malta (60), Comino (20), Gozo (15). So it's Malta guys which features the most ;)

How Can I Get a Really Good Deal?

Internet Connections in Malta - Free WiFi Spots!

... and a bit about email accounts

I have been asked about Malta and the Internet I can tell there is nothing to be worried about, you will be able to check your email/Facebook/MySpace as well as "Twitter" ;-)

The major tourist and entertainment spots have Internet Cafés, some are just cafés with computers, others are computer centers with a bar serving snacks and drinks.

eMail addresses: If you have an email in your home country, it is most likely you can access it from Malta. Check with your Internet provider about how to login to their webmail - set up your account before you go to Malta and you are ready to check your eMails from Malta.

If you already have a Yahoo, Google, MSN or any other webbased account - you login to it as from home.

If you want a Maltese email account like malta.com, go to www.malta.com/free-account.html

You are in good (Internet) hands in Malta.

I lived in Malta on and off for 6 months over winter/spring a few years back (for work).
I have to agree with everything you've written here. The people are wonderful, it's one of the friendliest places I've been and the weather, spectacular. The best winter break away from England.
One thing to watch out for is the freak rainstorms. If it starts raining get inside quick, it doesn't last long but it buckets down while it does!
