Holly Day Shows you How to Make Any Day a Holiday

Holidays are an evergreen topic, they come back each and every year like clockwork and most of us love them with a passion. Who wouldn't want to enter the Halloween fun, what American wouldn't celebrate Thanksgiving, what Christian wouldn't celebrate Christmas and Easter, who on Earth wouldn't enjoy celebrating the New Year, which lover doesn't get his soul mate a nice gift on Valentine's Day, what Irishman wouldn't want to have a good time on Saint Patrick's Day... and this list is by no means exhaustive!

We all love holidays, but, how many times have you diligently looked for tips and tricks on how to throw a Halloween party, searched for the hottest Halloween costumes of the year, the best masks to wear on Carnival, the yummiest Christmas recipes to prepare? Sometimes, don't you just want to learn the history behind the celebration of a holly day?

This is why, in the beginning of the year 2010, Holly Day - Make Any Day a Holiday was born. Because I'm crazy about holly days and already own several holiday related websites, I just wanted to make this resource the best that I could and created Holly Day. Now, Holly Day is also home to Be My Valentine and Grateful Thanksgiving; very soon, Holly Day will be hosting Easter Bells as well. In addition, it links to My Happy Halloween and It's Christmas Time.

Shall we start? Allow me to introduce Holly Day - Make Any Day a Holiday.

Meet Holly Day Team

Holly Day's three co-authors introduction

Holly Day was also born from the gathering of three online pals, all are Giant Squids and retired Squid Angels, who enjoy to share their knowledge and passion for culture, fun and entertainment - with the world.

The team includes a graphic designer who created Holly Day's header and logo and occasionally writes for the site; a wonderful writer who focuses on the cultural part of the site. As for the third member, myself, she is crazy about and focuses on holiday how-to tips and tricks for entertainment.

Major Holidays of the Year

Let's sum up the "holly days" most of us celebrate

Depending upon the country in which we live, we celebrate different holidays. However, many of us have a handful of holidays in common. Out of those, many are celebrated by Christians and are an integral part of the Christian culture, including a few pagan holidays; which have been added to our traditions:

All countries celebrate the anniversary of their independence ; whether they call those days Independance Day or National Day, they all have a day set aside, for the celebration.

In addition to these standard holidays, people do celebrate their own very special days depending on their culture, traditions and religion. And those are holidays such as:

  • Flores de Mayo in Philippines
  • Groundhog Day in the USA and Canada
  • WWII Genocide Memorial Day in some European countries
  • Arrival of the First Missionaries in Polynesia
  • World Day of Prayer in Australia
  • Captain Regents Day in San Marino

and many more.

Several holidays other than those called "major holidays" are celebrated around the world.

While some are internationally observed, most are local or national holly days.

Let's have a look at some of them...

St David's Day

The Welsh National Day

St. David's Day Greeting Card, Card Saint David's cardUnless you were born in Wales, chances are that you've never heard of a Welsh holiday called "Saint David".

Saint David or Dewi Sant is the patron saint of Wales, just like Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. However, the holiday isn't known worldwide and only Welsh know what this holiday is about: is the holiday a bank holiday? Is Saint David's Day officially celebrated?

Welsh people do observe St David's Day with special celebrations. For example, local authorities plan parades, cultural events and concerts in many Welsh cities and towns. Schools ask children to come to school in the Welsh national costume and to bring a daffodil along with them.

Saint David's Day is celebrated on March 1st.

Talk Like a Pirate Day

Ahoy Matey! Come join the pirate fun!

Pink Skull Ultimate Party PackAnother special day in the year is the famous international Talk Like a Pirate Day; which started in 1995 as a joke between two Americans and occurs on September 19th.

While almost everyone knows what this day is about, many of us are clueless what to do to celebrate the day. Pirate related websites do exist: some tell you everything you need to know about pirate's life in the past centuries and/or where to find pirate related events ; others detail how did pirates talk or provide with a bunch of different pirate style food recipes.

However it is harder to find party ideas to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day if you don't want to go all out with the whole family and friends. So, at Holly Day, we created a collection of pages dedicated to the kind of Talk Like a Pirate Day parties you can throw; we added many recipes from the past as well as even ideas to create pirate themed cupcake recipes.

Make your Birthday a Holiday

Celebrate your day of birth with a blast!

4' Tabletop Tiki HutAnother example would be the one of your birthday. There's no reason to not celebrate your day of birth and if you can make the most of this day, it's even better!

Still wondering if you're going to organize a party or simply celebrate the day just the two of you, your partner and you?

Come by Holly Day and check as to whether we planned something to make the planning of a party easy and came up with some ideas you'd never think of. For example, what if your 30th birthday occurs in July? Well, plan a Luau birthday party for adults. At Holly Day, we provide you with tips and tricks on how to plan a Luau birthday party, select the best luau party sets but we also give you Luau birthday party recipe ideas along with some luau cupcake recipes to entertain and wow your guests.

As for your significant one, he/she might head to Holly Day and find which is your birthstone or the meaning of your day of birth so that he/she knows the kind of gift to get you on this so important day.

Turn Seasons into Holidays

Welcome springtime with new projects

Seasons can also be turned into holidays. Let's take the example of March 21st; which is the first day of springtime in Northern Hemisphere. Well, check the weather through the window...

Hm... not so nice, eh.

Sky is grey, rain is falling and it's quite cold outside. Is wintertime getting to its end?

Instead of getting back to bed, why don't you plan your future gardening tasks? After all, next week, it'll be time to plant those strawberry plants you've ordered from the plant nursery.

Another idea would be to start learning everything about container gardening, so that you can start decorate the patio.

Alternatively, you could design your new terrace or even create the plans for the new fountain you want to buy. This won't provide you with a picture in the newspapers, nobody will give you a day off but at least you would have enjoyed the day.
