Some of the best memories of growing up were holidays with grandma!

Holidays really didn't kick-off at our house until our grandparents arrived, especially grandma! What is it about grandmas anyway that they evoke such love and warm memories in their grandchildren's hearts.

I've written some about my grandma Julia Nagy as she has inspired me to be what I am today. Thank you grandma! I'm thinking of you now that the holiday season is here ... sadly it is now holidays without grandma.

Wish you were HERE!

Thanksgiving -- turkey, stuffing, cranberry dressing, pumpkin pie!

CoolFoto says:

Thanksgiving. We always went cross town to grandma's house for turkey dinner. My mother's brother and his 2 sons were there too.

stargazer00 says:

I'll have to go with the traditional turkey dinner. Lots of memories. I wouldn't mind trying the cabbage rolls another time!

Susan52 says:

Do I have to choose?? I'll say Thanksgiving simply because of a memory of sitting in the kitchen of my grandparents' old house with frost on the kitchen window. I've always thought that memory was from Thanksgiving; guess my memory smells turkey!

Christmas -- stuffed cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, ham, apple pie!

Nara says:

Christmas, I can remember the great food and love in the house. Always had fun helping ing Gandma cook.

csibesz says:

Turkey is for Thanksgiving only!

scss says:

Christmas! I still smell the cinnamon when making Christmas biscuits/cookies with her.

A grandma is a grand person!

The use of the prefix "grand-" dates from the early 13th century, from Anglo-French graund.

A Grandparent is a special person ...

Grandparents are the father or mother of a person's own father or mother. Everyone has a maximum of four genetic grandparents, eight genetic great-grandparents, sixteen genetic great-great-grandparents, etc. Sometimes these numbers are lower and in the case of having only two or three grandparents sibling or half-sibling incest would be incorporated.

In cases where the parents are unwilling or unable to provide adequate care for their children, in cases of death or other, grandparents often take on the role of primary caregivers. Even when this is not the case, grandparents often participate in the raising of children.

In traditional cultures, grandparents often had a direct and clear role in relation to the care and nurture of children.

One can also be a step-grandparent. A step-grandparent can be your parent's stepparent or your stepparent's parent. A stepparent's stepparent is called a step-step-grandparent, etc.

The various words for grandparents at times may also be used to refer to any elderly person, especially the terms gramps, granny, grandfather, grandmother and even more types that most families make up themselves.

Two individuals who have grandparents in common, but are not siblings, are called first cousins. The parents of a person's first cousins are his or her uncles and aunts.

When I think of holidays with grandma, I think of her in the kitchen ...

She was famous for her Hungarian cooking!

I can't seem to find it on your lens was your Grandma Julia Nagy your mother's mother or your father's mother?

In Scotland we have a street song that kids sing:

Oh, you canny shove your Granny aff a bus,
Oh, you canny shove your Granny aff a bus,
Oh, you canny shove your Granny for she's your mammy's mammy,
Oh, you canny shove your Granny aff a bus.

You can shove your other Granny aff a bus,
You can shove your other Granny aff a bus,
You can shove your other Granny, for she's your daddy's mammy,
You can shove your other Granny aff a bus.

Singing I will if you Will so will I,
Singing I will if you Will so will I,
Singing I will if you Will, Singing I Will if you Will, Singing I Will if you Will so Will I.

We have a great deal of respect for our mammy's mammy in Scotland.

As you can tell by the lyrics.

This special holidays with grandma lens is dedicated to ...

My grandma Julia Nagy

Dear Grandma ...

It's the holidays without you again ...

Dear Grandma,

Yes, it is once again the holidays without you. I've got your recipes for stuffed cabbage rolls, nut roll, poppy seed roll, butter horns, hungarian goulash, kifli, and kind of remember all your cooking tips. But, it's just NOT the same without you! Everything your cooked and baked always tasted better than my rendition.

I just wanted to thank you again for everything that you taught me and for all the love that you shared unconditionally. I didn't always tell you how much you meant to me; how much I truly respected and loved you. Grandma, I miss you. I'm doing my best each day to be a better person, and it is all because of you. Because of all that you taught us.

Thank you grandma for all that you did for us.

Sincerely,

Your loving grandchild.
