Thanksgiving Facts and Trivia
There's a lot of folklore and myth surrounding Thanksgiving.
If you need some dinner table conversation starters, here's some interesting facts and trivia related to Turkey Day.
The Origin of Thanksgiving
"...Thanksgiving in North America had originated from a mix of European and Native traditions.[1] Typically in Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks for a good harvest, to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community.[1] At the time, Native Americans had also celebrated the end of a harvest season.[1] When Europeans first arrived to the Americas, they brought with them their own harvest festival traditions from Europe, celebrating their safe voyage, peace and good harvest.[1] Though the origins of the holiday in both Canada and the United States are similar, Americans do not typically celebrate the contributions made in Newfoundland, while Canadians do not celebrate the contributions made in Plymouth, Massachusetts..." READ MORE
Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States and on the second Monday in October in Canada.
Here is why Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving:
"...Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l'Action de grĂ¢ce), occurring on the second Monday in October (since 1957), is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season.
On Thursday, January 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament proclaimed:
" A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed - to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October. "
Since 1971, Canadian Thanksgiving has coincided with the observance of Columbus Day in the United States..." READ MORE
Europeans mistakenly thought turkeys were a type of guineafowl (Numididae) that was also known as turkey fowl because they were imported through Turkey for European markets.
The first Thanksgiving holiday was declared in 1863, when during the Civil War, President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.
If you'd like to know more about why we eat the foods we do for Thanksgiving and why they probably were not eaten at the first Thanksgivings, here's an excellent summation of the main courses we've come to love and expect on the holiday table. READ MORE

Defusing Thanksgiving Controversies
Humor and neutral designs to take away the political edge.
Thanksgiving can be one of those most controversial holidays because it touches on so many issues. Vegetarians and Vegans are appalled by the focus on slaughtering so many animals for a feast celebrating over-indulgence. Those concerned with World Hunger are disgusted by the stuffing of humans when so many don't have enough to eat. And then there are those who think it's offensive to celebrate the theft of an entire country from its indigenous population by having a feast for the occupiers.
If this sounds like your nightmare scenario, here are some funny and neutral designs that will allow you to take part and still maintain enough integrity to enjoy a piece of pie for dessert.

Humor soothes the savage critic.
A smile can change a conversation's direction to a better place.
Here are some of my favorite examples from Zazzle Shopkeepers that use use humor to diffuse the Thanksgiving Day critics. It doesn't mock them for their integrity, but invites them to smile along with you. Click on the image to get taken to their shops where you can purchase your favorites.

Pagan and Winter Solstice Gifts
How to participate in Christmas with your own traditions.
The Origins of the Winter Solstice Celebration
"...In 46 BC, Julius Caesar in his Julian calendar established December 25 as the date of the winter solstice of Europe (Latin: Bruma). Since then, the difference between the calendar year (365.2500 days) and the tropical year (~365.2421897 days) moved the day associated with the actual astronomical solstice forward approximately three days every four centuries, arriving to December 12 during the 16th century. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII decided to restore the exact correspondence between seasons and civil year but, doing so, he did not make reference to the age of the Roman dictator, but to the Council of Nicea of 325, as the period of definition of major Christian feasts. So, the Pope annulled the 10-day error accumulated between the 16th and the 4th century, but not the 3-day one between the 4th AD and the 1st BC century. This change adjusted the calendar bringing the northern winter solstice to around December 22. Yearly, in the Gregorian calendar, the solstice still fluctuates a day or two but, in the long term, only about one day every 3000 years..." READ MORE

Every culture seems to have its own way of acknowledging the shift from Autumn into Winter and the welcome hope that from this day forward, the days increase and the light begins to return. Here are some of them from the same Wikipedia reference:
"...A[edit] Amaterasu celebration, Requiem of the Dead (7th century Japan)Main article: Amaterasu
In late 7th century Japan, festivities were held to celebrate the reemergence of Amaterasu or Amateras, the sun goddess of Japanese mythology, from her seclusion in a cave. Tricked by the other gods with a loud celebration and then she peeks out to look and finds the image of herself in a mirror and is convinced by the other gods to return, bringing sunlight back to the universe. Requiems for the dead were held and Manzai and Shishimai were performed throughout the night, awaiting the sunrise. Aspects of this tradition survive on New Years.[8]
[edit] B[edit] Beiwe Festival (SĂ¡mi of Northern Fennoscandia)See also: Beiwe
The Saami, indigenous people of Finland, Sweden and Norway, worship Beiwe, the sun-goddess of fertility and sanity. She travels through the sky in a structure made of reindeer bones with her daughter, Beiwe-Neia, to herald back the greenery on which the reindeer feed. On the winter solstice, her worshipers sacrifice white female animals, and thread the meat onto sticks which they bend into rings and tie with bright ribbons. They also cover their doorposts with butter so Beiwe can eat it and begin her journey once again.[9]
[edit] Brumalia (Roman Kingdom)Main article: Brumalia
Influenced by the Ancient Greek Lenaia festival, Brumalia was an ancient Roman solstice festival honoring Bacchus, generally held for a month and ending December 25. The festival included drinking and merriment. The name is derived from the Latin word bruma, meaning "shortest day" or "winter solstice". The festivities almost always occurred on the night of December 24.
[edit] C[edit] Chawmos (Kalash of Pakistan)In the ancient traditions of the Kalash people of Pakistan, during winter solstice, a demigod returns to collect prayers and deliver them to Dezao, the supreme being. "During this celebrations women and girls are purified by taking ritual baths. The men pour water over their heads while they hold up bread. Then the men and boys are purified with water and must not sit on chairs until evening when goat's blood is sprinkled on their faces. Following this purification, a great festival begins, with singing, dancing, bonfires, and feasting on goat tripe and other delicacies".[10]
[edit] Christmas, Natalis Domini (4th century Rome, 11th century England, Christian)
Folktale of Father Christmas riding a yule goat.Main article: Christmas
Christmas or Christ's Mass is one of the most popular Christian celebrations as well as one of the most globally recognized mid-winter celebrations in the Northern hemisphere. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, called the "Son of God," the second entity of the Holy Trinity, as well as "Savior of the World." The birth is observed on December 25, which was the Roman winter solstice upon establishment of the Julian Calendar.[11] See Christian Nativity. Universal activities include feasting, Midnight Masses and singing Christmas carols about the Nativity. Good deeds and gift giving in the tradition of St. Nicholas or Santa Claus is also observed. Many observe the holiday for twelve days leading up to the Epiphany..." READ THE COMPLETE LIST

This exquisite heirloom rose has an intoxicating scent that isn't found in modern hybrids. The petals are huge and retain their scent for potpourri and oils. I found it at a house built in 1905.
