Holland: Memorable Books about the Netherlands

I Grew up Fascinated by Books on Holland

Even if you've never been to Holland, your ideas about the Netherlands are probably formed by early exposure to classic books about the country. When I was little, I heard the story of the boy who saved everyone by putting his finger in the hole in a dike. Later I read Dog of Flanders (which I mistakenly thought was in Holland) and Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates. These books made a big impression on me. Since then I've always wanted to visit the Netherlands, but haven't yet made it there.

In the meantime, I read stories and non-fiction with a link to this lovely country with its canals and old cities. Here are some Dutch books for your enjoyment.

A Wonderful Illustrator - Peter Spier

I wish Peter Spier was around when I was little. It wasn't until I was a children's librarian that I discovered his illustrations. Such a delight; the lovely scenes of meadows and canals.

A Trailer for the Movie, Dog of Flanders, on YouTube

I always like to read the book before seeing the movie. Some people are the opposite, so if you want to sample the movie before the book, here it is.

If you read lots of this romance author, you'll think all Dutch doctors fall in love and marry English nurses. Readers enjoy these Harlequin Romances for their cozy feel. Her heroines are hard-working, earnest nurses who are sometimes beautiful and sometimes plain. They all start out at cross purposes with the Dutch doctor and eventually overcome their differences. Along the way, they overcome spiteful ex-girlfriends of the doctor or interfering family members. They usually rescue a child, a dog, or an old lady from a flooded canal, a car wreck or a rampaging bull.

With the formula romance you get delightful descriptions of Holland and the magnificent old houses. The author has a devoted following. My favorite of hers is Fate Is Remarkable.

WWII Dutch Memoir on Amazon

I've read a lot of books about WWII, so gravitated to this in the New England library several summers ago. It's a wonderful memoir, full of the little details and personal feelings that really tell the story. It surprised me to see that the author had moved from Holland after the war to New Hampshire.
The next summer I attended a writing workshop that she holds every year. What a priviledge!

I would love to visit Holland. Strictly speaking I have been there, but I don't regard a 4 hour stopover in Schipol airport as really visiting a country. I was fascinated too by the story of the boy who plugged the dike when I was little. Excellent lens.

Published in the early 1950s this is a novel of the survival of a group of children caught in the Dutch Floods of 1953. Is is a true story of survival. A fictional account this may be, but the research is great and the writing quite realistic. This is Hartog's third novel published in this country and is probably the best of the lot. It takes a few pages to get into the flow of the author's syntax but it is well worth the effort. This is one of those books that has been out of publication for awhile which is a pity as folks are missing quite a good read. (review by Top 100 Reviewer on Amazon)
