Although Holly Marie Combs had a number of minor roles in the late 1980s, including a brief speaking part in Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July, Combs' major acting debut arrived in the 1992 TV drama series Picket Fences. She auditioned for the role of Kimberly while she was in New York. The casting agent told her that she wasn't right for the part because, "She didn't have a big enough heart." Combs retorted, "If you're looking for someone with a big heart, what the hell are you doing in New York?" She was later called back and offered the job.[3] Picket Fences ran for four years, winning Combs critical acclaim and a Young Artist award.[1][2]
In 1992, Combs made her appearance in Simple Men, Chain of Desire, and Dr. Giggles, in which she plays its protagonist, the 19-year-old daughter of Cliff De Young's character and boyfriend of Glenn Quinn's character, Jennifer Campbell.
Combs was with her friend Shannen Doherty when Doherty was given the pilot script for Charmed. Doherty took Combs along to the audition when Combs said she wanted to take part in the audition. When they did, Combs auditioned for the role of Prue Halliwell and Doherty for Piper Halliwell, but they ended up switching roles. Alyssa Milano and Combs both became producers for Charmed in the fifth season.[5] For all eight seasons of Charmed (debuted in 1998 and was a hit TV series, which ended in May 2006), Combs played the second oldest of the three sisters. When the eldest, Doherty, left and Rose McGowan joined the cast, Combs played the eldest sister, even though she was the youngest of the four actresses.

"Forever Charmed"
After the death of their respective sisters, Piper and Billie go their separate ways, both determined to get their families back together.
What an excellent season to close out the series. The series finale was absolutely incredible, especially the ending, with the sisters writing down everything they had experienced in the last eight years (eight years for Piper and Phoebe, five years for Paige), where it then shows an elderly Piper reading their legacy to her young granddaughter, who is named PRUDENCE (after Prue). As an elderly Piper and an elderly Leo ascend the long staircase in the old Halliwell Manor, they pass many photographs taken of the Halliwell family, including Penny Halliwell (good ole Grams), Patty Halliwell, Paige, Leo, Piper, Phoebe, Wyatt, & Chris. This show was, in so many ways, very amazing, and I still find myself heartbroken that it is now all over. I do wish the entire cast (SHANNEN DOHERTY, HOLLY MARIE COMBS, ALYSSA MILANO, ROSE McGOWAN, BRIAN KRAUSE, & KALEY CUOCO) nothing but the very best in their careers.

Witches - A short Overview
There is a long tradition of witches, mostly they were looked at as evil and many innocent women have finished in the fire, only because some neighbour or an overzealous church man had accused them to be a witch.
For Holly Marie Combs this is fortunately not the case :-).

Witchcraft, in various historical, anthropological, religious and mythological contexts, is the use of certain kinds of supernatural or magical powers. Witchcraft can refer to the use of such powers in order to inflict harm or damage upon members of a community or their property. Other uses of the term distinguish between bad witchcraft and good witchcraft, the latter involving the use of these powers to heal someone from bad witchcraft. The concept of witchcraft is normally treated as a cultural ideology, a means of explaining human misfortune by blaming it either on a supernatural entity or a known person in the community.Pócs 1999, pp. 9?12. A witch (from Old English wicce f. / wicca m., also compare hag) is a practitioner of witchcraft.
Belief in witchcraft, and by consequence witch-hunts, are found in many cultures worldwide, today mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g. in the witch smellers in Bantu culture), and historically notably in Early Modern Europe of the 14th to 18th century, where witchcraft came to be seen as a vast diabolical conspiracy against Christianity, and accusations of witchcraft led to large-scale witch-hunts, especially in Germanic Europe."Witchcraft". Encyclopædia Britannica.
The "witch-cult hypothesis", a controversial theory that European witchcraft was a suppressed pagan religion, was popularised in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since the mid-20th century, Witchcraft has become the self-designation of a branch of neopaganism, especially in the Wicca tradition following Gerald Gardner, who claimed a religious tradition of Witchcraft with pre-Christian roots.Adler, Margot (1979) Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America Today. Piper Halliwell
The fictional character from the TV series "Charmed"
Piper Halliwell is a fictional character from the American television program, Charmed, and is a leading character featured during the series' run. The role is portrayed by Holly Marie Combs, as well as a few other actresses during different stages of the character's life. Piper begins the series as the middle sister, along with Prudence (Prue), her older sister, and Phoebe, the youngest. However, at the start of season four, Piper becomes the eldest of three sisters after Prue's death and the discovery of her half-sister, Paige Matthews. During the series Piper marries her whitelighter, Leo Wyatt, and becomes the mother of three
children, Wyatt, Chris and Melinda Halliwell. Her mother describes her as "the heart" of the Halliwell family, and she is considered to be the most famous character throughout the series' run. In 2008, AOL named her the third greatest witch in television history.
Holly Marie Combs appeared as Piper in every episode of Charmed, including the unaired pilot, making her the only cast member to have done so.
