Hollywood zealots? Hollywood Fanatics? Raving Fans?

What is your level of lust for the things of Hollywood?

Merriam-Webster online dictionary offers the following definitions:

  • Fan: an ardent admirer or enthusiast
  • Fanatic: marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion
  • Zealot: a zealous person...a red hot, true believer
In all fairness, zealot is a word normally reserved for those supporting various religious beliefs. The term was originally applied to Christian crusaders, I think. However, for some people, Hollywood and its by-products are almost a religion, and many of them will actually fight to protect their feelings about certain film and television stars and the actual movies themselves. Whole subcultures often form around particular movies! The entertainment industry often provides rich fodder for the youth subcultures.

I think it is not a real stretch to refer to some of these people as Hollywood zealots, Hollywood fanatics, or raving fans!

I'm a Fan - Sort Of

Not one of the raving fans; just an ordinary one

Hollywood Zealots Hollywood Fanatics Raving FansI say "sort of" because, normally, I'm not driven to watch, read, or buy anything just because it has a particular star or is part of a massive subculture.

Some people attract me more than others, such as Sandra Bullock. I also have a passing fancy for a few other stars such as Sharon Gless, Tommy Lee Jones, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer, Mark Harmon, Shemar Moore, and Patrick Stewart. I also love Rod McKuen and Rod Stewart, but I don't own every album they have ever recorded!

However, I will not:

  • run out to see every new movie in which they appear
  • watch a television program that I wouldn't otherwise watch just because they are guest-starring in it
  • buy a product just because they endorsed it
My friends and family are sometimes perplexed when they say things like, "Oh, I just love Sandra Bullock!" and I reply, "Yeah, I like her, too." Their response to that is often something like: "Did you see her in (insert name of previous movies here)?" When I respond negatively, there is usually a longer series of questions designed to determine just where I fit among the Hollywood zealots, Hollywood fanatics, and raving fans. They are often disappointed to find that my level of commitment to their star of choice is not as high as they think it should be.

I am certainly not one of the Hollywood fanatics!

Don't ask me how old Tommy Lee Jones is...

Hollywood Zealots Raving Fans Hollywood Fanatics...because I just don't care. I thought he was a great actor the first time I saw him, and I still think he is a great actor. I thought he was gorgeous to look at way back then; I think he's gorgeous now! Age is just a number (although sometimes written in a thicker font, with a few wrinkles).

I definitely do not qualify as one of the Hollywood fanatics! I am not a sponge who absorbs every detail of a star's life, and I could count on two hands (and maybe one foot if I think hard) the number of movies that I have ever watched more than once.

True Hollywood fanatics, on the other hand, can quite often quote the entire biography of a favorite star and are able to list every movie or television show in which they have ever appeared. They probably also know the names of the current spouse and children, former spouses and children, how many countries the stars have lived in, when they had their appendix removed, and so forth.

For their favorite movies, they can tell you the name of the producer, director, and stars (both major and minor). They can tell you where it was filmed, how many awards it has received and from whom, quote the critical reviews, and quote line for line from the script. They may have watched the movie a hundred or more times.

So, some clarification is in order here. I do not watch any of these movies for any reason other than the feeling the movie stirs somewhere deep within me, the fact that it employs really creative and original story lines or it has unbelievably beautiful special effects, such as in Avatar. I am one of the raving fans of the Jason Bourne character, but I really don't know anything at all about Matt Damon.

Hollywood Spawns Many Youth Subcultures

Hollywood Zealots Raving Fans Hollywood FanaticsThere exists so many true Hollywood zealots that entire subcultures, especially youth subcultures, have developed around some themes and/or particular movies.

What makes a subculture? Devotees (otherwise known as the zealots), of course. For example, many youth subcultures have grown up around vampires. Vampire movies have some required features: lots of blood-letting, dark clothing, fangs, crosses and stakes. However, not every vampire movie will create its own subculture.

Some do, such as the Twilight series, which has hundreds of thousands of people who will watch the movies repeatedly, buy a slew of posters and other merchandise, blog about them extensively, vote on them on innumerable forums, and so forth. Proponents of one character are often harshly outspoken towards supporters of the other. These people are the zealots who will often engage in fierce debates with other people.

Star Trek and Star Wars, of course, are also subcultures. Gatherings are held all over the world, where thousands of zealots gather to share. They wear character or theme-appropriate costumes and even participate in role-playing games that have one or the other of these subcultures at their centers. Although they started out as youth subcultures, they have inspired generations of raving fans, fanatics and, of course, the zealots.

And can anyone in his/her right mind deny that a whole youth subculture exists around Harry Potter? I won't even get started on that one. Just don't tell the zealot that there is no such place as Hogwart's. They are certain to classify you as a Muggle.

Yes, Virginia, the Hollywood zealots do exist.

Harry Potter - The Movies -"Through 2010, the first six books have been made into films by Warner Brothers; it is the highest grossing film series of all time so far. The seventh book is being made into two movies which are currently scheduled to be released nearly eight months apart: Part I on November 19, 2010 and the series finale on July 15, 2011...The series also originated much tie-in merchandise, making the Harry Potter brand worth £15 billion." (Don't know what that is in USD, but it's a lot of money in any language!)

Twilight Series - The Books - "As of March 2010, the series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide with translations into at least 38 different languages around the globe. The four Twilight books have consecutively set records as the biggest selling novels of 2008 on the USA Today Best-Selling Books list and have spent over 235 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list for Children's Series Books."

Twilight Series - The Movies - This story is yet untold with the 3rd installment just recently released. It is probable that it will not achieve quite the same box-office success as Harry Potter, but it is still a goldmine!

I won't go into the whole Star Trek and Star Wars thing, but it is clear to anyone watching that the Hollywood zealots and the youth subcultures do indeed boost commerce and, therefore, are very good for the economy on a world-wide basis!

The Future of Hollywood

I have to admit that I truly believe Hollywood has had some very negative effects in the shaping of morals and values. However, it has also opened the doors to a world of powerful imagination, stunning imagery, fabulous music, fun people, great philosophies, heart-stopping action, and even faith-building sagas.

Hollywood, indeed, would cease to exist if it relied on lukewarm followers such as me. So, to all of you fans, fanatics, and the true Hollywood zealots: Thank you for keeping Hollywood alive for the rest of us to enjoy along with you.

"While You Were Sleeping" I was busy writing. Needing a break, after slipping around my "Tombstone", I went into the kitchen for a cup of... red liquid. (Oh, come on! Of course it was tomato juice! What did you expect?)

Now, the Muggles with whom I live are awake, and I have to take the USS Enterprise off to where "no man has gone before" so I can concentrate.
