A quick explanation of the stars. If you recommend all of these movies, John, how come you rate them?
Answer: It's my personal rating system.

3 stars - Great movie! Something you should see!
4 stars - Great movie! Something that you might fall in love with and watch again.
4.5 stars - Amazing Movie! You'll watch this again and again. (I did, at least)

Mission: Imposible - Ghost Protocol

3 Stars

Who doesn't like watching Tom Cruise run? It's epic. Also he actually screams "mission accomplished" in this movie. If your looking for a night of cheap thrills with a passable plot - just some good ol' Hollywood entertainment, than this is the movie for you!

I think the rating, "PG-13," actually fits for this movie. There is some intense action/violence, but very little of the sexuality that usually comes along with a movie like this.

MoneyBall (2011)

4 Stars

When a movie is based on a true story, it makes the moments all the more sweet. A movie about the underdog A's and the coach who redefined how baseball teams are managed. Once and a while we need to be reminded of America's love affair with baseball and this movie brings back those sweet memories vividly.

A great movie for the whole family! Especially for those who love America's defining pastime.

Battlestar Galactica (2004 - 2009)

New Pick - Epic, Classic Television

4.5 Stars

An inventive reimagining of the 1978 series of the same title, Battlestar never ceases to amaze. Weaving epic themes through equally layered narratives makes it one of the best examples of complex television in history. The series started as a miniseries (which functioned as a back door pilot) that introduces the plight of the "12 colonies" who have created machines, named the "Cylons." The Cylons became self-aware and starting rebelling against their masters, a war was fought. A treaty was declared. No one has heard from the Cylons in many years, but they are about to return. If you like science fiction you will love Battlestar.

There is quite a bit of sexual content and violence in this series. My conservative judgment is that this series would be appropriate for people of ages 16+ Tag-line: "So say we all!"

The Illusionist (2006)

Archive - Candy For The Mind

4 Stars

The Illusionist whisks you off your feet and beckons you to a nostalgic world of passion, mystery, and illusion. This film has a little bit of everything: love, magic, murder, mystery, and it never ceases to amaze. The magician, Eisenheim, played by Edward Norton, casts a spell of enchantment on the viewer with his calm demeanor and repertoire of astonishing tricks. It seems that he can even summon spirits from the other side, but this may not be the movies greatest illusion.

Appropriate and recommended for 13+ everyone will enjoy this!

The Great Escape (1963)

Archive - Classic Film

4 Stars

Released in 1963 'The Great Escape' is THE prison escape movie. Set in Nazi germany it documents the attempted escape of 250 Allied soldiers from a new Nazi POW compound. A great break from new, overdone hollywood sensationalism, the great escape is a classic film in the history of movies.

Appropriate for all ages: Some violence, strife. I'd recommend for children 10+
Staring Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. Tag-line: "put a fence in front of these men...and they'll climb it"

Disney's Bolt (2008)

Archive - Fun for the Family

3 Stars

Bolt is a 'cute' film that the entire family will enjoy. Of course, it contains the basic Disney storyline functions, something with a good moral, but it also continues in the pattern of new, witty, and just plain entertaining animated comedies. About a star dog of an action TV series who actually believes he has the superpowers he uses in the show. When Bolt gets lost, it will take a journey of self-discovery to bring him back to his child-star owner, Penny, Bolt's "person".

Appropriate for the entire family: It's a Disney Movie! Featuring the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus

Unbreakable (2000)

Archive - M. Night Shyamalan's Last Stand

3 Stars

Ever since the 6th sense M. Night Shyamalan has been on a slippery slope when it comes to quality movies. Signs, The village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening have all left moviegoers with the sullen disappointment of faulty expectations. However, before his seemingly endless plummet to the depths of failed art, Shyamalan managed to pop off one more gem, if not a slightly imperfect one. 'Unbreakable' documents the birth of the textbook hero (Bruce Willis) and his probable arch nemesis (Samuel L. Jackson) in a mind-bending and satisfyingly mysterious way. Complete with a few plot twits and the standard Shyamalan strangeness this film is worth considering.

Appropriate for 13+ - Especially recommended for comic book lovers!

Bottle Shock (2008)

Archive - Some Good Old Inspiration

3.5 Stars

When a movie is based on a true story, it makes the moments all the more sweet. "Bottle Shock" documents the early days of Californian wine-making (1976) in a witty and entertaining way. Alan Rickman plays a snobby sommelier in France who searches for the best Californian wines to pit against the French greats in what is now infamously known as the "Judgment of Paris." Great for wine savants, Californians, and anyone who loves a good triumph over the french, this movie will make you proud.

Appropriate for all! - Some sexuality briefly mentioned, but nothing shown. The interest group on this one is probably the slightly more aged folk.

Some movies you might want to stay away from.

  • Last House on the Left (Just disgusting, not a horror film at all)
  • 1984 (It was a good book, but not a great movie)
