"I'm broke and need to make some fast money."

or

"I want to start a home based business but I don't want to spend any money on it until I'm making money from it or I don't want to spend much time getting it established."

With this type of mindset you are sure to set yourself up for a lot of frustration and failure. It takes time to market and promote a new business.

Before you start your business, research the market and make sure there is a demand for your product or service. Don't fall into the trap where you think your hobby that you love would make an excellent business and think everybody else is going to love it too. Make sure that your business idea is economically viable.

Write a business plan. Having a business plan will help you stay focused on your objectives. It is very easy to get distracted from your main objectives if you have not clearly identified them. There is nothing magic about putting the words "home based" in front of the word "business." Whether you are working from home or a brick-and-mortar business, it is still a business and needs to be treated as such.
