home energy conservation tip #10 -- Get with the Program
Energy Efficient Thermostats Save You Money
Why pay for heat or AC you don't need? You can save energy and money by using a programable thermostat. It can reduce your energy needs from heat or AC when you are at work, away at vacation, or asleep.

Hunter 44550 Auto Save 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

"This is not a particularly expensive thermostat, but it might as well be because you get a lot more than you pay for. It was so easy to install that my not-particularly-handy husband was able to do it (he DID have to read the directions, but he did NOT have to ask for help). It works really well, we love the indigo glow, and the program is really easy to use and really convenient for people who don't work the standard 9-5 M-F that some thermostats limit their programs to. The energy-saver programs are also really nice. All in all, I think this was a great buy."

- I did not know about the paint color affecting your energy useage, though it does make sense. Another little tip that i have always liked is to not keep your electronics charging for longer than they need, just get the battery full and disconnect them.

- I found your article really useful. You say to avoid using the dishwasher, but have you ever tried solar cooking? I was looking around on this one experts site and found this article entitle Solar Cooking 101 here http://www.experts123.com/a/solar-cooking-101.html. I know those clunky appliances take up a lot of energy (and not to mention money).

- I agree that colors both inside and out can reduce energy use. In warmer climates, light colors prevent a home from attracting solar heat.

- Thanks for the great tips. I never thought about painting my interior a different color. Another easy tip is turn off the "heated dry" option on your dish washer. It uses up a lot of energy and gives off unwanted heat in the summer.
