A Song that Helps You Cope with the Holidays When You're Far Apart

The classic song, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," is a song about longing to be home with the ones that you love. Listening to this beautiful melody and lyrics is one way of being home for a bit even when you're far apart...if only in your dreams.

This lens also includes some resources for coping with the holidays for those who are apart from loved ones.

Josh Groban's I'll Be Home for Christmas

When I first listened to the new Josh Groban Holiday album, "Noel" I was moved to tears when his new version of the classic Bing Crosby song, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" first played and nearly every time since.

Josh's version features voice clips of men, women and the families of those serving in our Armed forces sharing their wishes for this holiday season, since they will not be home with their loved ones.

It is a very appropriate version for this holiday season a beautiful wish of hope--for being home for Christmas.

I'll Be Home for Christmas from Wikipedia

"I'll Be Home for Christmas" is a Christmas song, written by Walter Kent.

In 1943, this song joined "White Christmas" to become one of America's most popular holiday songs. The recording by Bing Crosby shot to the top ten of the record charts that year and became a holiday musical tradition in the United States.

A song titled "I'll Be Home for Christmas" was also copyrighted on August 24, 1943, by Kent (music) and James "Kim" Gannon (words). The two revised and re-copyrighted their song on September 27, 1943, and it was this version that was made famous by Crosby. The label on Crosby's recording credits "I'll Be Home for Christmas" to Kent, Gannon, and Ram. Later recordings usually credit only Kent and Gannon. The discrepancy arose from the fact that on December 21, 1942 Buck Ram copyrighted a song titled "I'll Be Home for Christmas (Tho' Just in Memory)" although, it should be noted, that version bore little or no resemblance, other than its title, to the Crosby recording.

Christmas a Time to Cherish Peace and Good Will

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind.
To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy,
is to have the real spirit of Christmas.

Ways of Coping When You're Apart at the Holidays

These are some of the suggestions for coping with the holidays when you're apart from the ones you love.

One of the ways of helping is to focus on the spirit of the season and finding ways of spreading good will towards men by reaching out to help others.
  1. Volunteer for non-profit organizations or visit a nursing home.
  2. Donate time or money a homeless, battered-women or animal shelter.
  3. Bring some holiday cheer into work (if allowed).
  4. Send personalized holiday cards to friends, family and colleagues. In this era of e-mail, people still enjoy receiving "real" letters. You might get one in return and not have to face an empty mailbox.
  5. Knit, sew or crochet blankets or hats for the homeless, children or animals.
  6. Enjoy free activities: Look at holiday decorations. Window shop.
  7. Attend a religious service.
  8. Listen to free holiday concerts.
  9. Enjoy Christmas carolers. Join in the singing.
  10. Celebrate the holidays with family at a different time, when you are able to get away.

Coping at Work When You're Apart at the Holidays

I spent most of my years in medical training apart from my immediate family.

My final year of training I decided if I couldn't be home for Christmas then I would create a family, connect with friends and spread some holiday spirit.

These are some suggestions for coping when you're apart at the holidays.
  1. Call friends, family or colleagues who are also alone for the holidays, or otherwise home-bound.
  2. Adopt a Soldier Angel and contributing to their Holidays for Heroes.
  3. Organize a gift exchange, "Secret Santa" or "Angel Buddies" for those working on the holidays. Decide on a monetary gift limit. Draw names and pick a time for the exchange or revealing "Santa" or the "Buddies."
  4. Bring the holidays to work. Decorate your work area with lights, a Christmas tree or Menorah.
  5. Share holiday traditions. Bake favorite bread and cookies for friends and "family" in the hospital or the community.
  6. Volunteering to take call for those "who have a life." You can view this as a good deed and can make the call day more bearable.
  7. Leave candy canes or Christmas roses in your colleague's mail boxes.
  8. Realize that being in the hospital over the holidays you are caring for others who are dying, ill or injured that need your care.
  9. Remember your patients are spending their holidays in the hospital away from their loved ones.
  10. Realize that being in a military zone, watching out for peace and being away from loved ones is a small sacrifice to provide freedom for those at home.

Benefits Soldiers Angels and Operation Helmet

This lens was originally created on Veteran's Day 2007 to benefit the Soldiers Angels. The lens was created in memory of all who have served and those who are still serving whom we'd like to see home for Christmas.

In addition this lens now also benefits Project Help on Squidoo, a lensraiser for Operation Helmet.
