For years I have been growing my own fruits and vegetable in my garden at home. I started to think about ways that I could optimize my garden for better, healthier, more vigorous plants by adding a greenhouse.

Home Grown Greenhouses

There are many different types of greenhouses to choose from. Depending on your needs, chose light weight structures that can be made out of fiberglass, vinyl, or aluminum. These are good for easy construction and less weight for shipping of your greenhouse. Fiberglass and vinyl are a good cheap way to have the greenhouse that you always wanted. Aluminum creates a very strong structure yet will be light weight and easy to work with. There are also beautiful greenhouses made out of wood. They mostly come in durable redwood and cedar, are very strong, and come in two different designs, an apex or dome shaped roof. There are also Lean To greenhouses that go up against the side of your house or garage and are very popular with homeowners. These can be great because they are very space efficient. Once you decide on what to build your greenhouse out of and what design best suits your needs then you need to pick a siding material.

The two main materials that you can use for the walls are glass or polycarbonate. Glass has almost gone by the way side because of how heavy and fragile it is. Polycarbonate comes in many thicknesses and is very light weight. The thinner polycarbonates can be rolled and stored if need be. It's also is a lot less likely to break if hit by that home run ball during batting practice.

Picking Your Greenhouse

The first thing I tried was building one from scratch. I went to my local gardening store and looked at plans that I could buy. I knew right away that this would not be the way to go for me. For an experienced builder though, it might look like a piece of cake. But, for my mediocre construction knowledge I decided to look for an easier way.

I started looking at kits. Put piece #1 into piece #2 seemed more my style. They had kits for sale there at the gardening store but they all seemed like they were unsatisfactory. Most of them were overpriced, and looked like they would blow away if a good wind came whipping through. I got on the internet and started to look for greenhouse kits that can be ordered. I found a lot of interesting things about greenhouses on the internet that I never knew before.

I came across the history of greenhouses and learned that the idea of growing plants in environmentally controlled areas has existed since Roman times. The first modern greenhouses were built in Italy in the thirteenth century. They used them to house exotic plants brought back from the tropics. Not long after that, the concept spread to the rest of Europe and the technique was perfected. After doing a lot of looking around the internet, I came across many sites that helped me with my research.

The internet offers everything I was looking for, without having to drive around wasting time and gas. All greenhouses that are manufactured are sold on the internet and some of the best prices are found there too. There are greenhouse buyers guides that help you compare and narrow down which greenhouse would best suit your needs.

If you search through blogs you are able to gain a lot of useful information as well. I was able to hear from people that had experience growing plants in greenhouses, so I was able to find the perfect greenhouse that I always dreamed about. I wanted to be able to grow year around, so I looked into getting a heater for my greenhouse. Some sites will even show you how to calculate how many BTU's I would need to heat the greenhouse, so I could make the right decision on what heater to buy for it.

Assembling a Greenhouse Kit

The best part about ordering a greenhouse online is that it is delivered directly to you. You don't have to figure out how to get it home from the store. When I got the kit in the mail I was amazed by how well it was put together. Everything was easy to work with and even easier to understand. Most of the assembly was already done for me. All I had to do was piece it together and it was finished. I was shocked to get it finished before the day was over. I was able to put the fruits and vegetables that I had in their new star lit bedroom. There was no running back and forth to the hardware store because I got the wrong screws and latches. No running back to the lumber yard to get another piece of wood because I cut it ¼ inch to short. Just sit back and think of all the different veggies you are going to get at the gardening store tomorrow.

Start Growing!

Now that I bought and put together my greenhouse kit, I can grow all the veggies, fruits, and flowers that I always wanted to. With my new greenhouse I can start my seeds over a month earlier than I could before, giving me the ability to get an extra harvest out of my vegetable and fruit growing. Not only can I start earlier. I can grow a lot longer into the fall, without having to worry about frost or animals bulking up for the winter.

When it comes time to harvest your first tomato, you will not believe the difference between the hot house tomatoes and the tomatoes grown on your porch for years. Absolutely phenomenal! Along with the extended growing season, I can now grow things that otherwise would not survive where I live. I am able to keep it a steady 76 degrees in my greenhouse, day and night, enabling me to grow exotic plants and flowers that I never would have dreamed of growing myself. Now that I have my perfect greenhouse I am able to save money at the grocery store, enjoy my favorite hobby, and impress friends with my incredible fruits, veggies, and flowers. It was a great addition to my house, adding value to my property, and my life.
