Real Women Love Power Tools

Home Improvement - It's all about the Power... Tools
Real women want power... tools, that is. And we're not talking the wimpy stuff. When it comes to home improvement, we have BIG PLANS and we need the right equipment for the job.
So, if you're out there and you're listening, let me give you a piece of advice: Think outside the jewelry box. Delight the woman in your life with a gift that says I see your inner power and here's a gift to help you unleash it.
Step back now. I'm about to let 'er rip. You might want to put on those safety goggles.
A Woman Has Needs

And who are we? In our heart of hearts, we are DIY goddesses. Surprised? Well, we don't go around bragging about it. The truth is we eat, sleep, and breathe home improvement. Give us HGTV or give us death by outdated decor, tile, fixtures, flooring, and kitchen cabinets.

A Girl Has Dreams
She dreams of a beautiful home with a white picket fence. She dreams of building that amazing new fence!
It's all about building a life together, but what if you are lacking the tools? What's a girl to do?
Got tools?
I received my first tool gift when I was three years old. A carpenter who was building a family room in our home gave me a real hammer. We're not talking plastic Fisher-Price toy here. Apparently, I was quite mesmerized with all of the construction activity. I'm pretty sure that is when the DIY seeds were planted in my life. How I loved that hammer! And, that early encouragement is still paying huge dividends. Just goes to show how the right gift at the right time can make a big impact.

I'd say a combination. I would rather work together to complete a project and then share a glass of wine by a roaring fire to admire the work.

Most of the plumbing is in, so now it's time to hook up the faucet and my new hammered copper sink. I'm finally seeing the finish line and really looking forward to enjoying the fruits of my labor.

Ongoing Improvements
Exterior Construction - May
The cabin deck and steps were in bad shape so I just installed all new decking, stairs, and railings. I also got inspired to make some rustic cedar shutters and a couple of simple flower boxes. This weekend I'm installing new windows in the main living area of the cabin. Let's hope for no precipitation while this project is ongoing.
New Deck

I used cedar fencing boards and a jigsaw to create the chalet style inserts for my new porch railing.
This Was a Real Pain in the Neck Project
June
I have been up in the rafters all week. Have you ever taken on a project and gotten in over your head... literally? This has been a huge project. My cabin had an unfinished ceiling when I bought this property. The roof is supported from the inside by aspen logs of various dimensions. To finish the ceiling meant placing wood spacers alongside the logs, installing insulation, and then scribing each individual pine tongue and groove plank. Then, there is the staining and installation of those scribed ceiling panels. So far, in just the main area of the cabin, I have fitted over 400 pieces of wood into place.
My sore neck will be very happy when I have completed this massive DIY project. Though it has been a challenging endeavor — more difficult than I anticipated — I am pleased with the total transformation brought about by finishing the ceiling in this manner. My essential equipment for this undertaking was my air compressor, brad nailer, and miter saw. Other essentials? Be sure to stock up on Bengay ointment!
Aspen and Pine Ceiling

This is how a finished section of ceiling looks once the pine planks are installed between the aspen beams. The scribing and fitting is the main challenge. It is necessary to fit around each little bump and twist of the logs (and there are many). I chose a gel stain in Chestnut finish to create a contrast color to the golden hue of the aspen. The Chestnut color is a close match to the Hickory finish of the flooring I am installing next week.
I had planned to use the smooth side of the pine tongue and groove planks for the ceiling, but ended up using the rough side of the wood. The rough side was in keeping with the rustic nature of my cabin and property and it absorbed the stain better. I like the warmth and texture.

- What you did to that ceiling is amazing and very unique, it makes me want to be really nosey and see what the rest of the house looks like, I have never taken on anything like that, most of the things that I do are dressing up junk that I get at garage sales and salvage yards, and making something useful with it. I loved this lens

- Okay, now I need to go out and clean up the back porch, wood shop and barn. I am ready to create a space where we can really do some projects. I would like to create a workspace where all the power tools are handy, with work benches and power. Sounds like a new lens might be in the works as well. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

- Your Lens is so empowering! Yes we can do it ourselves and yes we can handle tools too. We manage our Family and home, and tools seems a lot easier and less complicated than those two because at least they come with manuals. GREAT LENS!
