Real Women Love Power Tools

Home Improvement - It's all about the Power... Tools

When's the last time you gave a woman a real gift? I'm not talking diamonds here. Well, perhaps a diamond drill bit would be great for starters.

Real women want power... tools, that is. And we're not talking the wimpy stuff. When it comes to home improvement, we have BIG PLANS and we need the right equipment for the job.

So, if you're out there and you're listening, let me give you a piece of advice: Think outside the jewelry box. Delight the woman in your life with a gift that says I see your inner power and here's a gift to help you unleash it.

Step back now. I'm about to let 'er rip. You might want to put on those safety goggles.

A Woman Has Needs

If you read the popular psychology literature, you know that a woman has needs. We need to talk about things. We need to know what you are thinking. We need you to better understand us. And, the key to understanding, is for you to realize that we don't want more foo foo girly gifts. We need you to respect us for who we really are.

And who are we? In our heart of hearts, we are DIY goddesses. Surprised? Well, we don't go around bragging about it. The truth is we eat, sleep, and breathe home improvement. Give us HGTV or give us death by outdated decor, tile, fixtures, flooring, and kitchen cabinets.

A Girl Has Dreams

Home Improvement Power Tools Build White Picket FenceA girl has dreams. She dreams of being loved and cherished. She dreams of raising a family.

She dreams of a beautiful home with a white picket fence. She dreams of building that amazing new fence!

It's all about building a life together, but what if you are lacking the tools? What's a girl to do?

Got tools?

I received my first tool gift when I was three years old. A carpenter who was building a family room in our home gave me a real hammer. We're not talking plastic Fisher-Price toy here. Apparently, I was quite mesmerized with all of the construction activity. I'm pretty sure that is when the DIY seeds were planted in my life. How I loved that hammer! And, that early encouragement is still paying huge dividends. Just goes to show how the right gift at the right time can make a big impact.

In my family both the girls are the people with the power tools, and my brother who is not interested in DIY projects gets us to do it for him

I'm a mechanical engineer and my husband is a mechanic. Most couples fight over money or chores. We fight over how hydraulics work.

A woman's place is ANYWHERE she wants to be, whether it is in the toolshed or the kitchen!

A woman's place is making a honey-do list and supervising the work.

Evelyn_Saenz says:

I'd say a combination. I would rather work together to complete a project and then share a glass of wine by a roaring fire to admire the work.

Helene-Malmsio says:

Life was much easier when I was married to a real handyman -- lol! "Honey, can I have a new bathroom please" ---- oh those were the days!

The Amazing Router

I did not realize everything that could be done with a router until I started reading these books. Quite an amazing tool! This is an excellent guide for learning how to turn out beautiful wood creations. I'm currently using the router to make kitchen cabinet doors. It will also be great for all of the picture frames that I build for my artwork.

This DIY Goddess's Projects

Interior Renovations - April

Home Improvement Cedar Tongue and GrooveI have dozens of ongoing DIY projects. This week I'm finishing a big bathroom project. I'm done with the framing, drywall, painting, flooring, and cabinet construction. I've built the cabinet doors and need to construct a countertop. The feature wall I installed is constructed of cedar tongue and groove planks. Nice look for a mountain home.

Most of the plumbing is in, so now it's time to hook up the faucet and my new hammered copper sink. I'm finally seeing the finish line and really looking forward to enjoying the fruits of my labor.

Have you taken on a big renovation project?

My New Hammered Copper Sink

I purchased this copper sink on ebay and just love it! My faucet for the vessel sink is the Price Pfister in Tuscan Bronze. The finish really matches well with the copper and the style fits nicely with my decor.

Ongoing Improvements

Exterior Construction - May

Flower Box Home Improvement ProjectThough the weather has been quite fickle this month, I haven't let a little snow and sleet stop any of my DIY projects. I've been able to complete most of the major outdoor renovations on my mountain cabin. I stripped all of the weathered siding off of the exterior and replaced the insulation, boards, and battens. It's finally warm enough for staining and adding the new trim. Next up is a roofing repair project and construction of an addition that will be used as a workshop and storage area.

The cabin deck and steps were in bad shape so I just installed all new decking, stairs, and railings. I also got inspired to make some rustic cedar shutters and a couple of simple flower boxes. This weekend I'm installing new windows in the main living area of the cabin. Let's hope for no precipitation while this project is ongoing.

New Deck

I used cedar fencing boards and a jigsaw to create the chalet style inserts for my new porch railing.

This Was a Real Pain in the Neck Project

June

Cabin Ceiling Project - Spacers and InsulationI have been up in the rafters all week. Have you ever taken on a project and gotten in over your head... literally?

This has been a huge project. My cabin had an unfinished ceiling when I bought this property. The roof is supported from the inside by aspen logs of various dimensions. To finish the ceiling meant placing wood spacers alongside the logs, installing insulation, and then scribing each individual pine tongue and groove plank. Then, there is the staining and installation of those scribed ceiling panels. So far, in just the main area of the cabin, I have fitted over 400 pieces of wood into place.

My sore neck will be very happy when I have completed this massive DIY project. Though it has been a challenging endeavor — more difficult than I anticipated — I am pleased with the total transformation brought about by finishing the ceiling in this manner. My essential equipment for this undertaking was my air compressor, brad nailer, and miter saw. Other essentials? Be sure to stock up on Bengay ointment!

Aspen and Pine Ceiling

This is how a finished section of ceiling looks once the pine planks are installed between the aspen beams. The scribing and fitting is the main challenge. It is necessary to fit around each little bump and twist of the logs (and there are many). I chose a gel stain in Chestnut finish to create a contrast color to the golden hue of the aspen. The Chestnut color is a close match to the Hickory finish of the flooring I am installing next week.

I had planned to use the smooth side of the pine tongue and groove planks for the ceiling, but ended up using the rough side of the wood. The rough side was in keeping with the rustic nature of my cabin and property and it absorbed the stain better. I like the warmth and texture.
