Home Invasion.
Home invasion is a wicked crime.
Those that set out to invade a home do so wanting confrontation with the occupants. Where there is confrontation between criminals and victims, there is always a possibility, even a probability, of violence.
Whereas the average burglar will select homes to break in to that look unoccupied, home invaders look for homes in which the residents appear to be in. This is the reason that home invasions (aka hot burglaries,) mostly happen in the evening, at night or at the weekend.
So why do these criminals target occupied homes? There are many reasons but often it is because they can use terror or violence to force homeowners to reveal the whereabouts of valuables, the combination of the home safe, credit card pin numbers etc.
These cowardly criminals often target the weak and vulnerable, but of course they can single any home out for attack.
Home invaders are dangerous individuals because they seek out confrontation instead of seeking to avoid it.
Home Invasion Prevention.
It is more likely though that the home invaders will use some sort of deception to fool you into opening up your door. Once you do open up they either continue the deception and trick their way inside, or barge their way in through the open door.
Protect Against Home Invasion . . .
Good Door Locks.
Defending your home from invasion by force . . .
Defending your home from invasion by force requires the same home security measures as protecting your home against burglary. All external doors, and frames, should be of strong construction, be in top condition and fitted with deadbolt locks. Windows too should be in good condition, connected to your home alarm system, and fitted with locks.
Home invasion protection is in effect about establishing and maintaining good security habits that the whole family put into practice.
Do not open your door unless you are absolutely certain about the identity and intention of the caller. Do not even open your door just a crack, not even if it is on a door chain, door chains cannot withstand much brute force. Use your home security surveillance system, or a door viewer to establish who is calling.
The A-Z of Home Security.
How to Keep Your Home and Family Safe from Crime.
Defending your home from invasion by deception . . .
Defending your home from invasion by deception means your family keeping in mind that things are not always what they seem and people are not always who they claim to be.The guy at your door who says that his car has broken down and is requesting to use your phone to contact help seems like he is genuine enough, but why doesn't he use his cell phone? His answer is that the signal is weak. In that case offer to take the details and phone for help, but in no circumstances open your door.
There is a guy from the water supply company who says that he has to carry out some tests in your home. His manner is polite and respectful. He is wearing the water company's uniform and he sure does look the part. But uniforms can be stolen. Without opening your door, ask to see his ID.
Take a note of his his name and call the water company. Do not call any number he may give you, it could be the number of an accomplice, look up the number for yourself.
The excuses that home invaders give for calling at your door are innumerable and they can be very persuasive with their stories. Remember that the number one home invasion avoidance rule is do not open your door to anyone unless you are very sure of their identity and purpose.

- I had a mentally challenged person enter my unlocked house in the country while I was home back in January. By the time the police arrived, I had him at the kitchen table eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of milk. I figured that by offering him food, I could stay between him and the kitchen knives.

- My neighbour invaded my garden and stole vegies, tools and other things and trampled what she could not take. I was petrified she would burn the house down when I was out and had to take all types of precautions to ease my worries. Great lens here with relaly good tips.
