How exchanging home made Christmas gifts created our most memorable Christmas.

You can do this, once your family gets on board you'll have a year that they'll remember forever.

Last Christmas at the suggestion of one of my daughters we exchanged homemade Christmas gifts. At first the thought of making so many gifts was daunting and another daughter with a full time job and family was overwhelmed at the thought but we all did it and I have to admit it was one of the best gift exchanges I've ever been a part of. Instead of receiving "stuff" we received treasures. Some of the homemade gifts that we exchanged were knit hats, a cookbook of all grandma's recipes, beaded necklace and anklets, calendars with pix of the family events from the year before, "Mama Engquist's" home-made cinnamon rolls, as you can imagine it was wonderful. Not to mention we may have spent some time but we sure saved money!  It was a little difficult coming up with homemade Christmas gift ideas. Here are some helpful suggestions so you can make some great homemade Christmas gifts.

Better get busy!

Countdown to Christmas Day

Home Made Christmas Gifts, Jewelry

Who doesn't like Jewelry? This is a sure fire hit with all the females, young and old in your family. (Don't forget your girlfriends too.) These also make a great homemade Christmas gift for teens.

Wire Writing is a wonderful way to give a personalized gift the receiver will always enjoy. It's fairly simple and quick to do but the finished project can be dazzling. The overall principle is taking one continuous wire you bend and twist to make your creation. Add some "bling" along the way and you've got a great gift you'll be proud to give anyone. It's a little tricky to learn but once you get the hang of the bends and twists you'll be amazed at how quickly they'll come together.

Beading is an art as well as a craft. There are endless possibilities of things to create. You can get as intricate or simple as you want. Necklaces, bracelets and anklets are just the beginning. There are countless patterns for just about any thing you can think of.

Home Made Christmas Gifts, Knit Items

If you knit or crochet "hats" off to you, (no pun intended) I have tried many times to learn how to do it with needles and hooks but just can't get the knack of it. I absolute love the loom style of knitting. It's so easy even I can do it and the fast results of seeing you project come to life is great. It used to be that hats and socks were the only thing you could find patterns for, but with the internet all things have become possible. Doll clothes, doggie sweaters, slippers and of course those precious baby booties patterns are all available. You could just knit a pair of lined slippers for each person on your list. They're a homemade gift anyone would want.

Baking Home Made Christmas Gifts

Baked goods are always a welcome gift. (I think the jury's still out on fruitcake.) Cookies, pies, candies, cakes it's all good and since most people will indulge a little more at Christmas time, it will be an extra special treat for those of us who normally watch our calories.
My family has had a long standing tradition of having Mama Engquist's Cinnamon Rolls for breakfast on Christmas morning. There usually baked a head of time and frozen. So whether you make them for gifts or keep them for yourself you really should try them.
Another idea for a great homemade gift is a family cookbook. If you can dig out the old hand written recipe cards it makes it even more special. Seeing Mom's and Grandma's handwriting makes it so much more personal. Not to mention now all my children have the traditional family recipes.
