Can you generate your own home made solar energy?

Have you thought about your own home made solar energy? Is it possible to build your own solar electricity generator?

Yes, certainly you can build and generate your own electricity from the sun's energy. But in order to understand how you can do that, let's take a step back and take a look at what energy from the sun can do for you and how it works.

What can home made solar energy do for you?

Did you know that the earth receives more than enough energy from the sun in an hour to provide the world with its entire energy requirement for a full year? Regrettably, only a minuscule part of it is harnessed and the world still relies on power plants that burn fossil fuels and emit greenhouse-effect gasses into the atmosphere, contributing a large part to global warming.

By utilizing home made solar energy, you will get the following benefits:

  • Less greenhouse gasses are emitted by coal-driven power stations (if enough houses use solar electricity)

  • Your dependency upon the Power Company becomes less, i.e. you are not so
    much affected by power outages

  • Lower or even eliminate your monthly electricity bills

  • Add more value to your property

  • Get money from the Power Company for generating surplus electricity that
they can distribute, or get a rebate from the Power Company for installing a
solar power system (depending on where you live)

For too long, our country's version of an energy policy has consisted of Americans waking up every day and wondering how much it will cost to drive to work, how much it will cost to keep their business running, how much it will cost to heat or cool their homes. -- Bob Beauprez

How does home made solar energy work?

Solar panels are placed in your yard or on your rooftop where they can get the most amount of sun during daytime. The solar panels consist of a number of interconnected photovoltaic cells. These cells convert the energy from direct sunlight into electricity.

The electricity from the solar panels flow in the form of direct current (DC) at a low voltage, however household appliances require alternating current (AC) at a higher voltage. An inverter is then used to convert the DC (usually about 12 volts) to AC (110 volts or 220 volts, depending on where you live).

No electricity is generated when the sunlight is not available at night or on overcast days. Batteries are used to store surplus electricity during sunny days, and electric power is obtained from the batteries when the sun is not available.
