A Home Organizer ? What is it ?

Sometimes called a Homemaking Journal or a Household Notebook, a Control Journal or a Housekeeping Binder. Home Organizers are nothing new but have come full circle to help frazzled mothers and families keep on top of busy schedules and basic household chores.

An advanced version of a to-do list, a home organizer is one of the best ways to organize a busy family.

During the Victorian era how to books for the new wife on the basics of cooking, cleaning, handling servants, and child rearing were in excess. It wasn't a matter of finding a good resource it was a matter of choosing which one.

Many women kept notes of their daily to-do and hints and recipes their mother's passed on. Women in the American South wrote thick book of their specialized brand of southern hospitality homemaking.

The same can be said today. Nothing to sneeze at a Homemaking Journal can help immensly in organizing your family and home. If you've ever made a list from which to work from and noticed that you seemed to accomplish quite a bit when your tasks were laid out in front of you, you can only imagine how much a home organizer cn help you keep it togeterh. From cutting clutter, to meal planning, from children's schedules to your daily routine it's a must.

Where Can I Get A Home Organizer?

Putting together your Household Binder.

Well you can either purchase one pre made or you can put one together yourself. You can print a number of free forms online or your can purchase forms that come in binders already made up and ready for you to fill in.

The pluses to purchasing one pre made are you don't have to think about what kind of design to give it and what to name the sections, how many sections do you need or did you forget anything. But there is nothing to distinguish your Household Organizer from someone else's but then these usually stay at home so not a big deal.

The best pre-made Household Binders are a little flexible letting you add to them as needed. (our Planner Sheets on CD include a blank divider and calendar and cleaning list templates to fill in). you get your own binder ( I really like the Unikeep binders and am considering this for a home kept binder).

The pluses to making one yourself are it's a real extension of you and your family. If you're into scrapbooking or even not you can do some great things with the covers and dividers. The hard part is the internal sheets. Hand writing or even designing your own templates to fill in can take a bit of time and be discouraging. Many people tend to put down making their household organizers when they caught up in making the perfect templates.

So is there a happy medium?

I think so.

It seems that personalizing the exterior and not wasting time on the templates is the best way to go. Although if you're wanting to type on them as opposed to handwriting or even having to go through the tedious process of adding fields to templates you buy check out our Household Notes on CD. http://www.cafepress.com/vintagehome/2772621

So What Should Go Into Your Home Organizer ?

Some ideal sections for your home organizer.

Everyone has different ideas of what is needed in their family organizer.

A Home Organizing Journal is a central control notebook for all the
things related to you, your home, and your family. It carries within it
lists on maintaining your home, schedules for all members of your
immediate family, and reminders of things you need to do.

Here's a brief overview of some you may find are important to include
in a family organizing notebook in addition to your basic monthyl or
weekly calendar...

1. Daily Routine: These are the things that don't change from
day to day. Such as breakfast, morning devotions, exercise, thaw
dinner, take out garbage. It can be as basic or as detailed as you want
it.

2. Daily To Do List: This page is all of the things you have to
do for the current day that aren't a regular part of your daily
routine. Appointments for that day. Calls you need to make. Which area
of your home you are cleaning. Your menus for the day. This list will
change constantly so it's sometimes easier to have an erasable planner
page for this or a pack of tear off sheets.

3. Weekly Routine: This is a list of the things you do
differently from day to day but they don't change from week to week.
For example Wednesday may be the day you run your errands and Monday
the day you do laundry.

4. Detailed Home Cleaning Instructions: (check out put your home
on a schedule) This section of your planner will include the regular
routines for the upkeep of your home. It is finely detailed for each
room or area of your home. Such as; wipe walls, vacuum under bed, wash
curtains. It gets very detailed so don't hurry in making this list and
expect to add to it as time goes on.

5. Family Budget Worksheet: This planner page or area is a sheet
showing the regular bills and monetary responsibilities for each month.
You can check them off as they are paid through the month.

6. Important Numbers: These are numbers for people like your pediatrician, plumber, computer repair etc. Emergency type numbers also go here.

7. Weekly Menu Plan: If you are organizing your meals and/or meal planning this
would be the sheet showing your meals for the current week all on one
page.

Put Your Home On A Cleaning Schedule

How making a list of your regular cleaning chores can keep your home in tip top shape.

If you find yourself constantly missing areas of cleaning when trying to keep up your home consider making an appointment with each room in your house.

Make a housekeeping schedule to plan when you will do your cleaning and in what room.

Putting your cleaning on a calendar can help you because...

1. A housekeeping schedule keeps you from wasting valuable time trying to figure out what needs to be done and where.

2. A housekeeping schedule should be flexible enough to allow for such pleasant interruptions as your children, spouse, or company.

What gets done depends on your individual household but here is a basic list to tweak to meet your needs.

Daily:
Dishes
Wipe down often used bathrooms
Wipe kitchen counters and sweep floor
Make beds
Tidy - Bedrooms, Dining Room, Living / Family Room

Weekly:
Dust
Vacuum
Purge fridge of leftovers
Clean bathrooms

Monthly:
Vacuum under furniture
Clean oven
Clean fridge

Seasonally:
Have rugs / carpet professionally cleaned
dry clean seasonal clothing
Turn mattresses
Have furnace / air conditioner tuned

So now you have your list, how do you keep track of it? Well it's a good idea to have in writing when you will be cleaning. From daily to weekly to monthly jot in your planner, wall calendar, bulletin board what time is set aside for you to keep your home in order.

Think of how the professionals do it. Have you ever noticed the sheet on public restrooms that gets marked and dated when it has been cleaned? Of course you don't need to post your list for all to see but put it in a place where you can refer to it.

Cleaning your home will take time and effort. Organizing your cleaning efforts can help to to keep from becoming a slave to your home and from abandoning the schedule altogether and letting chaos reign.
