Home Remedies for Common Ailments

Ranked #12,352 in Healthy Living, #197,942 overall

Have you heard of these?

It's a fact: we want to feel good all of the time. Also a fact: we don't! It's a part of life - a vicious cycle that seems unending sometimes.

However, there are some things we can try ourselves; just as we don't always rely on people to do every little thing for us, we don't always need to rush to the doctor every time we experience an ache or pain.

Warning:

These home remedies are great to try to see if your symptoms improve. However, in no way are they meant to deter people from seeking appropriate medical attention.

As with anything, if symptoms persist, consult your physician or health professional in case there are underlying concerns.

Note: I am going to list my most recent remedies at the top so the lens will actually flow in descending order. It will save you - as a frequent visitor - valuable time.

#7. Coconut oil

A remedy of nature

Coconut oil has anti-aging properties if the oil is placed on the skin. It removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin, which gives skin a more radiant and youthful appearance. People also use it to remove make-up and as a prerequisite for shaving.

#6. The Headache Sock

Amazing, but true!

OK. I know you must be wondering about this one. After all, what is a headache sock?

It consists of 3 cups of rice placed inside a tube sock, which can be sewed at the outer edge or tied with a string, if preferred.

When completed, or when needed, place the tube sock inside the microwave. Heat it for 3 minutes.

Lie down and place the tube sock onto the aching part of your head.

#5. Dry skin...

Is it plaguing you?

Place 1/4 cup of baby oil into a deep water bath and feel the results almost instantly. You'll want to keep your hair out of the water, though, as to avoid it becoming greasy...unless your hair is drying out in which case, it doesn't hurt to immerse your hair into the oily water.

You can also rub a small amount onto your skin after towel-drying. Massage it into the skin deeply; it acts as a lubricant for your skin while providing relief to sore aching muscles.

Baby oil also aids in the healing of cuts and scrapes but, as with any oil, do not place it on burns - at least, not until the scarred tissue has largely healed.

Some baby oils come in the form of gels; these are also good and no one particular brand is better than another.

#4. Warts on your body?

Wash the surface of the wart and scrape off any seeds which you can comfortably remove. Depending on the size of the wart, place a 1 square inch piece of duct tape over the wart.

Remove daily, clean the area and place another square of duct tape over the wart.

Continue this for 3 weeks and you should witness phenomenal results.

#3. Coughing...

Is it out of control?

Massage Vicks VapoRub into your feet. Cover your feet with a pair of socks. Lie down for a while - or go to sleep for the night - and you should feel that your coughing has subsided, especially if your cough occurs as a result of a viral infection.

If Vicks VapoRub is not available, swallow a teaspoon of honey. It will slip and slide down your throat, coating the surface, thereby decreasing the level of agitation your throat experiences.

Vicks Vaporizer

Buying one of these was a great investment; it has proven useful numerous times. It recommends that you use cool water but I use hot water and, along with the Vicks VapoRub, it provides immense relief for coughs and colds. I've used mine during the day and through the night and I couldn't imagine not having one in my home.

When a cough and cold is getting the best of either member of my family, the Vicks Vaporizer helps each of us get proper rest, which is half the battle we face when not feeling well.

Usually ships in 1-2 business days

#2. Hair Drying Out?

Try using Miracle Whip as a conditioner. Shampoo and condition your hair as normal, massage 2 tablespoons of Miracle Whip into your hair and leave it on for 15 - 20 minutes before rinsing it. Allow your hair to dry on its own. Repeat this twice a week, as necessary.

#1. Ear troubles

Are they assailing you?

Place 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil into a medicine cup. Microwave it for 8 - 10 seconds, then stir. You can:

- drizzle the oil into your bad ear, place a cotton ball inside your ear, and lie down for 15 - 30 minutes with your good ear touching your pillow.

- dip a cotton swab (Q-Tip) into the olive oil and massage the inner part of your ear which you can comfortably reach without causing pain and discomfort. You can place a cotton ball in your ear but you don't have to, though it's still a good idea to lie down and get some rest.

Believe it or not, the Vicks Vaporub works...and Miracle Whip is a great moisturizer. As for the Olive Oil, it's saved me from having to take antibiotics on a few occasions.
