How to Feel Better When You Have a Cold or Flu

Eat Foods That Help to Fight Infections - When you eat right, you feel better and when you are suffering from a cold or flu, it is even more important to eat the right food and the right combinations of foods so that you heal better, faster.

Here is a list of some of the foods that help to fight infections and they will help you to get over your cold faster. Foods that help the common cold are listed below.

  • Bananas - Eating a banana will help with your upset stomach.

  • Brown Rice - If you are suffering from diarrhea, the brown rice will add some bulk to ease the symptoms.

How Can I Feel Better Now?

  • Use a Hot Or cold Compress Between Your Your Eyes- A bag of frozen peas or a warmed wash cloth will help to make your congested sinuses feel a lot better, fast.

  • Eat Some Garlic - Garlic and the Common Cold - In 2007, garlic also known as Allium sativum, may help to fight as well as prevent the common cold. This report, from BBC news, has plenty of evidence to back up this study. Garlic has been used for hoarseness, coughs, croup and as an expectorant - for generations.

  • Keep Your Head Elevated - When your head is elevated, you can breathe easier and you will feel less stuffed up.

More Things You Can Do to Feel Better - Faster

  • Drink Plenty of Hot and Hold Beverages - Drinking hot beverages will help to relieve you nasal congestion, hydrate your body and the now inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat will be soothed.

A great home remedy that goes back for several generations is a Hot Toddy. Every Grandmother and Great Grandmother used this to help ease the discomfort of a cold or flu.

  • Keep Your Nose Clean - Don't sniff. Blow. Blow often and blow correctly. Hold one finger over one nostril and blow glently, but thoroughly.

When you blow too hard, you take the chance of blowing phlegm into your eardrums. When you do this you are sniffing mucus back into your body. The phlegm carries germs that can give you a splitting earache.

To keep your nose from blistering and to open your breathing passages, keep a small amount of mentholated rub or olive oil all around it.

  • Keep Yourself Warm - Keeping yourself warm is a must - but not overly heated, this can cause discomfort. When you are chilled during a cold or flu, you are taking energy away from the healing process and it may take you longer to heal.

  • Get Enough Rest - Staying well rested is very important if you want to heal properly and if you want to heal in due time. Don't try to go back to work too soon and don't jump right into strenuous exercise. Relax.

  • Don't Let Your Throat Get Dry - Gargle Often - A nice warm gargle can keep your achy and irritated throat moistened and it can give you a load of relief - albeit, temporary relief. When you gargle, put a teaspoon of sea salt in the water.

A tea made from honey and lemon juice has worked for many generations, it is used to tighten membranes in your throat. If you are getting ready to sing, stay away from the lemon.

  • Stay Off Of Airplanes - Flying adds pressure to your upper respiratory system and your cold or flu has already taxed this area. Because of the problems that you are already experiencing, you may end up with damaged ear drums, to boot.
