Eczema - What is It & How is it Caused?

Eczema is the name for a group of similar skin conditions that are ugly, painful, and often very embarrassing for the person suffering from these problems. What it is has often been misrepresented due to misinformation and the fact that the medical community is a little divided on the issue.

Firstly though, there are a number of types of eczema such as:

Atopic Dermatitis - A common children's condition, but not exclusively found in children and can affects people of many ages. The symptoms include red, inflamed and thickened skin that can weep or bleed somewhat. This typically comes in flare ups but even when not inflamed the skin can feel scaly and thick.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis- This is a type of eczema that only occurs when in contact with a certain substance the person has an allergy to. This is commonly some types of metal, some fabrics, chemicals in cleaners and so forth, plants, and other things too.

Nummular Dermatitis - This is a eczema type that comes about as circular reddish sections of skin. This may burn and itch and even get infected. It is often found in older males 55-65 and in both women and men from 15-25. These are just the most common times this seems to occur.

Seborrheic Dermatitis - This is known as dandruff most of the time and primarily effects the scalp. This can go further than the scalp though effecting other parts of the body with the same symptoms which are dry and flaky skin

Eczema Pain Relief

Pain relief for eczema is something you might need to look into well before you try to tackle the underlying root causes of the condition. Being in pain is never a good way to live so make sure you soothe your eczema first and then you will feel much happier about implementing the changes you will need to, to get rid of eczema forever.

There are a few ways you can naturally reduce the pain caused by eczema - a few methods are:

  • Oatmeal Bath - Oatmeal is actually very good for your skin and can really help with eczema pain. Try running a lukewarm bath and then adding 2-3 cups of oatmeal in it. when you bath you will feel your pain ebbing away and it will hydrate and restore your skin as well.
  • Aloe Vera - This is becoming more widely used, you can buy it in many places to put on your skin - or you can grow your own and simply break off a leaf to use the sap inside to reduce pain.
  • Olive Leaf - This is a fantastic antiseptic. It may not reduce the pain you are experiencing now but it will stop your skin becoming infected which is where you can really start to develop some serious problems including pain and even blood poisoning. This is a fantastic herb to use to stave off these infections and stay healthy.

Dangers of Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are something you might have heard about when speaking to your doctor or researching this subject online. These are a type of steroid that has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties when applied to the skin where you have swelling from eczema or other causes. his is very effective and does reduce pain and swelling very quickly if administered properly. However there are a number of problems with using this drug that has some people keeping well away.

Tests have shown that corticosteroids can cause a range of quite bad side effects. Such problems as:

  • Cataracts - When applied near the eyes
  • Glaucoma - Can lead to permanent vision problems
  • Gastrointestinal effects - Indigestion and worse
  • Growth retardation - In children if used too much
  • Hypertension - High blood pressure
  • Osteoporosis - Especially in women, a loss of bone density
  • Weight gain - Increased appetite and water retention
  • And much more!

These side effects would not appear for a very short period of use but constant and persistent use of corticosteroids can lead to some of these problems in many eczema sufferers. As such many people opt for more natural and less dangerous solutions. It also happens that these natural solutions can bring more long term benefits as well making them a superior choice in all but emergency situations.
