Home Security Tips for Apartments, Condos, and Rental Homes

Don't think that homeowners are the only ones who experience break-ins and burglaries, too. Renters have their fair share of the scare, too. But while there are similarities between home security measures in your own home and home security measures in an apartment, condo, or rental home, there are also some differences that will be noted in this lens.

Affordable Home Security Devices

... affordable, easy to hadle, and so simple!

Some apartments do not permit the installation of home security systems. But, of course, this doesn't mean that you can't use other means to keep your place safe, of course.
  • The ever reliable LOCKS ands BOLTS are very effective. No questions asked.
  • The LAMP AND APPLIANCE TIMER can keep up the illusion that someone is in your apartment even when there's no one there at all! The lamp and apppliance timer is used to turn on lamps, stereos, and other applainces in a pre-set period of time and then turn them off afterwards.
  • The MOTION DETECTING LIGHT also helps in keeping up the pretense that someone is home. This device detects any movement in an area and automatically switches the light on and off (when all movement is gone). This is especially useful if you have a pet that'll help in turning the lights on and off.
  • DOOR ENTRY CHIMES have also proven their worth by signalling that a person has opened the door. Naturally, it'll scare the burglars a little and think that maybe someone's nearby and heard the chimes.

10 Renter's Security Tips!

  1. Once you've moved into your new apartment, either have the locks changed or change them yourself. Try asking if you can also use a DEADBOLT LOCK.
  2. PEEPHOLES are an advantage. Use it to know who's at the door. Don't just open it when someone knocks. Ask for identification, too, from deliverymen or other services.
  3. Keep your doors locked. Always. Even when you're at home.
  4. Check beforehand that the public areas around you hides no threat, like dark areas at the parking lot, or covered alleyways.
  5. It's always good to know your neighbors. This way, you'll know who's who, who are not from your apartment, and who to be suspicious of.
  6. You can always purchase PORTABLE DOOR/WINDOW ALARMS or get a WIRELESS HOME SECURITY SYSTEM. They're easy to install and uninstall, which makes them convenient for you when moving.
  7. After making sure your doors are locked, pay attention to your windows. Never leave them open and make sure their locks are secure.
  8. Use your last name (and your first initial if required) on your door or mailbox). This will leave strangers not knowing if you're a female or male, or how many people there are in your apartment.
  9. Invest in simple security devices that will give the illusion of a person staying at your apartment even if no one's really there. Examples are APPLIANCE AND LIGHT TIMERS and MOTION DETECTOR LIGHTS.
  10. Get a RENTER'S INSURANCE and protect your assets. You never know what can happen. Like we said, homeowners aren't the ones who experience break-ins and burglaries.

Hi, Sean. Thanks for this. You're right, it IS a bit different to set up a security system for a rented place, although the basic premise is the same.
