A friend of mine recently invited me to try out a surprising new device known as a soda maker machine. I imagined something like one of those soda machines that you see at fast food restaurants, or one of those soda dispensers attached to a hose at a bar. When I finally saw what my friend was talking about it was not what I anticipated at all.

It was a relatively small appliance, about the size of a food processor. It was made out of black plastic and seemed to be a docking station for a clear plastic soda bottle. There were no power cords visible. In fact, it was explained that the soda maker machine does not require any electricity. There are no power cords or batteries required.

So how do you make soda with this machine? It is actually quite simple. First, you have to fill up a soda bottle with water. You can use ordinary tap water or run it through a filter first. For the next step, you insert the bottle into the unit and twist it into place. To finish you push the big button on the top a couple of times in order to create the seltzer water.

At this point, my friend let me try a glass of the soda water. It tasted really good, comparable to any that you might buy at a store. With a couple ice cubes and a splash of lemon, this would make a very refreshing drink.

I am a fanatic of sparkling water and I prefer mine really fizzy. It can be hard to find brands that are bubbly enough for me. I was amazed to find out that you can dial in the level of fizziness with this seltzer water maker. Normally, three button presses is enough to carbonate the soda. But I found that 4-5 presses were more to my taste.

But what happens if you prefer a more traditional beverage? You'll be happy to know that all you have to do is drop in a cap full of any of the various concentrated soda flavors. There are many delicious flavors available in diet and regular forms. You can even create your own using recipes available on the internet.

I looked online and found several sites where you can order pre-made syrups. There are cola flavors, ginger ale, lemon lime, and various fruit flavors. Most had regular, diet, and caffeine-free variations. There was also an energy drink mix. I also liked that most of the flavors were not made from high-fructose corn syrup. There is just way too much of that in food as it is. I don't need it in my drinks.

Do you save any money with a soda and carbonated water maker like this? The estimates seem pretty persuading to me. According to reviews by other customers, it boils down to around 20 cents for a liter of carbonated water. If you add the soda mixes, the costs go up a small amount, but it is still dramatically cheaper than what you might be charged at a store. For the costs to work out, you need to drink a lot of soda, but that is already the norm for most households these days.

Having a soda maker machine is also extremely handy and practical. It allows you to create fresh, perfectly carbonated soda whenever you need it. You can determine for yourself or your family what ingredients go into your soda. No longer do you have to haul loads of heavy soda bottles home from the shopping center. Finally, with this home seltzer water maker, you can dramatically reduce your family's plastic bottle waste.

One of my concerns was what happens when the CO2 canisters are empty. According to my friend, this is really not an issue. For convenience sake, most customers keep 2 or 3 extras on hand. The manufacturer offers a fairly simple exchange program. You simply order the inexpensive refills online. Then you put the empty ones outside for a pickup. If you live outside one of these pickup areas, they will send you postage-paid shipping boxes.

In conclusion, I was really impressed by the soda maker machine. I have my own now and my family loves it. Whether you are looking for a flavored soda maker machine or a seltzer water maker, this is a very cool and practical little kitchen gadget.
