Wireless Internet? - Yes Please!

Internet without wires?

Yes, otherwise known as wireless.

No drilling through walls so you can watch TV whilst bidding on eBay.

No tripping over cables across the floor.

Watch out, though, as an unsecured wireless network is like leaving your front door open. Ensure you lock out potential dangers, hackers and general unwanted visitors.

Setting Up Your Wireless Network

Actually, setting up your home wireless network is not as difficult as it first appears. Here's a brief step-by-step guide to getting your wireless configured as quick as possible.

1. Get a wireless router

That's perhaps the most crucial bit! You can find wireless routers on Amazon, eBay or by searching round the internet in general. The best makes to look out for are NetGear (firm favourite), Dlink, LinkSys and Belkin.

Choose a wireless router that has firewall functions built-in.

2. Connect your wireless router to your PC / laptop

Your router should have DHCP functions built-in to the Ethernet sockets. This will configure your computer with a relative IP address that allows your computer to communicate with the router.

3. Configure your wireless router

Your wireless router will have a pre-defined IP address, which will be documented in your manual. Open your web browser and type in the IP address of your wireless router.

This will offer you various menus and wizards, which will walk you through setting up your broadband connection. (refer to router documentation for exact menu options)

That's it, you're done!

Wireless Recommendation #1

Change your router password

Most wireless routers are shipped with a standard username and password. Change this password as soon as you go online, if not before.

Hackers send out requests using these standard credentials, and if they gain access to your router, can change settings and take control of your broadband connection.
