2009 Interior design trends continue to overlap with fashion trends as lace or lace-like patterns return to decorating. This ancient motif has inspired numerous lines, and is showing up in some of the most unlikely of places.

The 2009 Furniture Trends include straighter - squared off arms, refined minimal legs on upholstery and tables. Straight, minimal designs on tables but playing up exotic wood grains. Simple lines in furnishings allow things like art or rugs to be played up.

One of the new interior design trends for spring 2009 is the resurgence of the serpentine shape. Considered one of the most eye pleasing and enduring lines of the 18th and 19th century, this winding pattern is enjoying a new life. Serpentine lines and shapes are popping up all over the place in lighting designs, furniture designs, and several elite fabric designs. Serpentine lines will be one of the biggest interior design trends for 2009 and I expect this trend to continue on into 2010.

Eco friendly flooring options are now offered from recycled materials of glass and metal or renewable sources such as bamboo. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are being made from processes that use significant percentages of pre- and post-consumer waste. The new tiles are just as durable and easy to care for. With the advantage of sustainability, there also come options for every budget.

Furniture profiles have started to become more tailored and compact instead of slouchy. Dressier finishes have prevailed, with more sheen and additions such as metallic accents. Shiny stone surfaces and glass tops are more popular than ever.

The textile and rug industry continue to invigorate interior decorating with large cage-like or lattice-influenced motifs. This style can date itself back to the heydays of Dorothy Draper's style influence of the '30's and 40's, in which she would use strong geometric pattern on ceilings, floors, and furnishings in a bold, brash style.

"For summer 2009, Pantone is forecasting a trend toward color palettes that reflect individuality and make people feel good about who they are," states Tod Shulman, vice president of fashion, home, and interiors division at Pantone.

Raspberry, Fuchsia, Petal, Mystique%u2026.call it what you want, but shades of pink are working their way back into interior decorating. Pink is a color of renewal and hope, and may be just the shot we need to enliven our spring outlook. Once looked at as a frilly, feminine outcast, pink is making a stronger name for itself.

Brown has become the popular neutral of choice, being able to carry its weight when paired with nearly any color. The new yellow-green tones liven up this palette, and are appealing to a broad range of styles.

Yellow is the color of the year! Bring in some sunshine and happiness with a collection of small vases, pillows, even a bowl of lemons will do.

Consider using a little Eastern influence or Indian Decor in your home decorating this spring. The ethnic patterns are used well in small doses in order to not look too trendy. Save the outlandish sequined patterns for fun pillows or accents.

At this past furniture market in High Point, NC, gray was featured as the "new neutral" in home interiors. Many of the major manufacturers showed gray in a fashion forward color scheme, combining it with shots of navy, yellow, lavender, apple green, or fushia. It was also shown with subtle shading of the same color for a sophisticated look. Gray has been on the rise in women's fashion again as a replacement for black as it softens the harsh edges - the same theory crosses over to home interior decorating.
