Home Remedy For Heartburn

Many things will cause heartburn and many who suffer from heartburn look for a home remedy for heartburn. Heartburn is basically acid reflux in which the acid in your stomach forces its way through your esophageal sphincter and hits the esophagus. This can be very uncomfortable and painful. Most stomach acids are highly corrosive, but your stomach is not bothered by this acid as it has a special lining but your esophagus is not so lucky.

Most individuals suffer from heartburn because of foods that they eat but some individuals with heartburn do not overindulge and do not know why they have heartburn. There are specific foods that trigger heartburn and even if you do not eat too much they can cause an episode of heartburn. Highly acidic, spicy, oily, and gas forming foods should be avoided. Monitoring your diet is one of the first suggested heartburn treatments recommended most by doctors.

Ginger root is a popular alternative remedy for heartburn as ginger can absorb acid in the stomach and also has a calming effect. There are capsule that can be taken after eating to settle your stomach and treat your heartburn. Bitter herbs such as goldenseal, wormwoods and gentian root are also very effective at treating heartburn and can be taken as liquid extracts or in gel caps before you eat.

Irish moss, slippery elm and plantain have also been helpful. Slippery elm is used in throat lozenges and actually contains a compound, mucilage, that coats your throat. This can help relief the discomfort in your esophagus due to heartburn.

One home remedy for heartburn that seems counterintuitive, yet is very effective, is to drink a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Simple stir up to 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of warm water and drink it slowly. It may burn slightly, but the relief should be nearly immediate for most people.

Fizzy drinks can cause the pressure in your stomach to increase which can cause acid to go to the esophagus so avoiding carbonated beverages can help stop heartburn. In addition, carbonated drinks such as colas can further erode the stomach lining and cause pain.

Heartburn can be caused by prescription drugs and other medications so you should check any medications you are taking to see if they are irritating your stomach. You also should not keep late meal times as the closer you eat to bed time the more problems you have during the night. Try not to eat 2 to 3 hours before bed and you may decrease your heartburn.
