Basic Spa Treatments You Can Do at Home

There are several spa treatments that you can do at home. If they are done before you get in your spa or tub, then the soothing water will ensure that aches and pains are taken care of and soothed away.

Our necks do a lot of hidden work, especially when we have to bend and lift heavy toddlers. To sooth your neck, roll up a bath towel and heat it in the microwave for 45 seconds. Spread it on the floor and lay on it, making sure there is a small roll under your neck. Place an eye pillow or fold a dark colored cloth over your eyes and relax for 10 minutes or until the warmth has dissipated.

A soothing massage will help ease those tired aches and pains from your body, but how can you get one for free unless you have a willing partner? Use an exercise mat or carpet, place several tennis or other small balls in various body positions such as under or between the shoulder blades, at the bra strap position, or above the pelvis. Lay on these balls and roll gently up and down and side-to-side to simulate massage. If the tennis balls are too hard, then use smaller, softer balls.

To help retain flexibility in your back, lie facedown on a firm surface like the carpet or the bed if you have a firm mattress. Lift your upper body up and prop yourself up with your elbows for five minutes. This increases shoulder strength too. If your arms and shoulders ache, lower yourself to a prone position for a few seconds.

For a foot massage, sit in a comfortable chair and place a tennis ball under each foot. Roll your feet around so that the balls touch every part of them. If you have trouble with the balls popping out from underfoot, wear socks. You don't have to wait for a home spa day for this one. It's easy to do each night while you are watching TV.

A facial can be easily done by filling a basin with hot water, then holding your face over the steam for ten minutes. Cover the head with a towel so no steam escapes. Chamomile tea added to the water will relax you and your facial muscles.

When you've finished with the facial, use the same water to soak your hands or feet. After the water cools, pat dry and gently rub in moisturizer suitable for your skin type.

How to Set Up Your Home Spa

You can experience a home day spa either indoor or outdoor

There are many different types of home spa set-ups and what you choose will depend on your space, your budget and whether you are renting or intending to move any time soon. It would be a shame to go to all the expense of setting up a home spa, only to move in a year or two and lose it.

To avoid this problem, consider getting a portable unit that you can take with you. A portable spa pool is the ultimate luxury and can be moved around the backyard, or taken with you when you leave. It is easier to set up because it is self-contained and you don't need to dig up anything for the plumbing.

You can simply set it on a foundation wherever it suits you, or you can create an outdoor room to house the spa. The room can be semi-portable; the addition of a deck on one or all sides, a sail over the top for shade and wall for privacy and windbreak will enhance your spa experience. Assorted shade-loving ferns and palms will certainly add a touch of exotic glamour.

Outdoor spas can be the swim spa pool with surf jets that allow you to swim 'on-the-spot' for amazing exercise, as well as hydrotherapy jets that are used in a more relaxing manner. They can be large, small or in between, portable (above ground) or in ground. These are most suitable for regions of temperate weather.

If you experience lots of cool or cold weather in your area an indoor spa would be more suitable. More use can be made of it indoors, since you are not dependent on the weather for use. Indoor spas can be different shapes and sixes, with round and oval being quite popular. You can choose what is called a chromatherapy spa that incorporates the use of colored LED lights to create moods of relaxation.

Another luxurious version is installed as a home entertainment system, with a pop-up TV screen set up at one end. The use of special equipment under the tub ensures that you feel the music vibrations as well as hear them.

A spa can also be installed as part of your normal bath, with added spinner jets to create that hydrotherapy feel. Effervescence - or bubbles - is used to stimulate and relax the various parts of the body. The bathroom can become a relaxation center instead of just a place have that hasty shower while the kids squabble on the floor beside you.

Do take time to look at this. Many of these treatments will make fabulous presents and I know that my wife will tell me off something awful for buying these things, but really be totally delighted.

She will also say; "How dare you suggest that I need these things!", as well I am sure - but that's all part of her (and my) enjoyment!
