And other ailments.

In order for us to understand what is going on with the air in our homes and workplace, we must first examine what is happening outside our enclosed environment. This is necessary because we cannot separate the two worlds. We're affected by both of them each and every day.

As you know, the outdoor air is continually being polluted with byproducts from automobiles, factories, oil refineries, power plants, chemical waste, forest fires, decomposition, and many other contributing man-made and natural pollutants.

Although sometimes she loses the battle, Mother Nature combats these pollutants naturally with rain, wind, lightning, ultraviolet sun rays and ozone.

These natural weather systems along with sunlight create ions, ultraviolet energy (UV) and ozone, which control the outdoor air pollution. So we don't bore you to death, we're not going to get into scientific explanations or a discussion of the physics and chemistry involved with how ions, UV and ozone actually clean up the air. Suffice it to say for purposes of this report that these elements will remove contaminants when introduced into polluted air.

So what's going on inside our homes?

Well, since the oil embargo in 1973 when gas and oil prices skyrocketed, a nationwide effort has been taking place to conserve energy and keep these costs down.

We've tightened up our building construction to keep the heating or cooling from escaping.

We've developed new technologies that have created better building insulation, thermal pane windows, insulated doors, building wrap and high efficiency heating and cooling systems. All of these energy saving devices contribute to this energy conservation effort. That's the good news.

Now for the bad news.

Tightening up homes also locks in the pollutants and contaminants, making the resulting sickness caused by the more polluted air a bigger problem than the energy crisis!

As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that the air in our homes and workplace is always 2 to 5 times...and sometimes 100 times more polluted than the worst outdoor air.

The indoor air is full of invisible contaminants, 98% of which are less than 1 micron (or 1/25,400th of an inch in size).

These contaminants include, but are not limited to:
1. Odors and fumes from paint, stains and varnish
2. Carpets
3. Dry cleaning
4. Animals and their feces
5. Fresh wood adhesives from building material and furniture
6. People
7. Perfumes
8. Cleaning chemicals
9. Deodorizers
10. Smoking
11. Candles
12. Pesticides
13. Mold and mildew
14. Furnaces and duct work
15. Dust mite feces
16. Gases like Radon
17. Contaminants from outdoors that get into the house, and so on!

We are living and breathing in a chemical soup that passes through the furnace filter and is distributed throughout the home by our furnace and duct work system!

If that's not bad enough, this next contaminant is really gross and disgusting. A major contributor to indoor air pollution is the notorious Dust Mite.

They are everywhere. In every house.

In your pillows. In your couches and chairs. In your carpets. In your bed. In your laundry room.
Dust mites exist in everyone's home and workplace no matter how clean it is.

See, there are 42,000 Dust Mites per ounce of dust, each excreting 20 fecal pellets per day. Think about this. How many ounces of dust do you think you have in your house?

Whatever number of ounces you guess, just multiply it by 42,000 Dust mites per ounce...and then multiply that by 20 fecal pellets per Dust Mite. It's a number that's so big it's staggering to think about.

But just because it's too hard to comprehend the amount of Dust Mite feces floating around your house doesn't mean you can ignore all the problems it causes.

As this excretion gets into the air, it can cause all kinds of allergic reactions when inhaled deep into your lungs.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that all these indoor air contaminants are the causes of asthmatic reactions and allergies, as well as numerous other chronic health problems.

The CDC also reports that there are three phases of contaminants in the air:

1) Particles
2) Gases
3) Germs

The CDC studies show that 35 percent of asthma and allergies are caused by the particles, 31% by gases, and 34% by germs.

All three phases of contamination must be dealt with in order to have the most positive affect on our health!

Let's end this by explaining something that may seem very obvious when I say it, but it must be talked about.

And that is the fact that your heating and air conditioning systems tied through your forced air system (furnace/compressor and blowers) efficiently spread this garbage throughout your house without discrimination!
