Indoor Air Quality on Wikipedia

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a term referring to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants.

IAQ can be affected by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), gases (including carbon monoxide, radon, volatile organic compounds), particulates, or any mass or energy stressor that can induce adverse health conditions. Indoor air is becoming an increasingly more concerning health hazard than outdoor air. Using ventilation to dilute contaminants, filtration, and source control are the primary methods for improving indoor air quality in most buildings.

Determination of IAQ involves the collection of air samples, monitoring human exposure to pollutants, collection of samples on building surfaces and computer modelling of air flow inside buildings.

Indoor Air Pollution - What Is It And Why Is It Making You And Your Family Sick?

How serious is this problem?

Well, the American Medical Association tells us that...

One-Third of the National Health Bill is from causes Directly attributable to Indoor Air Pollution!

This Includes:
Respiratory problems
Asthma
Allergies
Headaches
Fatigue
Sore throats
Eye irritations
Sinus problems
Dry skin
Colds
Flu

And other ailments.

In order for us to understand what is going on with the air in our homes and workplace, we must first examine what is happening outside our enclosed environment. This is necessary because we cannot separate the two worlds. We're affected by both of them each and every day.

As you know, the outdoor air is continually being polluted with byproducts from automobiles, factories, oil refineries, power plants, chemical waste, forest fires, decomposition, and many other contributing man-made and natural pollutants.

Although sometimes she loses the battle, Mother Nature combats these pollutants naturally with rain, wind, lightning, ultraviolet sun rays and ozone.

These natural weather systems along with sunlight create ions, ultraviolet energy (UV) and ozone, which control the outdoor air pollution. So we don't bore you to death, we're not going to get into scientific explanations or a discussion of the physics and chemistry involved with how ions, UV and ozone actually clean up the air. Suffice it to say for purposes of this report that these elements will remove contaminants when introduced into polluted air.

We'll talk about how and why you'll want to duplicate what Mother Nature does inside your home in a minute!

So what's going on inside our homes?

Well, since the oil embargo in 1973 when gas and oil prices skyrocketed, a nationwide effort has been taking place to conserve energy and keep these costs down.

We've tightened up our building construction to keep the heating or cooling from escaping.

We've developed new technologies that have created better building insulation, thermal pane windows, insulated doors, building wrap and high efficiency heating and cooling systems. All of these energy saving devices contribute to this energy conservation effort. That's the good news.

Now for the bad news.

Tightening up homes also locks in the pollutants and contaminants, making the resulting sickness caused by the more polluted air a bigger problem than the energy crisis!

As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that the air in our homes and workplace is always 2 to 5 times...and sometimes 100 times more polluted than the worst outdoor air.

The indoor air is full of invisible contaminants, 98% of which are less than 1 micron (or 1/25,400th of an inch in size).

These contaminants include, but are not limited to:
1. Odors and fumes from paint, stains and varnish
2. Carpets
3. Dry cleaning
4. Animals and their feces
5. Fresh wood adhesives from building material and furniture
6. People
7. Perfumes
8. Cleaning chemicals
9. Deodorizers
10. Smoking
11. Candles
12. Pesticides
13. Mold and mildew
14. Furnaces and duct work
15. Dust mite feces
16. Gases like Radon
17. Contaminants from outdoors that get into the house, and so on!

We are living and breathing in a chemical soup that passes through the furnace filter and is distributed throughout the home by our furnace and duct work system!

If that's not bad enough, this next contaminant is really gross and disgusting. A major contributor to indoor air pollution is the notorious Dust Mite.

They are everywhere. In every house.

In your pillows. In your couches and chairs. In your carpets. In your bed. In your laundry room.
Dust mites exist in everyone's home and workplace no matter how clean it is.

See, there are 42,000 Dust Mites per ounce of dust, each excreting 20 fecal pellets per day. Think about this. How many ounces of dust do you think you have in your house?

Whatever number of ounces you guess, just multiply it by 42,000 Dust mites per ounce...and then multiply that by 20 fecal pellets per Dust Mite. It's a number that's so big it's staggering to think about.

But just because it's too hard to comprehend the amount of Dust Mite feces floating around your house doesn't mean you can ignore all the problems it causes.

As this excretion gets into the air, it can cause all kinds of allergic reactions when inhaled deep into your lungs.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that all these indoor air contaminants are the causes of asthmatic reactions and allergies, as well as numerous other chronic health problems.

The CDC also reports that there are three phases of contaminants in the air:

1) Particles
2) Gases
3) Germs

The CDC studies show that 35 percent of asthma and allergies are caused by the particles, 31% by gases, and 34% by germs.

All three phases of contamination must be dealt with in order to have the most positive affect on our health!

Let's end this by explaining something that may seem very obvious when I say it, but it must be talked about.

And that is the fact that your heating and air conditioning systems tied through your forced air system (furnace/compressor and blowers) efficiently spread this garbage throughout your house without discrimination!

It sends the Dust mite feces and molds into your babies crib, your kids' rooms, your bedroom, the kitchen, basement, family room, dining room, den...where ever! Every day you breathe in over 15,000 quarts of air inside your house on average.

According to the American Medical Association and the government agencies like the previously mentioned CDC and EPA...all 15,000 quarts are contaminated, polluted, filthy air going into you lungs!!

If you think we're just trying to alarm you or are exaggerating the problem, and how it needlessly causes so many ailments you and your family suffer from as a result...just go do the homework yourself.

You'll find research by the AMA, CDC, EPA and so forth is public information...and tells us that indoor air pollution exists as a known cause of disease...and is getting worse!

As you'll hear in a minute, the time has finally come where the same technology that hospitals and clinics use to treat their air has been scaled down, and made incredibly inexpensive for you to be able to virtually purify the air in your house...immediately reducing or eliminating the chronic ailments you've suffered from for so long!

Now that I've explained this background of the problem, lets talk about the stunningly simple and affordable solutions to cleaning up the chemical soup you breathe in each day!

Indoor Air Purification: The state of the art technology to get rid of virtually ALL of the three invisible phases of cont

As discussed, Mother Nature controls the outdoor air pollution by using ions to collect particles, ultraviolet energy to kill germs, and ozone to control the odors and gases in the air.

It was also mentioned that your furnace is the main culprit in terms of evenly distributing the garbage around your house. But...with some simple modifications, we can turn this former bad piece of equipment into the hero!

You can instantly create the same effect on your polluted indoor air by using the furnace as your collection and treatment center for indoor air pollution (rather than the collection and distribution center of contamination!) and install a Healthy Home 3,000 System!

Let me explain.

The Healthy Home 3,000 System includes state-of-the-art technology, which has been used for many years in hospitals, medical facilities, and many other commercial and residential applications for the control of indoor air contaminants.

The Healthy Home 3,000 System includes the Dynamic Electronic Filter for the capture and destruction of the submicronic particles. The patented Dynamic Electronic Filter is registered as a health device, and has proven itself in ongoing use for many years in commercial, industrial and medical activities around the world.

It's also being introduced in thousands of residential applications throughout North America.

The Dynamic Electrostatic Polarization technology acts like a large magnet which attracts and holds submicronic allergens and contaminants as they move through the air ducts and into the treatment center of a furnace.

Excellent filtration is the first stage of air cleaning and probably the most important. But to have a complete air cleaning system, two more phases of contamination need to be controlled.

Keep in mind that one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is thinking that the cheapo filters you buy at the hardware store actually do any filtering of the harmful particles. Take a look at one of these filters and you'll see that you can see through the holes!

Remember that I told you that the average size of the particles that hurt you (like mold spores or Dust Mite fecal pellets are less than 1 micron (or 1/25,400th of an inch in size).

You CANNOT see anything that small, yet the holes in the filters you're using are big enough to see at least daylight (if not completely) through!

What do you think the odds are that this huge holes big enough to allow you to see through, are small enough to stop and capture the 98% of the stuff that's below 1 micron? (I'll give you a hint. NONE! Not a chance!)

This myth of thinking "a filter is a filter" has been around long enough. It's NOT TRUE! That's like saying all cars are made with equal quality or that a Rolex isn't made any better than a $10 watch. It's ridiculous to think that "they're all the same".

No paper filter can even remotely come close to stopping anything below 1 micron, which again, is the size range of 98% of the bad contaminants that are making you sick!

No, if you don't use the sophistication contained in a unit like the Dynamic Electronic Filter, you are simply wasting your time, and spending money on useless technology.

Next, let's talk about the Vital Air Ultraviolet Germicidal System.

It can also be installed to the air treatment center of a furnace to kill germs and control odors and other toxins. This system uses ultraviolet energy created by a germicidal lamp which acts like the sun's energy outdoors to control the spread of germs and other living allergens in the air.

Any germ that gets within 24 inches of this baby is quickly dispatched to germ heaven!

And by the specific and scientifically proper way these Healthy Home 3000 Systems are installed, almost any nasty living microorganism that gets into your house will eventually float his way down into the furnace and drift to its demise through the Healthy Home 3000 System!

Speaking of living things, remember our Dust Mite friends, all 42,000 of them per ounce of dust, each one excreting 20 fecal pellets per day? Well, it's not the Dust Mite itself that we're allergic to. It's his untidy habit of excreting his fecal matter regularly throughout the day, leaving it out there, floating in our air that we breathe. This gross mess is what causes the sickness and allergic reactions, which will be controlled with the proper installation of the Healthy Home 3,000 Systems!

OK.

On to the third phase of contamination in the indoor air are the gases, odors and other toxins which will be attacked and oxidized by controlled amounts of ozone created by the second, specially designed ultraviolet lamp in the Vital Air Ultraviolet System.

These three components of the Healthy Home 3000 System are more powerful and destructive to these phases of contamination than anything else you could install sort of the same type of commercial systems used in the hospitals and such. But, as they say...that's not all!

There are a tiny fraction of other toxins that still get through this lethal array of devices. (Lethal to the germs and toxins and particles. Not to you, your pets or kids. The Healthy Home 3000 System is completely safe, tested and approved by UL Laboratories, and if maintained by a trained and certified member of the Indoor Air Purification Institute are perfectly safe!)

Anyway, these obnoxious escapee toxins are locked and absorbed into the heavy duty carbon cell we add as the final nail in the contaminants coffin...which gives you the complete Healthy Home 3000 System...and as pure of air possible!

I can say for sure, that the percentage of pure, healthy clean air is well into the 90%+ range. In some cases, it gets as high as 99%, but I cannot make any assurances to you other than saying your air will be as pure as it can ever get... and be 5-100 times cleaner than it is now!

With the Healthy Home 3000 System, all three phases of indoor air contaminants are attacked by using technology that recreates Mother Nature's way of cleansing the air.

Most people who have installed a Healthy Home 3000 System report instant, immediate, measurable and noticeable improvements in the health of their family...with reductions or complete elimination of long term, chronic nagging and quality of life reducing illnesses and conditions.

Whatever you decide, we hope you understand that the answer to a brighter future with better quality of life, free from annoying and needless allergies and other ailments is right at your grasp.

All you have to do is reach out and grab it!

Thanks for your time and...breathe easy. Help is right around the corner!

To steer clear of common air quality problems inside the home, just follow these few tips:

Select HVI-Certified ventilation products to make sure airflow, sound and energy performance are met or surpassed.

Operate the bathroom exhaust fan when you take a bath or shower. This will reduce moisture buildup. Once you have finished your bath or shower you should let the fan run anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to remove any additional moisture in the room.

Turn on range hood fans when cooking

QuietFlex introduced an innovative flecible duct that can improve indoor air quality by radically reducing mold and bacteria, while eliminating formaldehyde out-gassing. The company states that the innoer core of the new AmgFlex Duct features an active, anti-microbial coating made of silver that interrupts the growth cycle of microscopic bugs that can plague traditional ductwork in warm, humid conditions.

Concerned About Swine Flu?

Are You Doing All You Can To Protect Your Family From The Swine Flu Pandemic?

It's only one strain of the flu virus. There are thousands of other strains and sooner or later one or more WILL find its way into your home.

If you think the danger from the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) is over, you might want to think again. It's getting worse and until a vaccine is developed, the only way to thwart infection is to avoid contact with the virus.

So far, the only advice coming from the medical community is to take standard precautions; cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and try to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. That's good advice, but it doesn't go far enough. That should be your last line of defense.

While these actions may help decrease the spread of the virus, they do nothing to get rid of it. A layered defense that utilizes state-of-the-art Indoor Air Quality technology might be your best bet.

Layer 1: Attack the Virus Before it Attacks You

There is nothing you can put in your home that is more efficient at killing viruses than a duct-mounted UV Air Purifier. This inconspicuous unit stays out of sight and out of mind while helping eliminate polluted air particles that could be making their way throughout your home. It works constantly to wipe out the bacteria and viruses that are cycling through your air conditioning or heating system, 100-150 times per 24 hour period.

This is the same technology that's been proven to decrease infections in operating rooms, and is commonly used in infectious disease clinics and laboratories. Using a UV Air Purifier, the H1N1 virus can be destroyed before it has a chance to infect you or your family. That's proactive protection that will help keep everyone in your home safe and healthy.

Layer 2: Build an Invisible Barrier Against Bacteria and Viruses

Your second layer of defense should be your air filter. Regular air filters do nothing to keep you healthy; they're designed to protect your equipment. An Electronic Air Cleaner is rather different. This specialized filtering system can prevent up to 98% of pollutants from circulating through your home, including mold spores.
Using an EAC in combination with a UV Air Purifier gives you superb protection from the damaging particles that make indoor air 5 times more polluted than outdoor air.

Layer 3: Prepare Yourself for the Fight

Finally, one of the most overlooked factors in the spread of viruses is humidity, or lack of it. Your heating system acts as a dehumidifier, and it works really well. In fact, it can lower your humidity to unsafe levels. Low humidity is said to be one of the main reasons the flu is more common in the winter.

The most favorable range for indoor humidity is between 40-50%. There's evidence to suggest that as your sinuses dry up due to low humidity levels, you become more vulnerable to infection.

Installing a Whole-House Humidifier will bring the humidity levels in your home back to normal. That means your family will be more resistant to any bacteria or viruses that may sneak past your filtering system, and you'll be less likely to pick up the virus during the course of your day-to-day activities outside your home.
