Altars For Prayer and Meditation .

Altars! Altars! Altars! Not just for Churches and Temples anymore. Oprah has one. Dolly Parton has several. Recently on her show, while Oprah was viewing Dolly Parton's mega tour bus, she saw Dolly's altar in her bedroom. Oprah said to Dolly that she too had an altar in her home for prayer and meditation. She said she has a special chair in front of an altar where she likes to start her day with a few moments of prayer and meditation. Can this be part of their success?

Creating an Altar!

An altar is more than a piece of furniture. It is usually a place for spiritual reflection and prayer. Home altars are often created to receive blessings.
Creating an altar is an enriching experience. Thought should be given to place, where you will feel a sense of spirituality. Finding the right place and the meaningful objects is primary to having your own, inspired, home sacred altar.

Objects are important

No matter where your spirituality may lie, your choice of objects for your altar will be a testimony to your beliefs.

Why Have an Altar?

>Do you want your altar to be a place of prayer and meditation?
>Perhaps just a quiet spot in your home for serenity?
>A place to display meaningful keepsakes?
>A memorial for loved ones who have passed on!
>Some people create an altar to petition healing?

Whatever your reason, careful thought and preparation should go into planning and creating your personal altar!

Altars can reflect religious affiliation and beliefs!

Creating Space

The art of creating sacred space . . .
The first complete book on altars and altar building. Altars Made Easy explores the creation of sacred-in the home, in the office, in the garden, even in temporary surroundings-as a powerful tool of transformation and spiritual development. What is sacred space? It is a place where, as Joseph Campbell put it, wonder can be revealed.

Do You Need Anything Special?

An altar can be an area on a coffee table, dresser, or night table. What gives it meaning and power is your intention in creating it and using it.

Do You Have a Home Altar?

This is a comment from my friend Dr. Bob Richmond:

I have trouble with applying the word "altar" - which historically implies a place of sacrifice - to a home tableful of dusty knicknacks. Another word is needed, and I don't know what it is.

Mexican brujas are seriously into this tradition.

My own idea for such a place is one I've only been successful with when I lived alone, for some reason. I borrowed the Japanese word "tokonoma" for it. The table remains, but every day you put something different on it - perhaps some flowers, perhaps the first object that comes to mind, perhaps a portrait commemorating a birth or death. The next day you replace whatever was there. You keep a diary of what you placed. Maybe now with digital photography a daily photograph.

I like the idea of an altar, but have not done one yet. :)
