Steps in Starting a Home Based Business
1. Assess your own skills and talents. You are born with some talents in you. If you do business using them you will meet with great success. You will make more money because the business based on your talents comes naturally to you. Also you have developed some skills from the school, by special training or by your association with other people. Such skills will be of great help in the business.
2. Identify your business. After assessing your skills and talents decide the business you can do based on them. It must be a business that will work. You must investigate whether clients will be available for the new business and whether it is profitable. The work must be suitable for doing from home. If you will have to go out you will lose other clients. The business should not take all your time. You will have others responsibilities like home chores to do. That is why you go for a home based business.
3. Space and time for the business. You must set apart a room or specific place solely for the conduct of the business. Do not mix your business documents with others at home. Find out how much time you can spend on it and set it apart exclusively for that. If the timing is the same every day it is easy for your clients to contact you.
4. Financial source. You have to assess the amount of money required to start the business. Then the next thing would be to determine from where it comes. Three sources are available generally. One is using your own money. The second is to obtain from investors and the third is to take out a loan. The best choice is to depend on your own savings. You can avoid the worry of repayment of the debt and payment of interest or share of profit.
5. Sales Tax Permit and Licenses. If your products or services are liable for payment of sales tax then it is absolutely necessary to obtain a Sales Tax Permit. All necessary licenses should be taken. The requirements of licenses differ from state to state. Almost all states require license for dealing in food articles.
6. Checking account and record keeping. Open a checking account especially for the business. Do not mix it with your personal bank account. Find out the bank which offers the best services for the least fees. Compare them with the services offered by the bank where you have your personal account. If the terms are favorable it is better to select your bank because they know you better. Have a good record keeping system. It gives not only an idea about the financial health of your business but also complies with requirements of the tax authorities.
The seventh step is by far the easiest and still the hardest for most people to do. Overcoming their fears (fear leads to procrastination). Fear, FEAR, fear just seeing the word spelling the word and writing the word can produce a negative feeling. So many people dream of starting their own business and never do because of fear. I don't know one thing about starting a business and it cost too much money (FEAR). How am I going to maintain a business in these hard times (FEAR). Fear isn't something we are born with it something we pick up in life along the way. I have been thinking about starting my own business for years and fear was the main thing that was keeping me from trying.

Start a Business With Little or No Money
The only sure way to never be fired or laid off is to be boss. The only way to be the boss is to start your own business. "But I do not have very much money, if any at all." you say. Well in today's culture there are quite a few businesses that can be started for little or no money at all. This is not a get rich quick scheme, I am not saying that you will be making five grand a month from the very beginning, but I am telling you, that no matter the amount of money that you have, you should still be able to start a business without much fuss.
So what is the catch? Well the only thing that I would even consider a "catch" would be the fact that you will need the skills necessary to complete whatever task is asked of you during business. This basically means do not start up a dog grooming business if you do not know how to groom dogs. The key is finding something that you were interested in previously to starting the business.
What businesses can be started with little or no money? Here are a few examples:
House and Office Cleaning Business
This business requires little or no money to start, the only thing you will need is the skills to clean (which everyone should have), and the cleaning supplies to do it with. The first job that you have you can use the cleaning supplies that you already have, and then buy more with the money you receive when finishing. In the event that you do not have the cleaning supplies on hand, then you should not have to spend more then about 20 dollars.
Once you have the supplies necessary, advertising a cleaning business is a simple. The majority of house and office cleaners simply place an ad in the local paper detailing the area in which they would like to work, and the majority offer free bids. Potential clients will call, and you will take a trip to their house. You will analyze it and give them a bid.
Laundry Business
This one is great because you can take a skill that you should already have, and then put it to good use to the people that do not have the skill, time, or the energy to do it. Offering a pick up and delivery laundry service just means that you pick one someone's clothes, wash and dry them, fold them, and then return the clothes to their house. The only thing you will need is the soap to wash the clothes in (and some laundry companies even make the client provide their own laundry detergent due to allergies and personal preferences).
This business especially tailors to bachelor men, so you will want to advertise in places that would attract this type of person attention.
Alteration Service
If you have basic sewing skills, then you may want to consider starting an alteration service. Alteration could mean hemming pants, changing seams, or dying clothes.
The only you may need out of pocket is to buy various colors of thread, needles, and possibly a sewing machine if you are planning on taking on larger jobs.
Since you main focus will be clothing, you will want to advertise at local clothing shops or department stores. You may also want to consider talking with businesses that supply uniforms to employees. The business can then recommend that the employee to you if an alteration in their uniform is needed.
