Home Beer Brewing

Brewing beer at home is not rocket science, or some secret art only known to a few select people. It's easy! It's not hard to get started, saves you a LOT of money and done correctly(this is important) tastes great!

Where to Start?

To get started making beer you don't need much at all. I would suggest you start with a kit which can be bought from your LHBS(Local Home Brew Shop) or many other retail outlets. These should include all the tools you need to get started.

Follow the instructions to make your first batch. I only advise you to follow the instructions for simplicity's sake, just to get you started. Making a kit up according to the instructions will make beer that is 'drinkable' but not great by any means. This will allow you to focus on cleaning and sanitization , which is extremely important. Don't let this scare you though it's actually quite easy.

Common Mistakes

Sanitization

This is THE most important thing when it comes to home beer brewing. You must sanitize everything that comes into contact with the wort(unfermented beer). This kills any 'wild yeast' that may be living on any of your equipment. Wild yeast is any yeast apart from the stuff used in your brew. If it gets into the wort it means it will most likely get 'infected'. If it becomes infected you have to tip it all out and start again, i.e. not good.

Brewing Temperature

Almost all of the beer kits you buy will give you the incorrect brewing temperature. Wrong or large temperature fluctuations can cause off flavors in your beer. Different types of yeast have different temperature ranges.

Sugars

I can't go into too much detail here about sugar. What I will say is don't use all sugar and nothing else. Experiment with differing amounts of malt extract. If you use all sugar you will end up with watery beer that has a cidery taste.

Shortcut to Delicious Home Brew

I recommend this to all my friends as it is such a great guide to brewing. It helped immensely and is cheaper than any brewing book in a shop. This also has another major advantage over books, it's a video course. No reading boring books here.

The reason why I love this is because most brewing books are overly complex, filled with jargon and just downright complex. Not everyone has days on end to spend brewing. This super easy course puts everything in easy, simple steps that will have you brewing delicious beer in no time. I wouldn't be without it!
